19.01.2022 FROM THE CLASSROOM Leverage the awesome power of flashcards by adding an action card. Not only do students retrieve the definitions of terms, but they also interact with this knowledge by drawing, thinking of real-life examples, personifying, coming up with an acronym, etc.

13.01.2022 What a great little strategy to build leadership and communication in a Year 1 class. The teacher uses this by assigning experts in particular topics or skills and when the teacher sees another student requires support in this skill, they encourage the expert student to help someone else learn those skills. Just beautiful!

06.01.2022 Retrieval Practice (using memory to pull concepts out of students’ heads) is one of the most effective ways to not only help students remember facts and concepts; it is also proven to help students apply these more flexibly in the future. One YXL teacher used this technique to review BOLTS in Geography. She asked students to recall the definitions, and then show where these are applied on a map. Just as crucially, she gave students feedback on this straight away, which enabled them to reflect on any gaps or misconceptions in their knowledge. Best practice in action!

02.01.2022 FROM THE CLASSROOM: If your students groan every time you ask them to produce a paragraph (or write ANYTHING), or you want a fresh way for your class to think about your content- think about ‘publishing’ their work through mini books. A YXL teacher recently asked her Science class to put down all the important information about volcanoes in a mini-book. These students had great fun demonstrating their understanding: they decided what should go into their ‘books’ and how they could synthesise the information in a way that was easy to understand. These will look great as a classroom display, too!
