25.01.2022 It is a systematic failure. A failure that is simply a news story or a statistic to many. However, when it is your family, it matters to you. Maternity departments are a vital community service to rural towns and no statistic can describe this as well as the people who are bearing the brunt of this reality. AMSA Rural Health wishes this wasnt as pressing today as it was when written by one of our 2019 members Illie Hewitt and yet our newsfeeds are showing more and more ru...ral hospitals losing the maternity services they rely on. The closure of birthing facilities has significant impacts emotionally and financially, not to mention physically on the lives of mother, child, family and community. Women are asked to relocate in advance or travel for appointments and delivery, with stories such as Jasmin Jones, of giving birth on the side of a highway in the middle of the night, reaching our headlines recently. You often cant plan for when a baby will arrive, but we call for the government to plan for their safe delivery and strengthen our rural health services. 25.01.2022 AMSA Rural Health is excited to see the extension of the Rural Health Commissioner Role that was announced earlier this week by Minister Coulton. Previously we called for strengthening of the Stronger Rural Health Strategy (https://www.amsa.org.au//amsa-calls-stronger-rural-health-) and we are hopeful that the increased breadth and support of the role will allow for the oversight of even more than the development of the Rural Generalist Program. The pathway to rural practice isnt limited to medical school placement, or intern year, or vocational training - its an integrated journey and we need a strong advocate to ensure the puzzle pieces fit together,

25.01.2022 Tonight in collaboration with AMSA Indigenous, we will be sitting down to discuss the importance of First Nations-led education, and the institutions that continue to fail Aboriginal children. Our panellists include Hayley McQuire, a proud Darumbal and South Sea Islander woman and a passionate advocate for Indigenous social justice. Hayley is the National Coordinator and Co-Founder of the National Indigenous Youth Education Coalition, which is focused on asserting Indigenous ...rights to education. Maya Newell is an Australian Producer and Director known for In My Blood It Runs (2019) and Gayby Baby (2015). In Australia, Gayby Baby famously caused a national stir when it was banned by the Australian State Government from being shown in NSW schools. It triggered a national conversation about LGBTQIA+ families and significant in the fight for Marriage and Adoption Equality in Australia. Maya has spent time in Arrernte country making educational films for Indigenous communities. It was here that she began creating In My Blood It Runs as a look into the Royal Commission into the Detention and Protection of Children in the Northern Territory. Dr Jocelyn Jones is a Nyoongar woman and an Aboriginal epidemiologist with extensive experience in qualitative and data linkage methods. Her areas of expertise are juvenile justice, women in prison and child protection. Finally Bradley Goff is a Biripi man, a current medical student at Monash and the AMSA Indigenous Policy Officer. Alongside his medical degree, he is studying a Masters in Bioethics, with a thesis focusing on how assumptions of invalidity of non-dominant knowledge systems give rise to prima facie rejection of moral arguments grounded in non-dominant knowledge systems. Make sure to tune in at 8pm AEST / 7.30pm ACST / 6pm AWST! There's still time to watch the film for free on iview if you havent already! https://iview.abc.net.au/show/in-my-blood-it-runs Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/287403089143107/ More information about the film may be found here: https://inmyblooditruns.com/
23.01.2022 Welcome back to the Rural Student Spotlight! This week we spoke to Tasfeen, a 4th year Curtin student. "My passion is in public health. In medicine, we often make a distinction between symptomatic treatment and treating the underlying pathology. To extend this distinction, it seems to me that clinical medicine itself is symptomatic treatment. In a very real sense, we're already too late by the time a cocktail of antihypertensives and oral antihyperglycaemics becomes necessary.... We often talk about a biopsychosocial model of health, and the influence of social circumstance on a person's health. I think it's important to take this idea to its logical conclusion and think about the social changes that we can make to support our patients' health. Naturally the discussion now includes liveable wages, good infrastructure, affordable healthy choices and taxes on unhealthy ones, to support the lifestyle changes that we piously counsel our patients to adhere to. To me, rural health is naturally a part of public health. I'm currently in Kalgoorlie, in rural Western Australia. Here, public health challenges are compounded by the tyranny of distance, and the maldistribution of resources from well-meaning but perhaps misguided metropolitan decision-makers. Local Aboriginal communities must also contend with a painful history and an inequitable present. As health professionals, we're uniquely placed in an intersection of health, economics, and politics. We enjoy a high level of trust from society. I think there is a greater awareness nowadays among medical students of our responsibilities to the wider community. I hope that medical students and doctors will help make positive changes, perhaps in a wider setting than we are traditionally used to." 19.01.2022 For this week's Rural Student Spotlight, we spoke to Rachel, a third year student studying at Monash! I grew up in the Northern Territory having lived in Darwin for about 13 years. I spent most of my weekends in my childhood frolicking about in the various bushlands of the Top End (basically anywhere more north than a town called Katherine). I obviously attended school like any other normal child but on the weekends, we would pack up the car and go as far as we could manage. ...Most of the time we went to a national park called Kakadu, if you ever want a reason to move north, look it up! We would go out to camping spots and fish, have campfires, general hiking and exploring our own backyard. Theres a saying in Darwin if you want anything done, it would be done on NT time. Where NT could mean Next Tuesday, Next Truck, Next Train etc. Realistically, it was an excuse not to get things done as a pace faster than a leisurely stroll through the park. Because of this culture, it is an incredibly relaxed placed where everybody knows everybody and the currency for mates rates, is a carton of beer. Fast forward to 2015, I was 17 years old and I made the trek down to Melbourne, to start my Biomedicine degree at Monash. Who wouldve thought you can have a culture shock in your own country? I sure did. I was starting off in this big city, with barely a bushland in site (I have since learned there are many places to go to explore so thats good!). I started off at a university where I hardly recognised the people around me. It didnt take long however for some of these Melbourne-ites to take me under their wing and since then I have finished Biomed with an incredible pack of friends who I couldnt have survived this relative concrete jungle without. These amazing people I have brought with me into another whole new world of medicine and all sorts of postgraduate/occupational adventures! #ruralstudentspotlight #gorural #ruralmedicine #medicine #AMSA

14.01.2022 Regional and remote Australians experience mental health issues at higher rates than their metropolitan family and friends. Unfortunately, they also experience a lack of access to care. We need systematic change across regional Australia to ensure that everyone has access to timely and affordable mental health care. 2020 has been hard. So we ask, RUOK? How are you coping on your regional placement? Do you need support? Remember to look out for each other, ask the question if you notice any changes, and reach out if you are concerned. Check in regularly. Be kind. Remember you are never alone. Lifeline is available 24/7 at 13 11 14.

13.01.2022 Introducing our new series, RURAL STUDENT SPOTLIGHT! This week we spoke to Claire, a 3rd year student at the University of Melbourne: Best rural memory? That is tough! Every day in a rural setting is totally different. But ultimately it is the relationships you form with patients which have the biggest impact on me, and which I have experienced more in rural areas. People are so open and welcoming, and truly want you to learn from their experiences. Being on a rural placemen...t this year, I have visited patients homes, then seen them in the clinic, and understand their life from a very holistic perspective. This holistic care is why I started medicine, and how I want to practice in the future. Do you know a rural student who's got an interesting story to tell? Send us a DM or email at [email protected] ! #ruralstudentspotlight #gorural #ruralmedicine #medicine #AMSA
