24.01.2022 Here are the main differences between the Tasmanian Voluntary Assisted Dying bill compared to the Victorian model. There are some proposed amendments to have some of these sections removed. We believe that it is paramount to utilise and improve on the known issues of the Victorian VAD legislation to have the best legislation possible. C’mon Tassie.... we’ve got to get this right! ...Continue reading

24.01.2022 Thank you Roger Jaensch for your compassionate second reading speech in support of VAD I have arrived at the position that the only way to accommodate this diversity of deeply personal views in law is to give everybody the greatest possible chance to exercise their own choice, not to make it for them. That is why I am voting in support of this bill today. For those who are dying, and for whom surgery and medicine cannot help, who are close to death and who do not have t...he strength to rage anymore, who are afraid, and who have lived well and struggled and prevailed but no longer have control over their own one life, surely it is time for all our clever science and law-making and humanity to give them a way to go gentle too. #voluntaryassisteddying #yourchoicetas #doingitfordisey #yourlife #yourright #yourchoice #parliament #tasmania #vad #GoGentle #peacefuldeath #compassion #mumspromise

24.01.2022 One of the most significant values our Mum instilled in us was the importance of expressing gratitude and spreading love. Our Legislative Council fairly represented their electorates with in excess of 30 hours debating the bill to ensure it can be the best possible legislation for our little island home. Each one of our Upper House members voted to pass this bill to enable a more compassionate choice for Tasmanians in their final days.... We asked you to contact your local MP to offer your support for VAD. We now ask you to recognise the input and dedication the Legislative Council have given Tasmania. Let’s show our gratitude and contact your local MP to thank them for their commitment #voluntaryassisteddying #vad #doingitfordisey #yourchoicetas #parliament #tasmania #compassion #gratitude #legislation

If you have been unable to erect your sign or your circumstances have changed, naturally we understand. 17.01.2022 Would this proposed amendment strengthen the bill? OR create additional restrictions for our terminally ill? This amendment proposes to restrict access to VAD to people who are expected to die within 6 months, or 12 months for neuro degenerative illnesses. Have YOUR SAY through a letter to the editor here https://www.examiner.com.au/co/send-a-letter-to-the-editor/... As the time draws near the VAD debate, there have been a few MP’s who have put forward amendments to consider. One of these proposed amendments by Murchison Independent MLC Ruth Forrest, is for there to be a prognostic timeframe for a person with a terminal illness to be expected to die within a 6 month period, or 12 months for neuro degenerative diseases. Our concern is whether doctors and specialists would actually be willing to guarantee such precise timeframes to our terminally ill. Mum never received a prognosis of less than 6 months and she suffered terribly for months, and no doubt many of you have experienced this too. Would all doctors be able to provide this information with absolute certainty? What does this actually achieve for the patient? Would it encourage patients to refuse treatment in order to qualify the timeframe criteria to access VAD? Is this assuming extreme suffering occurs only in the last 6 months of a terminal illness? Or do you think this amendment would in fact strengthen the bill? Tasmania can learn from the experience with the VAD legislation in Victoria. In Victoria, the need to provide a prognostic timeline has proven to be a significant stumbling block. In reality, almost no doctor can say how long a patient who is terminal has left to live. The requirement to provide a prognosis has paradoxically made some doctors hesitate, so that patients only become eligible for VAD care when it is in fact too late. The removal of this barrier would be likely to enable patients to begin the process at a more appropriate time Dr Nick Carr, who works in Victoria and is actively involved with VAD, believes this amendment would be a limitation to our bill. He says you have the opportunity in Tasmania to vote for a law that not just takes the best of what we have in Victoria, but improves upon it. I would urge you to have the courage to keep these improvements as part of the bill, and show the rest of Australia that Tasmania has understood the experience in Victoria, and has the wisdom and maturity to craft an improved version. 16.01.2022 Our little Tassie has a big heart... On Tuesday 10 November VOLUNTARY ASSISTED DYING legislation passed the Tasmanian Legislative Council unopposed - a world first! This amazing result is a testament to the work so many people have done to support the campaign to make voluntary assisted dying legal. We have really appreciated everything people have done to help us so far!... Of course we would never have made it this far without Mike Gaffney MLC and his team. The work they have done to create and improve this Bill, to consult with the community, and to advocate for this reform in Parliament has been incredible. Finally, while we should all celebrate this milestone outcome, we can’t relax quite yet. The Bill is still to come before the House of Assembly, where we expect the vote to be much closer. The result in the Legislative Council is a demonstration of just how much of a difference people power can make. Let’s now turn our attention together to the House of Assembly, and make sure this Bill finally becomes law. Now that the Bill has passed the Legislative Council, the next steps are as follows: 3 December Stage one of debate on the Bill will commence in the House of Assembly 4 December Debate will continue until stage two is concluded Feb/March 2021 Stage 3 of debate (clause by clause examination) and final vote. While some people will be understandably frustrated that the final vote on the Bill won’t occur until early next year, it is important to note this delay will not impact the implementation of the Bill. This is because the implementation timeframe of 18 months set out in the Bill will be modified to commence from December. In other words, if the Bill does pass, no person wanting to access VAD care will have to wait any longer due to the vote being delayed to next year. Stay turned for the next stage of our campaign. We can’t wait to share it all with you #voluntaryassisteddying #yourchoicetas #doingitfordisey #yourlife #yourright #yourchoice #gogentle #hurdle #compassion #lowerhouse #compassion #parliament #powerofpeople

