16.01.2022 I've heard it said that God never wastes an experience. It struck me in a funny way recently as I reflected on a particular life experience of mine. What most people probably don't know about me is that my first pet as a child was a baby chicken. My siblings and I found two chicks left at the village dump when we took out the trash one day. One chick was dead, but we rescued the live one and brought it home to care for it. Thus began our adventures with Chickie!... Sadly, our pet ran away into the woods while we were on a family holiday, and we never saw the little chook again. Fast forward 23 years later, and I'm now on a farm in Tasmania, helping look after 50 or so chickens. Here are some things I have learned while caring for the flock: Sometimes, in order for the flock to flourish, you need to cull the troublemakers. We had too many roosters for the number of hens, and some of the roosters were harassing the hens and keeping them from laying. Once we removed the troublemakers, the shift was instantaneous. The flock dramatically settled down and began to find a routine. As we continued to care for them and meet their daily needs of food, water, and shelter, as well as occasionally cleaning up their crap , the hens finally began laying again. Now they're producing more eggs than we can eat, so we have plenty to sell or simply give away to others. From that, I learned: If we want to flourish, we need to deal with the "troublemakers" in our own lives. What are the things that harass us and keep us from living in right relationships with one another and with God? If we "cull" those and care for ourselves and others the way God intends us to, we'll begin to flourish in ways that not only bless us, but also the world around us. And perhaps another takeaway from this could be: If you're faithful in caring for a chick, you'll eventually be trusted with a flock. - Misha, staff #adventures #transformation #lessons #joy #ywam #ywamtasmania #sorell
