21.01.2022 Looks like William has been hanging out at Zara's House. We can not wait to (physically) get back to the business of welcome, learning and championing each other on.
20.01.2022 We found these vintage hurricane lamps in the loft at Zara's House. They are now available for collectors to purchase through Ebay. Please share this link. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/143545158051

18.01.2022 Zara's House is a 'Place of Welcome'. We are looking forward to sharing more stories about Zara's House here and welcoming more like-hearted people into our community.
17.01.2022 WOW! The flowers in our children's outdoor area are really taking off Whilst washing your hands & taking extra care at this time, do take a few moments to appreciate nature, even on a screen...
16.01.2022 Though Zara's House is physically closed for the moment, the kindness, empathy & hope of our volunteers and wider ZH community will always be an... essential service. It reaches far beyond a building
15.01.2022 It might be a while until we are all enjoying a story together during class. Thankfully, many of our hardworking students will still be practising & learning as they read books to their own children.
15.01.2022 Thank you NCIG for giving us the funds to seal our car park. It’s looking pretty good.
13.01.2022 There are whispers that some of Zara's House teachers are beginning to miss the daily 'Name Tag Untangle'. Could that possibly be true?
11.01.2022 Much happiness yesterday when Arfase told us that her husband, Abebayehu Geffersa (Abex) has been awarded his PhD in Economics. He is now lecturing at the University of Newcastle. Congratulations Abex

07.01.2022 2020 classes are well underway! Thanks to an extraordinary amount of work that was done by many volunteers in the holidays, our learning centre and class-rooms are working beautifully for both teachers and students.
07.01.2022 Zara's House was featured in the Newcastle Weekly in the last week of January 2021 https://newcastleweekly.com.au/zaras-house-builds-a-bright/

05.01.2022 The volunteer roles get better and better at Zara's House. Not only is Sue a dedicated & incredible teacher, she recently took on chief 'gorgeous squishy baby cuddler'. Someone has to do it

05.01.2022 As we begin to slowly emerge from isolation our hope is that we see a changing world, more ready than ever to embrace and say... WELCOME
05.01.2022 Dear friends of Zaras House We have reached the decision that we must close for the rest of August. It gives us two cycles of vigilance following possible community transmissions. Today we heard that St Pius College at Kotara will close until next week. A child also travelled on the 26 bus. A Visitor went to the Jesmond, Wallsend and Lambton pubs. Some of our families travelled to Sydney in recent days. An engagement party was held. Many gathered in the park in this lovely... weather. All the aged care facilities in Newcastle are in strict lockdown. We hope nothing will happen, but we need to exercise greater caution. SO, our womens centre and childrens centre buildings will not open until Monday, 7th September. We will, however, encourage members and our friends to feel welcome to meet each other in our gardens in tiny groups . We may not have Classes; but welfare and pastoral care issues can still be addressed while we are social distancing. Here are three suggested activities we can do alone or together: 1. If you have time please go alone, with a friend or your family to see the beautiful Brickworks Park in Victory Parade at Jesmond (Wallsend). It is a 30 minute walk from the Jesmond Shops. The wattle has just started to come out, little wild flowers are peeping through the ferns. Children can play and be awe-inspired by the ducks on the lovely lake. Listen to the frogs. Take photos of what you see and maybe print them at Big W so we can together later begin a new spring project. 2. Take a drive to the Stockton ferry terminal in Mitchell Street Stockton. Park. For about $2.50 catch the ferry across the Port of Newcastle. You and the children can go back and forth as many times as you like as long as you stay on the boat. Feel the fresh wind on your face. Look at the beauty of Newcastle spread out before you. Marvel at the ships passing by. Look at the sky. Take more photos and maybe print some at Big W for about 15cents each. When we come back we will share them. 3. Cook a favourite food that needs some special spice or flavour. Maybe it is your mothers bread recipe or a delicious way of cooking with dates or rice. Take three photos of the food being made. We hope we can start a Zaras House Community Cookbook. Before the end of the year we hope to have squashed our enemy Covid-19 from our area so we can have a Springtime celebration at Zaras House. We can welcome the friends and businesses who have been so generous to us. We can get on with all we want to do we ARE in it together! Sister Diana Santleben (Secretary/Projects Co-ordinator)

01.01.2022 Zara's House UPDATE Zara's House has been closed for classes since Thursday, March 19th, 2020. As restrictions begin to lift across NSW and schools go back, we too hope to open very soon. Currently, we are working to implement new systems that ensure our centre is a place of 'SAFE' welcome and learning for students, friends and volunteers. English classes have recommenced from 10am to 11am on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Please do check back here or our website for updates. Thank you. www.zarashouse.org.au
