23.01.2022 Hi everyone, Firstly we'd like to thank you all for your support in responding to our Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance) event. It is with great regret that we inform you that we have decided to postpone this year's Youth HEAR Yom HaShoah Commemoration Event due to COVID-19, in accordance with the Government guidance regarding social distancing and large-scale events.... We will be posting any alternative Yom HaShoah commemorative plans and future events on our Youth HEAR Facebook page, so please follow us to stay in the loop. Again, we apologise, and urge you all to stay safe during these uncertain times. Thank you, Youth HEAR

20.01.2022 The red carpet was recently rolled out for Holocaust survivor Jack Holzberg, who was discharged from quarantine at a nursing home in New Jersey after recovering from COVID-19. His granddaughter, Erica Wasserman, shared a video on Facebook, showing Holzberg exiting the facility with his family and nursing staff clapping and cheering him on. "A moment of hope and light during this hard time," wrote Erica, adding that her grandfather "personifies strength and positivity. We ar...e beyond grateful to everyone who cared for him and we can’t wait for the day when we can all celebrate together". https://www.facebook.com//pcb.10106843/10106843199175881/

17.01.2022 Today is Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day), the official day designated to mourn the victims of the Holocaust. We had intended to commemorate this day by coming together with hundreds of youth from across different communities. While we may not be able to have this commemoration in person, our community has all come together to remember the victims of the Shoah and #LightACandle.... Through this, we keep their memory alive and each hold our own personal commemoration. #LightACandle . Share the stories. Share the memories. Say Never Again.

17.01.2022 For decades, on Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day), the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies hosts a commemoration bringing hundreds from diverse communities in NSW together to remember the victims of the Holocaust. Unfortunately, this year, we are unable to physically be together for Yom HaShoah commemorations. However, The Jewish Board of Deputies has worked hard to move their moving ceremony to the digital world for the first time. Please join us tomorrow at 7:00pm for the J...ewish Board of Deputies Live Streamed commemoration, where we will still come together as a community, albeit virtually, to reflect on the unimaginable atrocity and keep the memory of those we lost alive. Link to stream will be here: www.nswjbd.org. https://www.facebook.com/events/s/yom-hashoah-streaming-commemor/949790315419262/

16.01.2022 On 9-10 November 1938, Nazi forces & rioters set fire to or destroyed over two hundred synagogues, damaged 7,000 Jewish-owned businesses, arrested 30,000 Jews, and murdered 91 Jews in Germany, Austria and the Sudetenland. It became known as Kristallnacht The Night of Broken Glass and marked the onset of the Holocaust. This Monday 9 November at 7:30pm, hear from celebrated author, therapist and Holocaust survivor Dr Edith Eger, who will be the keynote speaker at the NSW J...ewish Board of Deputies Kristallnacht Commemoration. Dr Eger is the author of "The Choice" - a testament to resilience inspired by her own story of survival, and "The Gift" - a practical guide to healing. The commemoration will feature a ceremony followed by an online interview with Dr Eger by Joanna Kalowski, daughter of a Kristallnacht survivor and member of our Sydney Jewish community. 15.01.2022 Every year, on Yom HaShoah, March Of The Living participants from all over the world come together at Auschwitz to commemorate the Holocaust. While at Auschwitz, participants write personal messages on wooden plaques and place them in the railway tracks leading into Birkenau. This act gives individuals the opportunity to remember and honour the incomprehensible loss that took place where they stand. Seeing the railway tracks covered thousands of personal messages forms a powe...rful and incredibly moving message of unity. This tradition commemorates the lives lost, honours those who survived and pays tribute to the heroes who risked their lives for others. This year, in light of the cancellation of the program, International March of the Living has created an online platform where you can create your very own virtual plaque. Join us in honouring those lost in the Holocaust, as well as committing to the fight against worldwide antisemitism, prejudice and racism by declaring that #NeverMeansNever. https://nevermeansnever.motl.org/ March Of The Living Australia International March of the Living

15.01.2022 In March of this year we were deeply saddened to learn of the loss of Agi Adler. An unassuming Hungarian with a sharp wit, kind eyes and mischievous smile, Agi’s life serves as a reminder that after witnessing the horrors of the Holocaust, the sheer ability to go on amounts to an absolute triumph of the human spirit. Agi was a remarkable woman, a cherished presence in the front row of Youth HEAR events and Harry's grandmother.... May her memory be a blessing.

14.01.2022 98-year-old Holocaust survivor, Marianne Schwartz, has become Victoria’s oldest COVID-19 conquerer! Commenting on her battle with COVID-19, she stated it certainly was not my most difficult challenge but it was a big challenge. Marianne survived three Concentration Camps, including Auschwitz, and noted that her determined nature helped her fight the virus. ... 12.01.2022 You’re home? Do you have a blanket? Do you have anything to eat? Nobody is hitting you? Do you know that your daughter and grandchildren are healthy? So it’s not bad. Stop hating each other. Stop inciting each other They lived through the darkest period in history and are now living in isolation. Many of the survivors with us today are citing loneliness, but not fear. They call for optimism, perspective and an end to blame and incitement over the COVID-19 pandemic.

