16.01.2022 REAL TOOLS I love seeing kids use real tools. It demonstrates to them that we can trust them to learn to use the tools properly and responsibly. What a sense of pride and achievement they can feel at just the opportunity to use a hammer, saw or whittling knife. During the school holidays we're practicing using fire strikers at home. It's something new for my 5yo son and he's struggling a bit to get a spark going. We'll persist and I'm sure he'll be making his own 5-minute... fires soon enough! Of course it goes without saying that you'll need to supervise and support your children through learning how to use the tools safely. Fabric printing activity in our 'Your Wild Imagination' book. 09.01.2022 School Holiday fun My little fam had a brilliant day at Monarto Safari Park today None of us had been before and it was great to see the animals up close and learn some interesting facts. Did you know that giraffes have 4 stomachs?! My daughter especially loved it It was hard for her to choose a favourite (she made a shortlist which included every animal we saw ) but her reactions to the giraffes and the cheetahs were most memorable. Wow! So beautiful was said ab...out 2659017 times We decided to go to Monarto because I have recently done some work with Adelaide Zoo to create a range of nature craft animals for their school holidays program. I’ll share some more of the animals in my stories. So if you’re Adelaide based, make sure you book ahead for a day at either Monarto or Adelaide Zoo these holidays. You can get a copy of both my books from the gift shop at Adelaide Zoo while you’re there!
09.01.2022 School holiday idea Hang a tyre swing on a tree in your garden. It can be a real tyre for kids, or a small wood disk swing for your toys! Ask at your local tyre repair shop for a clean undamaged tyre - they'll give it to you for free! Then grab some rope that's strong and soft on the hands. You'll probably want a piece of materials to pop under the rope where it will swing on the tree to protect the branch. Research a couple of knots on the internet and get started!
