18.01.2022 Normie Rowe began his popular singing career while a young teenager and gathered a youthful following. After producing his first record in 1965, he quickly rose... to national fame, becoming Australias King of Pop in 1968. He had a number of big hits, including It aint necessarily so, and Que sera sera. Rowes career was suddenly interrupted when he was called up to do National Service. The press followed his military service, but it was no substitute for the attention he had received as a touring and recording celebrity. He was duly sent to serve in Vietnam with A Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment. In Vietnam he commanded an armoured personnel carrier, describing the work as, out on the highway, protection for vehicle convoys and land-clearing teams taking in infantry, and things like that. Following his years active service he was released from the army. Rowe has said of his National Service days: "You can look at your life and say that wasn't fair and that killed your career . . . or you can look back and take out of that segment of your life whatever was good. The best friends that I've got are Vietnam veterans". 12.01.2022 Corporal Benjamin Roberts-Smith was born in Perth, Western Australia, in 1978. He joined the Australian Regular Army in 1996 and was posted to the 3rd Battalion..., Royal Australian Regiment, with whom he conducted two operational tours of East Timor. In 2003 he was posted to the Special Air Service, and was on his first operational tour of Afghanistan in 2006 when he was awarded the Medal for Gallantry for his actions as a patrol scout and sniper during Operation Slipper. During his fifth tour of Afghanistan, on 11 June 2010 Roberts-Smith was involved in an operation to hunt for a senior Taliban commander in the Kandahar province. Here he took part in an assault against an enemy fortification, exposing his own position in order to draw fire away from members of his patrol who were pinned down. Fighting at close range, he stormed two enemy machine-gun posts and silenced them. For this action Roberts-Smith was awarded a Victoria Cross. His citation in the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette noted that 'his selfless actions in circumstances of great peril served to enable his patrol to break into the enemy's defences and to regain the initiative ... resulting in a tactical victory'. Following his sixth tour of Afghanistan in 2012 Roberts-Smith was further recognised with a Commendation for Distinguished Service for exceptional leadership, courage, mentoring, and reconnaissance in the 'most difficult and dangerous of circumstances'.

If you have any old photographs or memorabilia of its hotel days from the 1920s through to th...e 1970s, we'd love to hear from you! They could be included in a nostalgic nod to the past in the upcoming redevelopment of the historic building on The Strand. Gleeson Group managing director Therese Smith told Andy Toulson this morning that they intend to make the Queens the "grand entry point for a prestigious hotel." Future plans include a 1000 sq ft multi-purpose concert/conference centre and an edu-tourism precinct.
