25.01.2022 Awesome youth workers wanted! We are seeking reliable and passionate youth workers to help make a difference to the lives of local young people. About us ... Youth Involvement Council is based in South Hedland, and offers a youth drop-in centre, crisis accommodation, social enterprise, and Mingle Mob outreach and patrol. We work with at-risk young people to bring positivity to their lives. We empower them to make good choices and feel better about the future. About the role Working Tuesday to Friday in varying shifts between the hours of 2:00-10:00pm (rostered start and end time varies), plus some Saturdays (four hour shifts), successful candidates will be able to work well in a team and show initiative in a dynamic and often challenging role; and will demonstrate a willingness to work from a trauma-informed position and actively learn more about youth work, protective behaviours and mindfulness. The ability to work with large numbers of young people, some displaying challenging behaviours, is essential, as is the ability to follow directions and procedures, and complete workplace documents and forms. A willingness to take on a variety of tasks, which may include cleaning and manual outdoor tasks, is important. 24.01.2022 Today is the first official day for the August Share the Dignity collection drive. Period poverty affects many young women in our community so YIC is proud to collaborate with Woolworths Port Hedland and Share the Dignity Australia to ensure local women can access sanitary products. Help give women doing it tough the choice of how they deal with their periods by grabbing an extra pack of pads, tampons, menstruation cups or period undies and popping them into the box at Woolworths. #sharethedignity #endperiodpoverty #empoweringyouth #periodpoverty #grabanextrapack #youthinvolvementcouncil
24.01.2022 Our Deadly Hearts and Youth Centre programs will be closed for a few days later this month to allow our staff to take part in essential training on protective behaviours, trauma informed practice, disability care, and responding to illicit drug use. These skills are critical: most of the clients we work with - over 400 active clients last financial year - are assessed as at extreme risk, and our youth workers support those young people in their journey through healing to...wards recovery, so they can maintain functional relationships and cope with the pressures of daily life. Friday 21 August - closed Monday 24 August - closed Tuesday 25 August - closed Wednesday 26 August - closed #YouthInvolvementCouncil #empoweringyouth
23.01.2022 Unfortunately YIC HQ will be closed for afternoon programs until Tuesday 24 November. We will have a vehicle available to provide transport home in case some children do not get the message. Fresh Start will be open as normal for delicious coffee and food. Our Youth Accommodation Program will also operate as normal.... We look forward to seeing our afternoon crew again on Tuesday. #YouthInvolvementCouncil See more
23.01.2022 Last week we received an amazing donation of medical-grade hand sanitiser from Craig de Meillon as part of Reach Out WorldWides Clean 1 Initiative. Hand sanitiser is hard to source at the moment, and is a really practical way to keep our team safe and able to continue helping young people and their families. Reach Out WorldWide is part of a group of first responders who are buying, manufacture and delivering hand sanitiser made to the recipe of the World Health Organisatio...n to frontline workers. Craig has been sharing the #Clean1Initiative love around the Pilbara, supporting local organisations delivering essential services. You can support the work of the Clean 1 Initiative via Gofundme at : https://www.gofundme.com/f/hand-sanitizer-manufacturing Thanks so much Craig, @reachoutww and @clean1initiative #YouthInvolvementCouncil #empoweringyouth #reachoutworldwide #roww
22.01.2022 Its with heavy hearts that we have made the decision to close our Deadly Hearts and Youth Centre programs as of Monday 23 March for a period of two weeks this may change as the situation changes. Our highest priority is always the safety of our young people, our staff, and our organisation, and community as a whole. Strategies such as social distancing are very difficult to implement in an organisation such as YIC; our kids love to play around, with each other and with ...our staff. We love that about them, but keeping your distance is not a rule we can enforce. We are highly conscious of the need to reduce the risk of the virus reaching the most vulnerable people in our community, and we acknowledge the part we must play. We also understand that we provide an essential service to the Hedland community, engaging young people in a really positive way and helping them make good choices. We will be working with families to help support our young people in other ways during this time, to help keep the wonderful, steadying influence of our mentors in their lives. We will continue to operate Fresh Start Cafe, Youth Accommodation Project and Mingle Mob, though our patrol services will be reduced. #YouthInvolvementCouncil #empoweringyouth #takecare

