21.01.2022 29 August 2017Media Release Turnbull Government backs workers on superannuation The Government today announced a further package of reforms to give the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) near real-time visibility over superannuation guarantee (SG) compliance by employers.... The Government will provide the ATO with additional funding for a Superannuation Guarantee Taskforce to crackdown on employer non-compliance. The package builds on legislation already announced to close a legal loophole used by unscrupulous employers to short-change employees who make salary-sacrifice contributions to their superannuation. The Minister for Revenue and Financial Services, the Hon Kelly ODwyer MP, said employers failure to meet their SG obligations to their employees has been a problem ever since the SG was introduced in 1992. Employers who deliberately do not pay their workers superannuation entitlements are robbing their workers of their wages. This is illegal and wont be tolerated, Minister ODwyer said. The Turnbull Government is taking action to safeguard and modernise the SG so employers cant hide from their legal duty. We will give all Australians confidence that the superannuation system is working in their best interests. The package includes measures to: Require superannuation funds to report contributions received more frequently, at least monthly, to the ATO. This will enable the ATO to identify non-compliance and take prompt action; Bring payroll reporting into the 21st century through the rollout of Single Touch Payroll (STP). Employers with 20 or more employees will transition to STP from 1 July 2018 with smaller employers coming on board from 1 July 2019. This will reduce the regulatory burden on business and transform compliance by aligning payroll functions with regular reporting of taxation and superannuation obligations; Improve the effectiveness of the ATOs recovery powers, including strengthening director penalty notices and use of security bonds for high-risk employers, to ensure that unpaid superannuation is better collected by the ATO and paid to employees super accounts; and Give the ATO the ability to seek court-ordered penalties in the most egregious cases of non-payment, including employers who are repeatedly caught but fail to pay superannuation guarantee liabilities. The package reflects the key recommendations in the Final Report of the SG Cross-Agency Working Group released on 14 July 2017, which was established by Minster ODwyer late last year. The Government did not accept the Working Groups recommendations to soften penalties for non-compliant employers. Sourced from ATO Newsletter

07.01.2022 Why AdWords just got a bit more expensive By James McGrath on 13th Oct 2016 google_adwords If youre an SME using Googles AdWords, its about to get 10 percent more expensive.... Yesterday Google started emailing customers to inform them that they would start charging them GST on transactions on Google products. It said that from 1 November, GST will start to appear as a line item on customers monthly invoices. The GST change also affects its G-Suite product. The change is a relatively big deal given the huge number of small businesses that use AdWords to market their business. There have been recent changes to GST law taking effect from 1 October relating to transactions between Australia and overseas-based businesses. Some overseas businesses will now be totally exempt from registering for GST. Companies such as Google Australia which does a lot of business in Australia will now be forced to enter the system. Google used to charge for AdWords out of its Singapore office, but from 1 November it will start charging for AdWords from Google Australia. As part of the 1 October tax changes, those businesses in Australia which have to enter the GST system are: Businesses that are based in Australia for more than 183 days in a 12-month period Have a GST turnover of $75,000 or more Google Australia meets these criteria rather handsomely. So, from 1 November youll start to see GST charged on AdWords monthly invoices. If youre using AdWords you should get an email or have already gotten an email from Google about the change. So why is all this happening? About 18 months ago then communications minister Malcolm Turnbull unveiled a plan to charge the likes of Facebook and Google GST on advertising. It was part of the broader debate at the time around getting multinational companies to pay their fair share of tax for activities carried out in the Australian market. According to The Australian, Australian businesses spent up to $2.4 billion on online advertising on platforms such as Google and Facebook, making the introduction of GST on these services potentially a $240 million money-spinner for the government.
