25.01.2022 Re-Emerging With Polarized Lenses With all the challenges facing our industry, eyewear dispensers may be tempted to forego important conversations with patient...s about polarized lenses. After all, if its harder now to sell a primary pair, talking about a second pair may seem just too difficult! But remember, workers and students are emerging from isolation and starting to take part in more outdoor activities. Patients will want to be well-equipped to experience the outdoors with comfortable, unsquinting eyes. What better way to emerge from being confined mostly indoors, by seeing the world in the best possible light? Its summer here in the Northern Hemisphere, and polarized lenses make the outdoor world crisper, clearer, more vibrant and more alive! (Not to mention safer behind the wheel.) So always remember to demonstrate the power of polarized lenses to your eye care patients. And when ordering from the lab, please remember to Specify NuPolar! Thanks, everyone! Dave
25.01.2022 When people are asked, What is your most precious, most important SENSE, they nearly always say sense of sight. Yet, looking at U.S. sales, you see they are ...spending their dollars as if they answered sense of feet! The athletic shoe business in the U.S. is $17.5 Billion, while the entire U.S. sunglass business is only $5.6 Billion! This means that the athletic footwear business is over 3 TIMES LARGER. In addition, the athletic shoe market is growing at nearly double digits, while the sunwear business is just about flat. Our industry needs to learn how to sell sunwear and communicate its benefits to our patients. While a typical closet will have MANY pairs of shoes, it is a rare consumer that has multiple pairs of glasses. We need to remember, all our patients need sunwear for good outdoor vision. Your patients will thank you!

21.01.2022 Throwback Thursday: The Seamless Lathe Well, it looks like an antique now, but in the 1960s the Seamless lathe was a new and innovative way to make the tooling... for the Younger Seamless Bifocal, Younger Optics first flagship product. The cutting tool was guided by a cam curved to the correct base curve, typically 2, 4, 6 or 8 Base. The invisible bifocal segment was cut into the block by using an insert like the one shown here. Different inserts could be used to adjust the additions, sizes, and positions. After the block was cut, we would make a glass test lens, read it, and check its add. The whole setup was very finicky and parts could get out of alignment. The little steel cylinder which followed the cam was particularly vulnerable to uneven wear, since it was used on every cam. These days, everything is guided by computer-controlled machines, but in those days a lensmaker really had to learn to have a feel for the machine. #OpticalIndustry #OpticalHistory

21.01.2022 Ingredients for a Successful Progressive Rx There may be some debate in our industry about which factors are the most critical in successfully dispensing progre...ssive lenses. Is it the design? base curve? material index? In my view, its perfectly clear: The factors directly controlled by the ECP are still the most important! Hierarchy of importance: Most critical: Proper refraction, fitting height & PD measurement Second most important: Base curve selection, progressive design, corridor length, material index Nice to have (icing on the cake): Customization, individual wearer parameters Lens designs have improved far beyond what I ever imagined in the early 1970s, but one thing hasnt changed: the ECP is still the most important ingredient in the mix. Technology can never replace a competent and well-informed eyecare professional.
20.01.2022 The cost of eyewear gets a bad rap in the press. During my 60 years in this industry, I have seen countless news articles and industry experts either understa...ting the manufacturing cost of eyewear or bashing the value of brands, leading to the common misperception that the cost of eyewear is too high. The fact is, eyewear is unique in that its a both a medical and fashion product, has a broad spectrum of options, is personally dispensed by a trained individual, within a short distance from most people, and at every price point. Consumers can shop from high-end boutiques, mass merchandisers, eyewear chains, doctors office, and even online to find the price point and service level desired. Can you think of another product where SO many choices are available? The eyewear industry offers market competition at its best, not its worst!