05.01.2022 Thank you for your compassion and support Ella Haddad MP Some excerpts from her second reading speech last month. It is my fundamental personal belief that people should be able to make their own decisions about what happens to their bodies. It is my belief that people should be able to make their own decisions about the health care they receive during their lives and when they are facing illness. I support people's rights to make these decisions in a safe way, support...ed by medical professionals, families and loved ones. I also believe this decision-making autonomy should extend to the treatment options we choose when it comes to our end-of-life care. Legislating for safe, careful VAD would give people a choice and give dignity to those who have lost it. It would give people comfort to know that there is a choice. Many who would have that choice would not take it up, as we have seen elsewhere, but it is about providing that relief and comfort to people knowing that they have a choice if they are facing such an intolerable death. I believe when it comes to VAD we must recognise that people who would access this regime are already dying. They are already suffering terminally and their loved ones are suffering too. We owe it to these people to pass this legislation. People who are suffering unnecessarily and who could easily be any one of us or our families or loved ones. I want to live in a compassionate state. A place where we care for one another and lift each other up when we need it. I believe Tasmanians are compassionate people who want to see this compassionate change which is why I support the legislative changes proposed in this bill and commend it to the House. #voluntaryassisteddying #yourchoicetas #doingitfordisey #yourlife #yourright #yourchoice #parliament #tasmania #vad #GoGentle #peacefuldeath #compassion #mumspromise

01.01.2022 Some excerpts from MP Guy Barnett’s second reading speeches on voluntary assisted dying... However, the End-of-Life Choices (Voluntary Assisted Dying) Bill is ill-conceived and sadly, in my view, has a perverse effect, delivering a less caring, less compassionate and less loving society. The bill attempts to establish a legislative and administrative framework for Tasmanians to commit suicide with the assistance from the medical profession. It is complex and ambiguous, an...d it is flawed in many respects. The bill's safeguards our inadequate and will not eliminate the risk of abuse. The bill places at risk, vulnerable Tasmanians, the elderly, the sick, people with disabilities, people with depression and Tasmanians of that ilk. This bill undermines the dignity that should be ascribed to each and every person. The bill also undermines all the good efforts in recent years to combat youth suicide and suicide more generally, especially in rural Tasmania. It is my view that the bill is ill-conceived, is ambiguous and is fatally flawed. It has a perverse effect of delivering a less caring, a less compassionate and a less loving society.
