19.01.2022 FACT: Clothing is cheaper now than it has ever been in all of human history. It is hard for us, as modern day people, to fully comprehend just how expensive clo...thing used to be. We're not talking about a few hundred dollars, but rather the equivalent of a full year's salary. Automation and machinery changed a lot of that (sewing machines, lace making machines, fabric weaving machines, etc.), but so did a shift to assembly line based sewing, where, instead of one person or a few people making a garment from start-to-finish, every person focuses on just one area (such as buttons or zippers or necklines) before passing the garment on to the next person. In addition, we've outsourced most of our clothing production and manufacturing to places where the cost of labor is cheap. However, an unfortunate side effect of that is people think *all* clothes are supposed to be cheap. An indie designer sewing on their own or with a small factory, is NEVER going to match the prices you find at a Target or a Wal-Mart or even a Victoria's Secret. And that's okay. We shouldn't expect them to. Ethically-made clothing - clothing where everyone involved is paid a fair and livable wage - is ALWAYS going to cost more. And it should.
