05.01.2022 AMSA Careers Week speaker release: Dr Dan Wilson is a Rural Generalist Trainee and GP Obstetrics Registrar training in the Grampians region in Victoria. He was Victoria’s 2019 Junior Doctor of the Year, and Finalist for Australia and New Zealand’s 2019 Junior Doctor of the Year. He is deeply passionate about improving the delivery of healthcare for rural Australians and is currently working at the Ararat Hospital in Victoria, where he became the first and only full time docto...r in January 2019. Dan's clinical interests include Women's Health & Obstetrics, LGBTIQ+ & Sexual Health, Medical Education, Medical Management & Leadership, Rural Health. Dan is a Board member of the Rural Doctor’s Association of Victoria (RDAV), Chair of AMA Victoria GP Registrar Subdivision, and Non-Executive Director of Future Connect. Dan is passionate about providing access to healthcare for rural Australians and the Queer community. In the LGBTQIA+ community, those individuals are more likely to experience ill health in terms of their mental wellbeing and increased risk of suicide due to a lack of access. For myself, as a gay man, it’s really difficult to come forward when you’re experiencing a health condition and bring with you a baggage of wondering if you are going to be judged for the way I live my life or the way that I am and it can be really hard to find a close connection with a practitioner that you feel safe with. We are beyond thrilled to welcome Dr Dan Wilson as one of our AMSA Careers Week speakers.

In her spare time, she writes fantastic and moving articles capturing the intricacies of humanity, and tells stories from the frontlines of Médecins Sans Frontières. 02.01.2022 You might have seen that the government announced a $50.3 million investment to expand the Rural Health Multidisciplinary Training (RHMT) Program but what does this mean for medical students? What is the RHMT? The Rural Health Multidisciplinary Training Program aims to improve the recruitment and retention of the rural health workforce through rural training opportunities. It funds rural clinical schools (RCSs) and the allied-health counterparts (UDRHs), along with 26 Region...al Training Hubs (RTHs). Why is the RHMT important to medical students and training? In 2018, approximately 2,500 graduating students had completed a placement at an RCS. RHMT funding covers many facets of the rural student experience, including education, community engagement, research, financial support and rural selection (to name a few!). The approach and use of RHMT funding currently varies between universities, with some RCSs providing accommodation for students, some RTHs providing career mentoring and advocating for more specialty training, and others involved in supporting junior doctors. What does the Budget say about RHMT funding? This week the government announced a $50.3 million investment to expand the Rural Health Multidisciplinary Training (RHMT) Program, which supports medical and allied health students to undertake rural training. This funding also supports the 26 Regional Training Hubs tasked with building specialty training pathways rurally, and supporting students and trainees to pursue these. Where to from here? AMSA recently provided feedback following the RHMT evaluation and will continue to be involved in the stakeholder consultation process. Our key priorities are ensuring that this exciting investment will allow greater availability and clarity around rural training programs through Regional Training Hubs, support international students to complete rural placements, and ensure that students aren’t just placed rurally, but are supported throughout their experience. The RHMT evaluation provides a great summary of the program and where it’s strengths and weaknesses lie at this stage https://www1.health.gov.au//C/rural-health-rhmt-evaluation
