17.01.2022 Further reading on workplace diversity . Posted @withregram @harvard_business_review We hear leaders around the world make the business case for diversity all the time: that it improves the bottom line or results in better decisions. But while these rallying cries demonstrate good intentions, research makes it clear that pushing for diversity *alone* is simply not enough to change the status quo. To effect real change, leaders must go beyond the business case and make a ...more credible, nuanced, and powerful argument for diversity that includes three critical modifications. 1. Platitudes must give way to sound, empirically based conclusions. 2. Business leaders must reject the notion that maximizing shareholder returns is paramount; instead they must embrace a broader vision of success that encompasses learning, innovation, creativity, flexibility, equity, and human dignity. 3. Finally, leaders must acknowledge that increasing demographic diversity does not, by itself, increase effectiveness; what matters is how an organization harnesses diversity and whether it’s willing to reshape its power structure. Tap the link in our bio to learn more about the problems with the current diversity rhetoric and to read more about what a new paradigm could look like.

01.01.2022 Another excellent topic for all business owners . . Posted @withregram @harvard_business_review Too often, disagreements about the importance of wearing masks, whether people should be able to work from home during the pandemic, or who should have won an election turn into heated arguments. Many of us avoid these topics altogether. But what if there’s another approach one that results in more productive discussions, even in the face of differing views and opinions?... Research shows that a technique called conversational receptiveness may help by opening your discussion partner open up to a new point of view. In addition, receptive language is contagious: It makes those with whom we disagree more receptive to our POV in return. Here's how to do it: 1. Acknowledge the other person’s perspective. Recognizing the views of someone you disagree with by saying I understand that or I believe what you’re saying is shows that you are engaged in the conversation. 2. Hedge your claims. Indicating some uncertainty about your own points can signal receptiveness even if you feel truly certain about something. For example, try Allowing employees to create their own work schedules might increase their commitment to the organization" instead of, Allowing employees to create their own work schedules will undoubtedly increase their commitment to the organization. 3. Phrase your arguments in positive terms. For instance, you might say, Let’s consider the possible benefits of having fewer people working on the marketing initiative rather than, We should not have any more people working on the marketing initiative. 4. Point to areas of agreement, even if small or obvious. People usually have some shared values or common beliefs that can bring them together. Those are the values and beliefs to highlight, since doing so makes us feel closer to one another. Adapted from "Disagreement Doesn’t Have to Be Divisive" by Francesca Gino.
