05.01.2022 Young Witness NEWS RELEASE (for publication 25/6/2021). Red Backs continued their unbeaten start to the South West Slopes Credit Union hockey competition with a 3-1 win over Vikings in last Saturday’s match. In the second game Penguins were able to record their first win of the season holding out for a 4-2 win over DTS. Vikings held Red Backs out until well into the second quarter when Geoff Palmer was able to squeeze the ball past the defence after a number of saves had be...en made but they had failed to clear the ball. Red Backs had their second on the board early in the third quarter with Palmer again scoring after dispossessing a defender and beating the remaining defenders with a well placed shot into the corner of the goal. Another goal to Mark Brooker gave Red Backs a 3-0 advantage midway through the third quarter. It was not all one way traffic with Vikings making numerous raids with Brendan Sheppard and Declan Laybutt particularly prominent, however, Red Backs defence led by Luke Cosgrove and Sarah Osborne held strong until Vikings managed to convert a penalty corner when a well worked play saw Brendan Sheppard on the post slip the ball past the remaining defence. Penguins‘ first win of the season came off the back of a good short passing game employed by their young players. Tahlia Gruber opened the scoring after 8 minutes scrambling a bouncing ball past the DTS defence. Mark Birks put Penguins up 2-0 two minutes into the second quarter after an interchange of passes saw him score from an angled shot. A goal to James Cronin nine minutes into the third quarter saw DTS back in game but Tahlia Gruber restored Penguins two goal advantage three minutes into the last quarter when she made a long run into the circle to score. Chloe Gruber added another goal to Penguins tally after a quick pass from Janice Dunk found her in space to the right of the goal. DTS were rewarded with a second goal two minutes from time with an attack down the left found Michelle Cronin unmarked on the post. David Wark played strongly in defence for DTS to be their best while James Payne impressed along with Tahlia Gruber for Penguins. Hockey will take an extended three week break for the school holidays and will resume on 17 July.