12.01.2022 Today is Eddie Jaku’s 100th Birthday! Eddie is the self-proclaimed happiest man on earth, he’s incredible outlook on life and stories of survival have inspired thousands in our community and beyond. Eddie volunteered to speak at our first ever event in August 2018 and left a lasting impression on a group of young adults. We are eternally grateful for his ongoing support. Last year, after his stand-out talk at TEDx Sydney, Eddie received a standing ovation from over 6000 peo...ple, with almost half of the audience approaching him after just for a handshake or a hug. While today, due to current circumstances, we can’t give Eddie a handshake or a hug for his 100th birthday, we encourage others to leave in the comments birthday messages for us to pass onto Eddie. Eddie has said When this is all finished, we’ll have a big party. And in the meantime, as we navigate an uncertain period, Eddie’s many messages to not hate have been more pertinent than ever. If we don’t hate, we won’t fight. Humans have to behave like humans, not fight each other. https://ajn.timesofisrael.com/a-very-happy-birthday/

10.01.2022 On April 5, 1944, after Germany took control of Hungary, Hungarian Jews were made to wear a yellow star. Two days later, it was decided to put them into ghettos. It took just nine days to implement this. It was April 16. Yesterday, April 16, was the Memorial Day of the Hungarian Victims of the Holocaust, where we remember the 437,402 Jews from Hungary and territories controlled by Hungary who were deported to death camps in just 56 days between May 15 and July 9, 1944. Follow...ing the Holocaust, numerous Hungarian survivors came to Australia, where they have been able to start new lives, have families, and become prominent contributors to our multicultural society. Pictured is The Shoes on the Danube Bank in Budapest. This memorial honours the Jews who were ordered to take off their shoes, before being executed at the edge of the water so that their bodies fell into the river and were carried away.

09.01.2022 Youth HEAR Co-Founder and Managing Director, Julia Sussman, was recently featured in March Of The Living Australia’s ‘Alumni Spotlight’. She shares her experiences, what drove her to found Youth HEAR and why it is our responsibility as a generation to take on the role of educators, so we can continue to share the memory of the Holocaust and truly be able to say ‘Never Again’.

07.01.2022 Survivor Testimony has become as important to witness than ever. While the number of survivors still with us sadly decreases year by year, those that are with us, and survivor descendants, can still share their incredible stories of resilience during some of the darkest days in human history. Zikron BaSalon provides a way to witness survivor testimony in an intimate setting and engage with the survivors in a discussion. Unfortunately, due to current circumstances, this year... we are unable to gather physically in a living room with survivors. However, Shalom, the Sydney Jewish Museum and March Of The Living Australia have organised eight virtual gatherings for people to join from their own living rooms. The virtual gatherings all take place Tuesday night and registration can be found here: https://www.shalom.edu.au/event/zikaron-basalon/

07.01.2022 Melbourne, 2020 and Anti-Semitism is still rife. These two Jewish brothers spoke to the The Australian Jewish News about their experiences of Anti-Semitic bullying over the past years. It’s encouraging to see that the Victorian Department of Education is launching a full investigation as response, however it’s crucial that we as a society strengthen our stance against hatred and bullying. This terrible incident is an example of why we, united as a society, must come togethe...r to call out hatred as we see it and work to educate others in order to help prevent further incidents of hatred, prejudice and bullying. https://ajn.timesofisrael.com/they-yelled-heil-hitler-at-me/

06.01.2022 105 years ago today, on 24th April 1915, the official Ottoman attempt to rid the world of the Armenian race began. 1.5 million Armenians, and over 1 million Ass...yrians and Greeks, were murdered in the Armenian Genocide. Today, we remember them as descendants of survivors of the #ArmenianGenocide. We call on Australia to recognise the Armenian, Assyrian and Greek Genocides, and the country's first international humanitarian relief effort to aid surviving orphans. We demand justice from Turkey, whose denial is a continuation of the Genocide. Lest we forget. P.S. Tonight (Friday 24th April 2020) at 7:30pm the Armenian-Australian community will be commemorating the 105h Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide via Livestream on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ArmeniaOnline/live/ and YouTube at www.tiny.cc/genocide105, simulcast on the Armenian National Committee of Australia Facebook and Twitter pages. Please join us and spread the word.

05.01.2022 Music was a buoy for those who played it and those who listened to it in the grim confines of places like Auschwitz... Like many, Italian man Francesco Lotoro recognised the importance of music as a tool to bring light into the darkest of times. For 30 years he has been collecting music composed in Nazi concentration camps, and in 2014 he started on a project build a study center to house an archive of this music in Bartletta, Italy. ... https://www.nytimes.com//mu/music-concentration-camps.html

05.01.2022 In this current climate where hate speech seems to be ingrained in some areas of society, it’s more important than ever to learn how to identify it. Anti-Semitism is the belief or behaviour hostile towards Jews, just because they are Jewish. Unfortunately, we’ve seen an increase in Anti-Semitic attacks globally, and Anti-Semitic rhetoric continues to be spread by prominent individuals, across all industries - politicians, NFL players and rappers alike. ... By developing an understanding of what constitutes Anti-Semitic behaviour, we become equip to call it out when we see it, and ultimately, to stop it in its tracks.

04.01.2022 The recent events in America and around the globe exemplify the consequence of leaving hate and bias unchecked. While many people are taking to the streets to protest the inequality, one tattoo parlour in Kentucky is taking a different approach. Gallery X Art Collective posted an offer on Facebook to cover up any racist, hateful, or gang-related tattoos free of charge. The tattoo parlour has already worked to cover a swastika on a man's chest, Confederate flags and other sym...bols of hate. "A lot of people when they were younger just didn’t know any better and were left with mistakes on their bodies. We just want to make sure everybody has a chance to change". What an amazing initiative! https://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/kentucky-tattoo-parlor-off/
