As we grapple with the challenges of a COVID world, the Catholic Bishops of Queensland have called Catholics to consider Catholic Social Teaching as they prepare to participate in the Queensland State Election on October 31. 19.01.2022 Todays Gospel | Luke 9:18-22 Once when Jesus was praying alone, with only the disciples near him, he asked them, Who do the crowds say that I am? They answered, John the Baptist; but others, Elijah; and still others, that one of the ancient prophets has arisen. He said to them, But who do you say that I am? Peter answered, The Messiah of God. He sternly ordered and commanded them not to tell anyone, saying, The Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejecte...d by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. Some thoughts on today's scripture Jesus asks his disciples Who do the crowds say that I am? Let us look at Jesus putting that question; how do I respond today? To what extent is Jesus the norm of my values, actions? To what extent do I make all my decisions with reference to Him? #dailyscripture #sacredspace #DJYM

13.01.2022 Todays Gospel | Luke 8:19-21 Then Jesus' mother and his brothers came to him, but they could not reach him because of the crowd. And he was told, "Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you." But he said to them, "My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it." Some thoughts on today's scripture... A Jew is one whose mother is a Jew; a Christian is one who has been baptised and believes that Jesus is the Son of God and is a committed follower of his. There is no such thing as a born Christian; one can be born into a Christian family and the family may well see that one becomes a disciple of Christ and so become a real not just a nominal Christian. Discipleship, not family, determines whether one is or is not Christian. Although St. Luke follows St. Mark and St. Matthews, he gives a different sense to the Lords words. It is worth getting your New Testament and reading the three accounts of this incident (Lk. 8: 19-21 Mt.12:46-50, Mk. 3: 31-35). Luke does not contrast the natural family to the family of disciples. There is simply praise for his mother and brothers: my mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and put it into practice. In other words, they are disciples. This change marks a development of Marys portrayal in the New Testament from receiving no mention in Pauls writings, through her prominence in the infancy narratives to her iconic status at the foot of the Cross in Johns gospel. #dailyscripture #sacredspace #DJYM #hearthewordofgod

12.01.2022 Todays Gospel | Luke 8:1-3 Soon afterwards Jesus went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. The twelve were with him, as well as some women who had been cured of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, and Joanna, the wife of Herod's steward Chuza, and Susanna, and many others, who provided for them out of their resources. Thoughts on today's scripture... Luke names three Galilean women followers of Jesus: Mary of Magdela, Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herods steward, and Susanna. The first two appear in the passion/resurrection narrative. The other Gospels describe their appearance in that narrative but only Luke informs us that they served Jesus and the Twelve out of their means during the public ministry. They symbolize the thousands who have served Christs Church. However, some scholars have accused Luke of being patriarchal in his depiction of the women as mere household workers. Other scholars have come to Lukes defence. However, this brief episode shows that the sacred writers were men of the first century AD and had the presuppositions of their time. This reminds us that we have to keep in mind that the culture of the Scripture writers reflect cultural attitudes and values that we would not accept today and so we must carefully distinguish these from the religious message of the Gospel. #dailyscripture #sacredspace #DJYM

09.01.2022 We're counting down at DJYM!!!! Two days to go to the 'MADE KNOWN' Youth Retreat

09.01.2022 Todays Gospel | Luke 9:7-9 Now Herod the ruler heard about all that had taken place, and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that John had been raised from the dead, by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the ancient prophets had arisen. Herod said, "John I beheaded; but who is this about whom I hear such things?" And he tried to see him. Some thoughts on today's scripture... We are told that Herod had John the Baptist beheaded but do not get the colourful and horrific details found in Mark (6:14-16). Luke emphasizes his curiosity. We must remember that his stewards wife, Joanna, was one of the women followers of Jesus (Lk. 8: 1-3); one can imagine that Herod milked him for snippets of special information about Jesus. An imaginative session of prayer could be listening to a conversation between Herod and his steward about Jesus. #dailyscripture #sacredspace #DJYM

