14.01.2022 I had a slow start with Y Striders. Initially joining 10 years ago as a social member with a once-a-week stroll of 3-4 kms with older walkers. But over time, with the contagious enthusiasm of members and particularly the trainer Deb, I embraced extra sessions and now regularly walk 5-6kms three times a week at a much faster pace and go to my local gym twice a week as well. Having regular walk times and always someone to walk and talk with encourages me to get up and go and... makes the kms fly by - usually brisker than I would by myself. To my surprise I’ve become a morning person with a spring in my step for the rest of the day. Friendships have grown through regular walking but also on our many trips away and social activities through the year. Now fitter in my 60’s than at any time in the past, I find I love the early morning walk, talk and commune with nature the everchanging vista of river, sunrise and birds is both energizing and relaxing. 04.01.2022 The dog died! He was approaching 70 - and so was I! For years, despite being more active in my 40s and 50s, I had come to believe that walking the dog several times each week qualified me as a ‘healthy, active life-styler’. Not so! I’d slowly come to conveniently dismiss the health advice for seniors that moderately vigorous activity, including some strength and flexibility exercise, was required to maintain the daily living capabilities so long taken-for-granted.... Comfortably lifting grandchildren and running after them during their play. Easily standing up from sitting on the ground. Pulling on trousers while standing. Putting on shoes and socks and tying shoe laces with ease. These were all once taken-for-granted daily tasks that I was starting to think about - or modify. Enter Y Striders. My friend Kaye is in a fitness club, said my wife. Why don’t you get back into regular exercise? So, four years ago I joined. For two years I just attended Tuesday and Thursday evening sessions and the more social ‘big’ session on Saturday mornings just to walk or jog. But then I started to sample the delights of the strength and flexibility sessions (and coffee afterwards) alternating them with some walking/jogging on another day or two. Of the seven sessions offered, I now usually attend four. Small daily tasks have become routine again. Yes - I loved our dog. But he’d been ageing me for years! Ken Alexander.
