11.01.2022 Coco is an 11-month-old, male entire, poodle puppy who presented to Dr. Jason Smith in May with a condition called Legg-Calve-Perthes. Legg-Calve-Perthes disease is also known as avascular or aseptic necrosis of the femoral head, in which the head of the femur (the ball in the ball-and-socket joint that forms the hip) spontaneously begins to degenerate. Over time, this degeneration will cause the collapse of the hip and lead to arthritis. The exact cause of this condition i...s unknown, however, a genetic cause for this condition is suspected. Legg-Calve-Perthes disease causes a dog to limp on the affected leg and eventually causing the dog to place no weight on the affected leg. In some cases, pain and lameness can develop suddenly. It is uncommon for Legg-Calve-Perthes to affect both hips. Legg-Calve-Perthes disease is most commonly seen in small dogs, under 10 kgs and commonly affects terriers and toy breeds. Lameness is most frequently observed between five and eight months of age but can be seen as early as three months or as late as 18 months. Legg-Calve-Perthes is diagnosed by radiographs (x-rays). As the disease becomes more advanced, the femoral head will become deformed with significant evidence of arthritis in the joint and possible fractures. Coco had a surgery called a femoral head osteotomy (FHO)/excision arthroplasty. In this surgery, the head of the femur is surgically removed, allowing the body to heal with scar tissue. Coco is making a good recovery after his procedure

03.01.2022 Cat Adoption Story The Hospital Kittens We had four little, teeny kittens brought into the clinic 7 weeks ago, after being discovered at a local hospital. One kitten had fallen between the walls and had to be rescued. Once they were brought into the clinic, they were aged at around 1 week old. They went home with our wonderful nurse Tara who hand reared them up until recently. Sadly the smallest and weakest kitten didn’t make it, however the other three grew wonderfully. A...t Tara’s home they were well socialized with her two little dogs, her grandson, parents and many other friends and family. The result has been three healthy, friendly little kittens! Two kittens went home recently with two of the human nurses who saved them initially, and the final kitten has gone home with one of our existing clients. 01.01.2022 Leo was brought into the clinic in May 2020 by a member of the public after being found laying in the yard of an empty home. He was in a terrible state. It was obvious that he was injured, most likely hit by a car and had been neglected for at least a month. When Leo came to us and following a thorough examination by our Vets, Leo was diagnosed with a fractured femur that was healing naturally and also a healing pelvis that had been fractured in multiple places. He had all ov...er demineralisation of his bones and was also suffering from a diaphragmatic hernia. Leo was semi-paralysed and extremely malnourished. We extensively advertised his whereabouts with us at the clinic but unfortunately no one came forward. We cared for him, providing him with all the appropriate medical treatments, nutritious food and lots of love. Incredibly he started walking around within a week of being cared for. He has wormed his way very quickly into the hearts of all the staff. It was decided that due to his injuries and ongoing care, he wouldnt be entered into the cat adoption program. We decided to keep Leo as the clinic cat so he would get all the love and attention he deserves as well as all the ongoing monitoring and medical care he requires. Leo has come along in leaps and bounds since he first came in, he is now a beautiful, healthy, adventurous boy! You can find him galloping and stalking us around the clinic, sleeping on his cat stand or any other comfy and warm spots. He is playful, mischievous and incredibly friendly maybe a little too friendly with visiting cats and dogs!