07.01.2022 Todays Gospel | Luke 7:36-50 One of the Pharisees asked Jesus to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee's house and took his place at the table. And a woman in the city, who was a sinner, having learned that he was eating in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster jar of ointment. She stood behind him at his feet, weeping, and began to bathe his feet with her tears and to dry them with her hair. Then she continued kissing his feet and anointing them with the ointment.... Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw it, he said to himself, 'If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what kind of woman this is who is touching himthat she is a sinner.' Jesus spoke up and said to him, 'Simon, I have something to say to you.' 'Teacher,' he replied, 'speak.' 'A certain creditor had two debtors; one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. When they could not pay, he cancelled the debts for both of them. Now which of them will love him more?' Simon answered, 'I suppose the one for whom he cancelled the greater debt.' And Jesus said to him, 'You have judged rightly.' Then turning towards the woman, he said to Simon, 'Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she has bathed my feet with her tears and dried them with her hair. You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not stopped kissing my feet. You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. Therefore, I tell you, her sins, which were many, have been forgiven; hence she has shown great love. But the one to whom little is forgiven, loves little.' Then he said to her, 'Your sins are forgiven.' But those who were at the table with him began to say among themselves, 'Who is this who even forgives sins?' And he said to the woman, 'Your faith has saved you; go in peace.' See more

04.01.2022 We may forget God, but God never forgets us. As part of Dementia Action Week, Father John Chalmers reads a reflection from his recent work titled Dementia and Spirituality.

03.01.2022 Todays Gospel | Luke 9:1-6 Then Jesus called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal. He said to them, 'Take nothing for your journey, no staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money - not even an extra tunic. Whatever house you enter, stay there, and leave from there. Wherever they do not welcome you, as you are leaving that town shake the dust off your feet as a test...imony against them.' They departed and went through the villages, bringing the good news and curing diseases everywhere. Some thoughts on today's scripture Luke here brings the 12 into the forefront of the narrative; they are presented as sharing in the Mission of Christ; they are no longer merely disciples but are given the task of doing what Jesus does; to exercise authority over unclean spirits, curing diseases and proclaiming the kingdom of God. We see the distinction being drawn between a follower of Christ and being another Christ. Followers by following the teaching of Christ and by living according to His values proclaim the kingdom of God but they do not necessarily commit themselves to dedicate their lives to the proclamation of the Gospel. To what extent does your life lean towards being a follower and being another Christ? #dailyscripture #sacredspace #DJYM #sendout #proclaimthekingdom #goodnews

03.01.2022 Todays Gospel | Luke 7:31-35 Jesus said, 'To what then will I compare the people of this generation, and what are they like? They are like children sitting in the market-place and calling to one another, "We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not weep." For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say, "He has a demon"; the Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, "Look, a glutton and a drunkard..., a friend of tax-collectors and sinners!" Nevertheless, wisdom is vindicated by all her children. Some thoughts on today's scripture There are matters which get space in the Gospel, but which are not hot topics for us. The relationship between John the Baptist and Jesus has long been settled but at the time of the Gospels, it was a matter of discussion and debate. To over-simplify the issue; to some followers of John, it was clear that since John baptised Jesus, he must be above Jesus. Today, we can leave that issue aside and look at the moral issue the passage raises. To what extent do we address situations, motivated by our attitudes rather than by principles. Some we call gluttons and others we call possessed because it suits us. Reflection on the situation in our world shows that this this simple saying of Jesus casts a light on our badly polarised world and, also on our own judgements. #dailyscripture #sacredspace #DJYM

02.01.2022 Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows | John 19:25-27 Meanwhile, standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mothers sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, Woman, here is your son. Then he said to the disciple, Here is your mother. And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.

01.01.2022 Oh, what a feeling! There were lots of energetic kids at Run Club this morning Classes are still researching their countries and sharing facts, crafts and games with the rest of the school.
