25.01.2022 Why you should seek alternative interventions if the school your child goes to doesn't teach explicitly, systematically and sequentially in phonics and your child isn't learning to read easily. There are structured literacy approaches out there that can be accessed and if your school isn't offering one it is likely to be the difference that makes the difference.
25.01.2022 Why learn to read sound by sound not word by word....
25.01.2022 If you are just getting used to wearing the twin hats of teacher and parent here are some tips that may help: Have a particular space and a time set that you are supporting your child to do their academic work and let that be it. Planning a schedule and having a set place to work allows the structure that we all thrive on when creating habits around things we do. We dont want to be wondering all day when we will get to that math sheet. You will get a lot less pushback from c...Continue reading

22.01.2022 https://www.youtube.com/user/WonderGroveKids A kids' introduction to metacognition. Thinking about our thinking is how we can make all sorts of changes to our experience. When we think about whether we have understood something when we read (as is outlined in this episode) we have the choice to ask a question or find out the meaning of a word. Later we can wonder if our thinking is helpful or not. "I am noticing that I am guessing when I read, and it's actually taking longer than if I sound out the word right to the end because I understand what I'm reading the first time." Metacognition is a super skill for life and crosses over to areas like perspective-taking and influencing your own mood through paying attention to what you say to yourself.
21.01.2022 MRI's for 3 months olds predict challenges with reading 5 yrs down the track. Wouldn't it be great to take a preventative rather than responsive approach to those who process words differently? If you've ever had someone tell you your child wouldn't have Dyslexia if you'd read to them or that it's a result of your socio-economic status, arm yourself with research such as this.... https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_re/2020-05/cns-fst050120.php

21.01.2022 Why doing a little bit every day of something you want to master, is way more important and valuable than doing it all in one go. You can spend less time and get better results by spreading out the practice and making it an active and engaged process. http://pdf.retrievalpractice.org/SpacingGuide.pdf

20.01.2022 Watching storyline online is different than watching television in one very important way - vocabulary. The Vocabulary of a written text is is much richer than the oral language typical of what is experienced on a television show. For instance In Clark the Shark "In all the wide blue ocean" and "A shadow fell across the playground" Click on "show more" under the you tube clip to see parent learning activities that take the book to the next level. Research on the "value of rich read aloud experiences for vocabulary development" and later reading comprehension can be found here: https://journals.sagepub.com/d/pdf/10.1177/1086296X15627528

It is vitally important that schools and teachers are provided with the support, training and resources they nee...d to ensure that all students learn to read. Add your name to the list of people who support an evidence-based action plan to get all children reading by the end of primary school. 17.01.2022 The level of funding being received for your child depends on the level of adjustments being made to accommodate their learning that are reported to government. Ask to see your childs Oneschool to see if they have acknowledged that any adjustments are needed and what they are.

15.01.2022 Dont let those moments of comparing where you are to other people define you. They are moments of great courage that will develop strength in you and see you valued for the other things you bring to the table, as a result.

08.01.2022 https://apps.apple.com/us/app/manipulatives/id1275632407 When kids are finding it difficult to understand a concept the ideal way to help them understand is to use concrete materials. In the absence of having something to actually hold and touch these are a useful representation.

07.01.2022 https://www.readinga-z.com/books/decodable-books/ We love decodable readers because they dont rely on cues from pictures or context to read them. The kids can literally sound out the words from their growing bank of sounds they recognise in order to read them.
