25.01.2022 Symptom highlight. Brian fog. Brain frogs. Cog fog. Fibro fog - what ever you call it, it is a common symptom in many chronic health conditions. People living EDS, ME/CFS, fibromyalgia, chronic pain, MS etc all describe different levels of congnitive dysfunction. ... For me, my brain fog can be pretty full on. Due directly to my brainstem compression, but also contributing factors are chronic and widespread pain (Fibro) and EDS. This week alone, Ive muddled up multiple text messages to people in my phone who have the same name , forgotten a doctors appointment (that was in my diary) and Im sure theres more, that Ive forgotten I forgot. Tell me, how brain fog has affected you this week? What have you forgotten, muddled up etc?
25.01.2022 It's a wrap. School holidays done and dusted. Over and out. I am so, completely and utterly exhausted. I'm so ready for tomorrow. Despite rest not being the order of the day. Some time alone, to gather some thoughts, formulate some plans and set a few goals, with timelines to match. ... Over the next week and a half, I'll be really just studying, preparing for an exam, I need to complete with the Pharmacy Board to become an accredited Pharmacist Immuniser. On top of this I have so many advocacy aims and missions I'm keen to get a start on. As well as completing a short course in medical writing I've signed up to (never rains hey). I am so passionate about the community receiving vaccinations, especially these newest ones for COVID which will see life as we once knew it, coming back on line. I plan to write a few short blog style articles on the safety of, vaccination as well as busting some common myths And misconceptions. So please shout out with burning questions you may have surrounding vaccines and I'll try my best to answer it or point you in the direction of some quality evidenced based literature. One of the best ways to ease worries or anxieties around new things, is to educate yourself. . . #Covid #Pharmacistsofinstagram #PharmacistImmuniser #immunisation #pfizerbiontech #Pfizer #ProVax #Informed #EhlersDanlos #Bondi #EDS #Zebra #MCAS #MastCells #POTs #Dysautonomia #Zebra #ZebraBlends #Anxiety #WorryMonster #Educate #EvidencedBasedMedicine

23.01.2022 Internalised ableism? Why do we do it to ourselves? Im still embarassed to admit I need to modify sometimes. I just had a parent meeting at the boys preschool, but due to social distancing we had to do it, standing in the carpark. I forced myself to stand for 40minutes, all the while shifting uncomfortably from foot to foot in pain and in attempts to not have my blood pressure drop, which it does with standing still and can lead to me fainting - thanks dysautonomia. The fu...nny thing is though, I knew wed be standing in the carpark, I could have taken a camp chair or sat on the ground, or if I had my trike sat on the platform, but I forced myself to be like everyone else and to stand to my own detriment. Im still learning and will continue to learn. Accepting my limitations and accepting modifications and using aids to make things easier, my neck brace, ankle braces, pelvic belt, my trike etc is the hardest part of this journey for me. Im content with the slowness in life, infact I feel I thrive with that aspect but feeling comfortable considering myself disabled or as someone with impaired mobility is a hard one to swallow. I know no one would judge me for using aids, why am I judging myself?! I think this is an age old question for those of us with newer onset disability, limited physical capacity etc. #invisibleillness #chronichealth #chronicpain #ehlersdanlos #eds #brainstemcompression #atlantoaxialinstability #lumbarpain #advocate #zebrablends