19.01.2022 At the beginning of National Reconciliation Week, as we consider vulnerability, closing the gap, and working for a positive future for our young people, the words of Stan Grant (as seen in the #FirstNationsTelegraph) speak to us. The COVID-19 pandemic has reminded us that the most vulnerable the poor, the sick, the elderly, the homeless continue to bear the greatest burden These are people already enduring crippling poverty; inter-generational unemployment; overcrowde...d homes. They are born into a legacy of trauma; a history that weighs down hard. I cant help think Australia has become blasé about this. Each year we recount the closing the gap statistics and each year they tell us the same story: the worst health, housing, education and employment outcomes of any Australians. We are the most impoverished and imprisoned people in Australia. Year after year we are told the same grim story: Indigenous people die on average about 10 years younger than the rest of the population. Yet the closing gap report comes and goes, we talk about it for a day then move on. At YIC, we work with Hedlands most vulnerable residents, providing intense case management to over 100 young people aged 5-25. This Reconciliation Week, our hope is that the statistics do improve, that the gap genuinely begins to close. Because these little people are way more than just statistics You can read Stan Grants full article at the link in our bio. #reconciliationweek #stangrant #YouthInvolvementCouncil
18.01.2022 Please be advised that Deadly Hearts will be closed tomorrow. Stay safe over the long weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Tuesday.
17.01.2022 I am constantly amazed at the work and commitment of the team at YIC to empower young people and help them on their way to brighter futures. Not only can you see, but you can feel everyones love, passion and dedication, invested in our YIC kids on a daily basis; the fact that there are so many people that continually go above and beyond their roles because they truly care about our young people is what makes YIC great. Meet Josh Cowan, Chairperson of the YIC Board. Josh ha...s been part of the team for almost two years, and brings a range of skills and experience to the governance of our organisation. Were so grateful to Josh and to every volunteer who supports us here at YIC; thank you. another great pic by the wonderful Elljay Photography by Lauren Jones #YouthInvolvementCouncil #volunteersrock #empoweringyouth

11.01.2022 Thats a wrap on Youth Week at YIC, and we have to say, its been a Youth Week unlike any other. This year, instead of celebrating Hedlands amazing young people up on stage with Hedlands Got Talent and the Hedland Youth Awards, our team has taken Youth Week to them; its been the Hedland Youth Awards, social distancing style. Our team hit the road this week to deliver prizes (and joy) to the 21 young people who we nominated for a Youth Award this year. Congratulations to ea...ch of the young people listed below, aged from seven through to 21 years old; we think youre incredible! 11.01.2022 Over the past couple of months, weve been supporting more than 70 households to meet daily challenges like putting food on the table, and engaging regularly from a safe social distance with more than 200 youth. Were missing the buzz of having a Youth Centre full of vibrant young people, and were working hard to start a gradual return to normal. Were already helping young people to return to school each day.... From 16 June, our Youth Centre will re-open for 11-17 year olds. Mingle Mob will re-commence in full from 17 June. Our Deadly Hearts for 5-10 year olds will re-open in Week 1 of Term 3, though well continue our outreach support to young people in that age group until then. 05.01.2022 We marked Children’s Week this year at YIC HQ by sharing meditation and mindfulness techniques with our young people, helping to keep them strong and safe. 01.01.2022 Were always grateful for the incredible support we have from our funding partners; organisations such as the WA Department of Communities, BHP Western Australia, Mission Australia and National Indigenous Australians Agency, who share our view that every child is unique; they are all special; and they are all worthy of our time and care. Were even more grateful to them now for their support, standing with us and supporting us, and ensuring the changes were having to make to... our programs wont have an impact on our future funding, our ability to pay our staff, and all of the other big and little things that are crucial to the ongoing viability of a small not-for-profit organisation.
