17.01.2022 Caitlin Ahmad and Alexandra Hughes students from St Hilda’s Anglican School For Girls in WA created a project called the Sun Tracking Solar Panel. The project utilises sensors to orientate a solar panel to follow the sun’s path in the sky. Their project incorporated two LDR sensors that, with a code, calculate the tilt required to optimise the efficiency of the solar panel. The solar panel is self-powered and designed to maximise the efficiency and energy input of the solar panel. SAP 4 Good, Digital Careers Australia, The Smith Family. SAP Australia

15.01.2022 YICTE Virtual Senior Award Ceremony 2020

14.01.2022 Aquaponics is the way of the future, both for mass farming and for individuals at home, as shown by our South Australia Roadshow entrant, Michael Zhang from East Marden Primary School. He created the Wi-Fi Fish Feeder, a test model fish feeder useful in aquaponics. Using Wi-Fi, you can control the plant light and thermometer so that you can feed your fish, control the lighting for the plants and view the thermometer to watch the temperature of your tank when you’re on the go.... It is Michael's belief that more people will become interested in growing their own fish and vegetables if aquaponics was simple to do. With this system, you could feed your fish and grow your vegetables anytime, anywhere, whilst doing anything. Not only is this an impressive entry to our Young ICT Explorers competition, but it 's also an environmentally conscious one.

14.01.2022 This article by Solar Power World details how Edisun Microgrids, a solar technology company, has spent the last few years creating a rooftop solar tracker that can sit on flat rooftops, making a carousel system that was simplified and lightweight from the heavier, less wind-tolerate designs they used to use. Having a tracking panel boosted the power input by 30% when compared to regular solar panels. As an important source of renewable energy, it is exciting that Western Australia’s First Place winners for the Year 9 and 10 YICTE category last year created a similar solar panel tracking system, which you can learn more about next week. https://www.solarpowerworldonline.com//solar-trackers-fin/

13.01.2022 Here is an interesting article explaining the process and production of biogas, a combustible gas mixture that is produced by the decomposition of organic matter, which can then either be used directly for gas cooking or lighting, or alternatively it can be compressed, like natural gas, to be used for motor vehicles, and finally, as two of our Young ICT Explorers showed, transformed into electricity. Read more about their invention next week! https://www.abc.net.au//how-you-can-turn-your-food/9324434

11.01.2022 Virtual YICTE gives schools and teams choice on how they present their ideas this year, we will be reviewing teams work via video conferencing technology, and allowing teams the option to submit video entries. Video entry isn’t new for us, our National Finals competition has seen many entries competing in this format, and last year our Year 11-12 National Champion, Joshua Beaman from Centenary State High School in Brisbane, entered this wonderfully concise video entry, along ...with documentation and pictures to support his truly special creation. Josh’s project is a software-controlled pneumatic robot but not just any robot, he built an animatronic entertainer, fitted with modern show control technology, this life-sized guitar player mimics the movements of a real guitar player, programmed to an audio track. Josh aimed to create and control a humanoid structure that would be controlled as effectively as possible with relatively in-expensive materials and techniques. It’s safe to say he smashed that goal, if you want a unique, social distance friendly entertainer to play at any upcoming events, Josh and his robot are sure to turn heads. :) See more

08.01.2022 Biogas is a renewable, green source of energy and its uses are incredibly diverse as seen in last week’s shared article. A team of two, Clare Goben and Lexie Fenner from Ravenswood School for Girls, thought of an ingenious way to introduce biogas in a compact way to your home through their invention, the Renergy Bin. The Renergy Bin uses the methane gas produced from garbage to create electricity, that can then be used to power a variety of items, or sold to electricity companies, which has been observed on dairy farms. Miss Goben and Miss Fenner received a Merit Award for their innovation and environmentally conscious invention.

04.01.2022 One of our favorite YICTE creations from last year, a project called Real-Time Learning, from Kempsey Adventist School in NSW, who came 2nd overall at the National Finals in the Year 7-8 category. Real-time Learning is a project aimed at improving classroom learning outcomes by considering the wellbeing of students. Unfortunately, Kempsey has one of the highest suicide rates in Australia, and poor student wellbeing is an on-going challenge as it impacts learning. The team developed an iOS app that simply and quickly captures a student’s readiness to learn and provides this data to the teacher in real-time, enabling the teacher to modify the teaching approach to fit. The app also captures the effectiveness of the lesson at the end and provides this feedback to the teacher.
