18.01.2022 How do you soften and relax your hands when riding? I guess the first thing is to realize holding the reins is like holding a glass of water. If you hold the glass of water too tight, glass is going to smash all over your hand. If you hold the glass of water too soft you're going to drop the glass and the water will go on the ground. So there's an element of tension required to hold the glass. It's the same as the rein. Hold the rein to loose it's going to slip through... your fingers. Hold the rein too tight and you're never going to feel when the horse softens its jaw. Your horse will start being dead to the bit because you're being so firm in the mouth. So in order to be able to have those talking real fingers, you need a soft wrist and you need to have an amount of tension to obviously keep your hand there and keep everything there without it being too forceful and too strong. Trust that helps. Just hold some glasses of water and try muscle memory and use what you do for that on the reins. Lots of practice makes perfect!
