19.01.2022 Repost from @nurture_neuroscience_parenting "Babies and people of every single age have needs 24 hours a day. Babies needs don’t stop when the sun goes down. Their needs don’t become extra or unnecessary or ignorable or unimportant at night. The stress system of babies becomes activated in the exact same way at night and needs coregulation from a caregiver to stop in the same way. Babies brains are enriched by nurture both daytime and nighttime. All research based professio...nals and organizations read the same neuroscience studies and make recommendations for families on infant care. Every neuroscience informed expert interprets the research to recommend families nurture, meet needs, coach emotions and coregulate stress during the day to enrich brain development and mental health. However many make an exception for nighttime. There is not a shred of evidence that infant stress is less important at night. I urge anyone who thinks nighttime is different to revisit the research. Many neuroscientists, therapists and mental health professionals, including myself, interpret the existing research to show that ignoring babies at night is a potential source of chronic stress. For babies and their caregivers. This does not mean that it’s bad for all babies and parents but it does mean that it is a risk for babies and parents. We do not yet have the perfect study that shows the effects of ignoring infant needs at night on brain development and mental health. But we do have a lot of evidence, I would say more than enough, to recommend we do not ignore infant needs at night. I know it’s hard. I have an infant. But I also know it’s possible for many families to support infants at night. I’ve worked with many families to find creative solutions that consider the whole family. I know that society doesn’t support parents. We don’t have adequate parental leave, we don’t have benefits, we all work a lot, we have our own mental health struggles. I understand why ignoring infants at night is popular. I also understand that it is the healthiest choice in cases when the family’s health is vulnerable. 13.01.2022 This week is Perinatal Mental Health Week and tomorrow we focus on #trauma including #birthtrauma We all know the saying "When a baby is born, so is a mother", but it's not always easy. The birthing experience can be triggering, it can open old emotional wounds that we thought were buried deep and for various reasons, it can cause brand new emotional scars that most of the time are left to fester. As a society we tend to forget the impact our birth has on our emotional wellbe...ing, as it is seen as a physical experience. Yet we know intuitively that our mind and body cannot be separate, for if it is, disconnection occurs and we remain numb to our trauma until it rears it's unpredictable and overwhelming head elsewhere... Birth trauma is often under estimated and it usually goes undiagnosed... as mums we are too devoted to our brand new babies and not to mention sleep deprived and EXHAUSTED to ever fully hold space for our own experience, let alone go to the effort of leaving the house to go to the GP (#Reality !) Not only that, but our friends and family are also besotted with our new bundle that us mummies get overlooked... It's time we included birth trauma in the conversation. If you have a birth story that you feel moved to share, we welcome you to do so in the comments. Maybe you have experienced birth trauma and overcome it? Perhaps you have first hand experience with a local therapist that the YMT community should know about? Or maybe you'd like other mummas to know they're not alone. One of the mums here at Yum Mum Tum headquarters experienced breastfeeding difficulties in those very early newborn days in hospital and feels that had she of been given more uninterrupted time with her baby, instead of the revolving door of midwives, doctors, family and friends, that they would have experienced earlier and easier breastfeeding success.. Tell us... do you feel like you had too many visitors when you gave... birth? And do you think it impacted the start of your breastfeeding journey? Or - are you a pandemic mumma?