16.01.2022 "Hi there, Im Dave Rips, owner of Younger Optics in Torrance, California. Well, Im in isolation, like a lot of other people, since Im supposedly in a high-ri...sk group, being over 60, and I had heart surgery twice in my life, so that puts me into high-risk, so Im clearly in isolation. Anyway, I want to use this time to talk to you a little bit about whats going on at Younger. Many of Youngers production facilities around the world continue to operate. Younger is the worlds largest independently owned lens company, and it has facilities in Prague that service Europe. It has facilities in Brazil, for Brazil, and thats in Sao Paolo. It has facilities in Adelaide, Australia for Asia and the Australian market. Its main production facilities are in Torrance and also in Guaymas, Mexico. And R&D and a lot of other administrative duties are also in Torrance, CA. Were continuing to ship from most locations maybe on a reduced schedule but as much as we can. I want to talk to you a second about the future of the optical industry. Everybody always says Oh no, this is going to be the end of the optical industry. I mean, contact lenses were going to be the end of the optical industry LASIK surgery was going to be the end of the optical industry and you know, if a meteor was going to hit the earth, everybody would say, Oh no! This is going to be the end of the optical industry! Well, I dont believe it for a second! I believe the optical industry will survive this and become stronger. To me, the people showing up at work are the everyday heroes right now. The people who are dispensing glasses for people that need them in all aspects of our industry. Well, well get through this together. Like I said, thank you to everyday heroes in our industry and, once again, Im very proud of our industry and it is a vital industry! Its something everybody needs, its a vital medical device and well come back from this stronger than ever! So thank you for your loyalty to Younger Optics through this time. We go into it strong, and well come out of it strong! Thank you."

15.01.2022 You may have heard that Camber Lens Technology is amazingly adaptable to the visual needs of almost every presbyope. But did you know Camber is not a static d...esign, but rather the application of a powerful idea, rooted in proven optical science. Whats the big idea? If you are interested in the technical reasons why Camber works so beautifully for presbyopes, I encourage you to visit the CamberLens website (linked in the comments below), which is available to read in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. By the way, one of Younger Optics loyal lab customers in the UK recently decided to market their Camber-based lenses with the brand name The Rips Progressive. I think my late father, Irving Rips, who invented the first seamless bifocal lens in the 1950s, would be extremely proud! #ophthalmiclenses #opticalindustry #visioncare

11.01.2022 Wow! The launch of Transitions Signature Gen 8 lenses began in Latin America this week. I still remember vividly the first time Rick Elias from Transitions Opt...ical visited my company, Younger Optics, to discuss the first launch of Transitions lenses, almost 30 years ago! Since that time, the photochromic technology has gotten better and better, and Gen 8 products offer the best performance that Transitions has ever achieved. Younger Optics is proud to partner with Transitions Optical to offer the latest development in this Golden Age of Photochromics.

09.01.2022 As we enter our third week in isolation here in Los Angeles, Ive had to face a very important lesson: Without the ECPs the doctors giving eye exams, the disp...ensers fitting and dispensing eyewear, the people working in the optical shops theres literally no optical industry! All the normal business things we worry about efficiencies, lowering costs, developing new products, improving our manufacturing facilities, brands, designs dont matter at the moment because lenses and eyewear and frames are not currently being dispensed. Most manufacturers and labs have lost 70% to 90% of their total volume since this virus began. All of us in manufacturing have had to face the truth that the real leaders of the industry are YOU, the ECPs, and that were there solely to serve you, and your efforts to serve the public with quality eye care. All of us at Younger Optics are looking forward to the day when our industry MVPs can return to work so we can serve you! Until then Stay safe out there and take care! See more

02.01.2022 Recommending polarized Rx sunglasses can feel difficult after already making a potentially expensive first pair sale. The second pair needs to do something real...ly special for the wearer that the first pair cant accomplish. This is where Transitions Drivewear sunwear fits in. The number of drivers is now over 230 million in the U.S. and over 1 billion worldwide. Even if a majority of your patients dont fish, do water sports, run triathlons, or engage in extreme sports, most of them probably do drive a vehicle. Drivewear lenses were built to maximize the driving experience and improve vision wherever your driving trip takes you.
