22.01.2022 - ’ ! ? HIIT stands for ‘high intensity interval training' and is any kind of physical exercise where you push yourself for sharp bursts of vigorous activity, spaced out by periods of rest or lower intensities.... HIIT training tends to be of shorter duration and less frequent than endurance training as this type of exercise is generally harder to perform and sustain. For example, if you were to perform HIIT training on an exercise bike, treadmill, or rower, you might push yourself as hard as you can for 20 seconds, and then rest or continue at a much lower intensity for 40 seconds, repeating this process 10 times for a total of 10 minutes. Other common examples of HIIT training include circuit training programs, boxing, aerobics and some sports. Compared to endurance training, HIIT is far more time efficient. For people with busy lives, HIIT may be the best way to get some great results! To sustain a healthy active lifestyle, based on the national recommendations performing 20 minutes of HIIT 3 days a week is just as good as performing 30 minutes 5 days a week of moderate intensity endurance exercise! - Many studies have found that HIIT was just as effective if not more effective than endurance training at reducing cholesterol, resting systolic blood pressure, and blood glucose. - Many studies have also found HIIT to elicit larger improvements in VO2max when compared to endurance training. This means that HIIT is potentially more beneficial at improving fitness! This may be an effective way of making sure you can run around for longer on the soccer and footy field. - HIIT has also been shown to be more effective than endurance training at reducing abdominal fat and waist circumference. While both were just as effective at weight control, HIIT seems to have better overall outcomes when it comes to body composition. If you’re keen to learn more about HIIT training or have an individualised HIIT program made up just for you, make a booking with our Accredited Exercise Physiologist Jennifer Bennett who consults at Your Health Sport and Spine in Dural on Tuesdays. Call us on 02 9651 1395 or make a booking online at: www.yhss.com.au

16.01.2022 A lot of you are worried about the Covid-19 Pandemic which is facing us all. To be perfectly honest it concerns us a little too. There are plenty of things including social distancing, minimising contact, regularly washing hands etc we can all be doing. As frontline health professionals we are certainly doing this all as well. Currently in the clinic we are doing many things to minimise any risk of infection, including removing towels and pillows, sanitising the treatment t...able after every use, asking you all regarding recent flu like symptoms or travel and much more. Of course lots and lots of hand sanitiser! We are also minimising the number of people in our reception to under 500. This is more because that is insane and the clinic would literally explode. We will also soon be having the option of Telehealth consults available as well as individual measures for any of our patients at greater risk or who are immunocompromised. As always we are here to help you but are also extremely grateful for all the support the Hills District has given us over the last 7 years. Together we will all get through this. Because your health matters Alex and Alex

09.01.2022 BLUE ZONES Have you heard of them before? They refer to geographic clusters, where residents have been found to live longer than anywhere else and have lower ...rates of chronic diseases like dementia, some cancers and heart disease. Could there be a fountain of youth? There are currently 5 blue zones we know about: Ikaria, Greece- where the population lives 8 years longer than the rest of Greece. Okinawa, Japan- where residents have the the world's longest life expectancy, 84 years for men and 90 years for women. Sardinia, Italy Nicoya, Costa Rica Loma Linda, California Interestingly, there are dietary commonalities! Being largely plant-based, including whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds, and less dairy, meat or fish. Predominantly whole foods, with very little highly processed foods. Legumes are key in these diets- think lentils, beans, chickpeas and soy. In fact, Okinawa has the highest tofu consumption per capita! They eat until they are 80% full and don't overeat. Beyond diet, there are also lifestyle factors that likely contribute to their health outcomes: They all include activity naturally throughout their day and lead physically active lives. Some do consume wine and tea, which may be beneficial, though the emphasis is on these beverages being had at meal times with friends and family. On that same note, they have many factors which promote positive mental health like strong social connectivity, a sense of purpose and managing stress well. This is observational data, but many of these factors have been linked individually to improved health and longevity. This photo is actually from my trip to Hawaii and not a blue zone. Funnily enough, the choice of the "colour" of the zones is only due to blue circles being drawn on maps...not related to being near water like my brain continues to instinctively think.
