25.01.2022 The message here is definitely a truth for me.
25.01.2022 For those of you who like to be at the forefront of nutrition - perhaps you'd like some protein-rich cricket powder sprinkled on your breakfast? I've not yet done the research into their touted "superfood" status but I was interested to read about the appearance of crickets in our diet in the form of 'cricket powder' (what a clever way to sneak it in - a bit like adding cauliflower to the mashed potato). The company below is located in Byron Bay (where else?) and source cric...ket powder from a Canadian cricket farm where crickets live blissfully in a "cricket condo" feasting on their favourite non-GMO organic (naturally) cricket smorgasboard for the short, but sweet 6 weeks of their cricket lives. Apparently when the males start chirping it's time to watch the sunset one last time before being harvested as "humanely as possible". Then it's into the grinder and on a flight to Australia - amazing! Definitely food for the future!
25.01.2022 Great work by Dietitian Connection to help people understand a dietitian's expertise.
24.01.2022 ......now a registered NDIS provider.....great home visit today with someone in need of some straightforward, evidence-based guidance
23.01.2022 You are probably aware that insulin can't be taken orally because it would be destroyed by the acid in our stomach, but researchers are now a step closer to an alternative to injecting insulin through skin. Researchers at MIT have developed a tiny little injector inside a capsule (about the size of a blueberry) that once swallowed, auto-injects insulin into the stomach wall. Experiments suggest it is as effective as regular injections. Work is ongoing to develop the technology for use in patients. The video explains the fascinating science behind it.
22.01.2022 How to peel fruit the right way. goo.gl/r8wORO
20.01.2022 VegEze - a new free app from the CSIRO that sets you the challenge to eat 3 veggies at dinner for 21 days. Sounds easy right? Anything to help us eat more vegetables is worthwhile I say.
18.01.2022 I was interested to read about antibiotic-free chicken now being sold at Coles and wondered: Are we being exposed to antibiotic residues in regular chicken meat? My finding was, maybe, but the chance seems small. Their are regulations regarding safe with-holding periods after giving antibiotics to ensure the meat is free of any residues. But if this doesn't sound convincing to you, what I also learned was that free-range and organic chickens cannot be given antibiotics, so will also be antibiotic-free.
17.01.2022 Eggs are a superfood to me - nutrient rich and convenient and my happy little chickens that so generously provide them (sometimes) are a delight to behold. (They are super cute Silkies, the teddy bears of the chicken world.) Anyway, this new study (albeit funded by the Australian Egg Corporation, but conducted by a reputable bunch of researchers at Sydney Uni) has shown that a high egg diet (12 or more per week) compared to a low egg diet (2 or less per week) had no adverse consequences for cardiovascular risk factors in people with Type 2 diabetes. That's right - lots of eggs within a healthy diet and no increase in blood cholesterol. Lovely! I'm happy to keep recommending eggs.
17.01.2022 I believe the GI was behind much of the popularity of sweet potato. Never intended to promote sweet potato chips (Red Rock Deli - product of the year) which have sold $14 million dollars worth since launched!
16.01.2022 Neat study conducted in South Australia throwing cold water on the benefit of taking fish oil supplements in pregnancy.
15.01.2022 Some interesting research from Gary Frost .....early days but could be a breakthrough for nutrition research
14.01.2022 Fascinating stuff if you look at the video, but obviously a long, long way to go.
14.01.2022 Hopefully increasing awareness of the most commonly wasted foods will help us waste less.
12.01.2022 Promising results from a huge trial that has shown that the weight loss drug, Lorcaserin reduces the incidence of diabetes and lowers blood glucose levels in those with diabetes. Currently only available in the US, one of the ways Lorcaserin works is through suppression of appetite, resulting in weight loss.
11.01.2022 This isn't a comparison of carbs versus no carbs but illustrates benefits of wholegrains on metabolic rate (speeding it up) and gut function (eliminating more waste) and consequent weight loss. It's even more significant given that commercially the term whole grain includes products made from processed whole grains like like wholemeal flour and wheat flakes. I predict the benefits would be even greater with true whole grains with a low GI like quinoa, cracked wheat, whole oats and grainy bread.
11.01.2022 I think this is fascinating stuff (not that this article relates directly to Diabetes). Love the bit that says only 43% of the cells in our body are human! The rest are bugs (our microbiome).
11.01.2022 'While no single food can supply all the essential life-sustaining nutrients, xxx comes as close as any other in the plant or animal kingdom.' ........and which food would that be? Quinoa... Yep, love it or hate it, we're likely to see more of it in years ahead. Mind you it's taken a long time getting here - the quote above is taken from a research paper published in 1955! And yes, NASA have looked into it and it is eaten by astronauts! How could you not include it in your diet?! It does provide all the essential amino acids, is a good source of essential fatty acids and it's low GI. Carb content: 30 g per 1/4 cup (45g) raw quinoa which will equate to 1/2 cup cooked. The recipe below includes a very easy, tasty twist to what is otherwise a fairly bland grain alternative. https://cafedelites.com/balsamic-chicken-salad-lemon-quinoa/
11.01.2022 Looking forward to taking a closer look at the fluctuations in blood glucose from different foods with wider use of CGMS
10.01.2022 A fantastic start-up company designed to combat food waste. Through the website you can type in your postcode and find fresh food near you. You can also list food if you've grown an excess in your own garden. First look this morning showed me a range of free fresh food available at Blaxland.
10.01.2022 Thanks for the praise David
10.01.2022 Fascinating collection of photos showing the foods eaten by a kid in 1 week in different parts of the world.
09.01.2022 Just one of the things that keeps me healthy!
08.01.2022 You can eat eggs, you can drink coffee and you don't necessarily need gluten free (unless you have coeliac disease)
07.01.2022 I’m just returning from an obesity management workshop at the University of Sydney and I’m wondering how my role as a Dietitian will change in the future. Bariatric surgery is now the recommended endpoint for all my patients with a BMI above 35 with central adiposity - that’s a lot of people and is going to cost a lot of money. I’m struggling to come to terms with it to be honest. In the meantime very low calorie, meal replacement diets and pharmacotherapy are recommended . It seems that good nutrition and regular exercise just won’t cut it when it gets to this stage. I guess my message is: Don’t leave it too late to do something about that waist measurement above 80cm. It’s likely to get bigger and the longer it’s ignored the harder it becomes to shift. If you need some advice, talk to a Dietitian .
06.01.2022 A new app to help people manage type 2 diabetes, taking one step at a time.
05.01.2022 A link to dental health and diabeteshttps://www.dhsv.org.au/dental-advice/general-dental-advice/people-with-diabetes. General advice for dental health is to eat a piece of cheese after eating sugary or acidic foods as dairy products assist in reversing the decay process. Cheese lovers eat your heart out..........hmmm
04.01.2022 Apparently aerating sugar particles makes them dissolve faster on the tongue to create more sweetness with less sugar. Amazing! This process has enabled Nestle to create a chocolate bar with 30% less sugar and no artificial sweeteners. Given that milk chocolate is at least 50% sugar by weight, this has to be worthwhile for chocoholics. I look forward to trying it, but as yet it is only available in the UK.
03.01.2022 Stats that leave me
