22.01.2022 Desktop, Laptop or Tablet? OK, so you want to upgrade your computer but dont know whether to get a laptop, desktop or just buy a tablet? What are the pros and cons of each? Desktop PCs have the advantage of being easy to repair (most are composed of non-proprietary components) and are usually more powerful than laptops or tablets for around the same money spent. They are also easier to upgrade and can support more powerful components (especially CPUs & GPUs). If you need ...to edit HD photos or videos, do any kind of CAD work or are into high end gaming a desktop PC is the way to go. Modern laptops can perform almost as good as many desktops these days. A Windows laptop can run all Microsoft Office suites and most other software without any issues (always check the system requirements first just to make sure!) but if online gaming is your thing or your work involves using design suites such as Photoshop or Autocad you might want to stick to a desktop. Laptops are also more prone to overheating than desktops and have many proprietary parts that can make repairs difficult (and expensive!). If you dont use any fancy software, arent into shoot em ups and you like the idea of being able to work anywhere around the house (or away from it) then a laptop is a good choice. Now, if mobility is what you crave then a tablet may be for you. Currently most tablets can do around 80% of what a desktop or laptop can. Tablets make it easy to check your emails, surf the web, Facebook, curl up and read an e-book, watch movies or Youtube videos, listen to music and Skype your friends. Using Microsoft Office, Photoshop, Autocad and most accounting software is not possible on an iPad or Android tablet though; you are limited to what apps are available at the App Store or Google Play. Microsoft has tried to bridge the gap between laptops and tablets with Windows 8 and there are some tablets on the market (such as the Surface & Surface Pro tablets by Microsoft) that will let you run software designed for Windows. This might be a good compromise if you want to run fairly basic software such as Office but the hardware specs of many Windows 8 tablets still make it difficult to run many resource intensive software suites that would run smoothly on a laptop or desktop computer. I hope that this post has shed some light on the pros and cons of desktops, laptops and tablets. If you are looking at purchasing something soon and would like some more advice feel free to give me a call. (I have purposely avoided the Apple/Android debate as that would be a whole other post, lest to say that I am enjoying my new Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 :-) )

20.01.2022 Thinking of buying a new computer before the end of the financial year? You might want to opt for a solid state hard drive (SSD). Although SSDs are a little dearer than conventional hard disk drives they are up to 10X faster and because there are no moving parts SSDs can withstand shock much better than conventional drives.

18.01.2022 Currently the most common computer malware affecting Your I.T. Guy customers in Melbourne, Australia is the AFP (Australian Federal Police) ransomware virus which locks the infected user out of his/her PC for phony offences such as viewing child pornography & copyright infringements as well as a list of other scary cybercrimes demanding you pay a fine of $100 to unlock your PC. This is a scam; under no circumstances should you pay the $100 fine. The AFP ransomware will often... only affect a single user account so if you can log in via another user (or through the Administrator account) and perform a Windows system restore to an earlier date (before the virus hit) you should be able to remove the virus yourself. If you have been infected and are unable to perform a Windows system restore phone Your I.T. Guy on 1300 48 48 92 to arrange a technician to come on-site and remove the virus for you.

17.01.2022 Weve all been there; its 6pm and youre just about to sit down to dinner when the home phone rings. No one calls your home phone aside from your mother and telemarketers but what if its mum? You pick up the phone. ---... "Hello this is Adam from Microsoft, it is important that we speak to the person responsible for your PC, we have received a 4325 (or any other arbitrary number) error from your computer." "What does that mean?" you ask, starting to get a little worried. "A 4325 error is very serious, if you go to your computer I can show you" he replies. Come to think of it, your computer has been running a little slow lately, it even froze the other day. You put your dinner aside and login to your PC. "I am logged in now." you say, sitting in front of your laptop. "If you give me remote access to your computer I can show you." --- This scenario (or scenarios just like it) is repeated thousands of times every day all around the world. Once the scam telemarketer gets access to your system they will usually open the Windows Event Viewer and show you errors which they claim are very serious and/or related to viruses on your PC. Then they will run some sort of application to "fix" the issue and ask for your credit card details. The amount charged varies but usually ranges between $150 and $300. Microsoft will NEVER phone you without you having first contacted them. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCE should you give anyone you dont know (who you havent contacted first) access to your computer regardless of how professional they sound on the phone. If you have given access to your computer you should run a virus scan immediately and consider getting a technician in to ensure that your computer is secure. If youve paid via credit card, contact your card provider immediately and cancel the card. If you have paid via PayPal, contact PayPal right away to see if they can reverse the payment.

08.01.2022 Five simple tips to keep your PC running smoothly: 1. Dont install any PC optimisation or registry cleaning software. There are hundreds of so called optimisation programs on the market which promise the world yet rarely deliver, and often compromise the integrity of your Windows PC. Although some can (in some circumstances) marginally improve the speed of your computer, most have little to no measurable effect, and many will actually cause unwanted problems. 2. Create resto...re points. If you are unsure about installing a new piece of software, create a Windows System Restore point before the installation so you can revert the PC back to this point if something goes wrong. This is by no means full proof but it can often get you out of a bind. 3. Secure your computer. Make sure you have a current anti-virus subscription and run regular malware scans. There are many great free anti-virus suites available that will give you a good level of protection against some of the latest threats out there. Microsoft Security Essentials, AVG Free and Avast are all great choices which update themselves automatically and can be set to perform a system scan periodically. Just make sure they are up to date and running! 4. Turn off your computer properly. Unless Windows has completely frozen and you have no other option, never shut down your PC by pressing the power button; always shut down by selecting shut down from the Windows Start menu or Windows 8 Charm bar. 5. Back Up! This wont improve the performance of your PC but backing up (preferably on and off site) regularly will one day get you out of trouble. It is important to remember that every hard drive will fail at some point; your hard drive may last a day, a year or a decade but it will fail and if it fails and you havent backed up your files it can be difficult, expensive and sometimes even impossible get your data back.

06.01.2022 Windows 8.1 rumoured to be released to the general public late September. The long anticipated Windows 8 upgrade will likely be released near the end of September if the latest round of internet rumours are to be believed. It is expected that the 8.1 upgrade (nicknamed Windows Blue) will return the greatly missed Start Menu, allow the OS to boot directly into Desktop Mode as well as a whole range of other improvements and greater integration with Xbox One and Windows Phones. Windows 8.1 will be a free upgrade to anyone already running Windows 8.