22.01.2022 I've decided to try and do my immunisation training to be ready to assist with the Covid vaccine rollout should a role arise. I'm really enjoying so far, the switch of brain required to sink deep back into clinical study. I'm not sure I'll even find a suitable role, or gain a suitable role should I find a role to apply for (what a mouthful that sentence was). But I'm going to have a crack. ... EDS it is a disease that weakens the connective tissues of the body, causing pain and discomfort. Many of these individuals wear braces to help manage their daily symptoms. 21.01.2022 Meditation has become such am important and non-negotiable part of my day. The more I meditate the more I enjoy it, and the more benefit I take from it. I practice vedic meditation at least once a day for 20 minutes. I do try and weave little extra pieces of meditation into my day. ... The little extra pieces of meditation, I squeeze in might look like: 1. Mindfully watering the grass and plants, without distraction. 2. Or, Ill take a few minutes when I can catch them, to quieten my mind and practice a few rounds of praniyama breathing. Little extra pieces like this are important. What Im learning is, even the few minutes here and there count and add up to something meaningful. Do you meditate? 19.01.2022 Im so glad, Daisy finally got the diagnosis she deserves. 17.01.2022 The guys wanted to ride separately to me this morning. I let them, despite every other time weve tried, its been a fail. I cave to them, on things like this as I dont want to be an unfun mum or worse let me disability affect them. After already stopping umpteenth times to make adjustments to their bike / scooter we were one block from preschool. Stopped at a busy intersection on Bondi Rd waiting for the flashing red man to flash green, giving the boys a pep talk on how w...e would cross the road. All seemed fine. The flashing man, flashed green. We set off, but Fraser got caught on the wrong side of me and swallowed up by the bit of crowd crossing with us. Other parents and kids on bikes, scooters etc. Fraser frooze. At this moment I stepped off my scooter, just standing alongside it with a hand on the handle bar to push it. But at the same time, one of the bags hanging on the handle bars got caught on the accelerator. The bike started doing circles around me at full speed. Somehow, I managed to hold onto the bike and after about four circles got my free hand to the brake. A man meanwhile got the kids to the other side of the road safely. I had my neck brace on thankfully, but still I am experiencing increased pain and neuro symptoms. I had to hold onto the bike as I knew if I let go, it could have hurt some one badly, I was worried of falling but just held on. The man who helped the kids couldnt believe Id managed not to let it go and stopped it. I always think, my way back when, emergency training as a flight attendant comes in handy in situations like these, I just dig deep and make the situation safe. My inner dialogue quickly turned to, i wish I was more physically capable, im letting the kids down being somewhat disabled, why cant I just walk them to school like everyone else. Arthur, said to me afterwards, mum that was so funny, clearly he wasnt negatively affected. I wish I wasnt so hard on myself, but when I think my disability is affecting the kids or impacting my parenting, I am. Im working on softening my opinion of my limitations. Having a chronic illness is hard and time, I think is the only antidote to this.
17.01.2022 Chronic pain month. September is chronic pain month. I know I talk about pain a lot, but its a big part of my illnesses.... I want to shine a light on the many ways chronic pain can impact patients lives:- 1. Chronic pain, strongly correlates with reduced quality of life (QOL). 2. Reduced QOL can include impairments to mood, impairments to activities of daily living and decreased involvement in social activities. 3. It can place pressure and strain on relationships. 4. It can place pressure on patients with regard to their capacity to work. 5. It can make it difficult for patients to maintain employment and financially contribute to their household. Now of course, this list is by no means exhaustive. Hit me up below, with the ways chronic pain impacts your QOL. : In the bath with loads and loads of #zebrablends #theessentials bathsoak, shoulders and neck strapped by my physio, trying to get some pain relief. 17.01.2022 Shine a light on chronic illness. Ive had a tough week. Amplified pain and neurological symptoms including brain fog. I think as a result of the little incident I had on my trike on Monday. I havent been back on it since. I know I should, but my confidence really took a tumble as well. ... Its been a week of doing the bare minimum, plus extra physio sessions. Today seems a little better (any amount of improvement Ill take as a win). Ive also just self administered my new migraine med (an injectable and replacement for Botox which was worsening my instability) and hoping to see some effect from it over the next week. Ive been reducing caffeine and have been totally caffeine free for three days, have to admit Ive noticed little change from this - I was hoping it might of had a dramatic effect. Its funny, even though I know there is no magic bullet to fix me, as Im so complex, I still get really hopeful when making little changes like reducing caffeine. I think its important to hold onto hope. School drop done = home to cook myself a nice breakfast (self care), meditate then off to physio, again - before charging into the weekend with my loves and a half drained battery. How is everyone else feeling this week? Ive spoken to a few people who are also feeling particularly drained. #zebrablends #chronicillness #ChronicPain #raredisease #rarevoicesaustralia #ehlersdanlos #EhlersDanlos #EDS #advocate #advocacy #bondi #spoonie #IssuesWithMyTissues #ZebraStrong

16.01.2022 5 minutes. 300 seconds. The amount of time I cycled on my stationary recumbent bike today. The first real attempt at cardio I had done in at least a year. Might not seem like much and it certainly is hard to understand how I used to manage 5 spin classes in a week as a young adult and now a very slow and steady 5 minutes is my baseline. But that's life with a chronic and rare disease.... My walking capacity has been really hampered most of this year due to neuro symptoms and a wicked right sided weakness. For some reason of late, things have been improving. Despite having a few inklings of what's been helping, I still really don't know also. Without knowing exactly what's helping, I am able to still cheer myself on, as I am making such good gains to my strength, and the results are pretty bloody awesome. Of course, I'm still very limited by my mobility, and reach fatigue / exertion and experience pain flares (in addition to my base, always there pain) extremely quick, but all the little things I've been working so hard on for the last 18 months or so are really paying off. I do hope that these gains are going to mean I really can delay any surgical intervention for a while (I hope at least 10 years) and manage my condition through modifications / adaptions and pacing. . . . . . . #ButIDontLookSick #InvisibleIllness #EhlersDanlos #EDS #MCAS #Fibro #MECFS #Endo #Migraine #ChronicPain #Disability #Ability #AdaptiveLiving #Advocate #Advocacy #EDSAdvocate #PainPartner #APMAPartner #RVAPartner #Sydney #Bondi #ConsciousBusiness #WorkingHard #BeTheChange #AffectChange #SmashStigmas #SmashMedicBias #craniocervicalinstability #AtlantoaxialInstability #BrainstemCompression
16.01.2022 Dry body brushing: Whats the benefit? Having been practiced in Ayurveda for centuries, this classic ritual is a great way to provide gentle exfoliation to your body prior to taking a bath or shower. 15.01.2022 A quick little reintroduction for those who are new to the ZBs tribe and not entirely sure of the back story. Im Janna, a 35 year old mother and wife and avid rare disease, primarily, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) advocate. Im striving to change the #healthscape for Australians living with, or caring for someone with rare disease.... You see, I was diagnosed with EDS at the ripe old age of 33. But yet, I displayed symptoms most of my life. It shouldnt take this long for people to receive a correct diagnosis. It should be smoother and more straightforward. So I started Zebra Blends, really just to combine two of my passions, making things (aka: arts oil, bath soaks, etc) and raising money for rare disease research and advocacy. A lot is happening behind the scenes with regard to further advocacy and I hope to have some positives to share in the not too distant future. Ive been busy reaching out to exisiting charities, networking and trying to devise ways in which the future for people with rare disease could look differently, could look better and be more hopeful. So, in a nutshell, thats what its all about. 50% of profits from all sales on the #ZebraBlends website go directly to #rarevoicesaustralia, a charity supporting rare disease research and advocacy in Australia.

13.01.2022 Today, September 10 is #RUOK day. Its ok not to be ok. I read a great article recently, shared with me by @emily_l_ly published on @medium written by #TaraHaelle about surge capacity. It really struck a nerve with me. How do we refill our cups, when we reach #surgecapacity or overwhelm saturation, as I like to call it, in the case of an ongoing acute turned chronic disaster, such as the current pandemic. ... Where feelings of being in a funk, and non-funky feelings can coexist. Who else is completely and utterly over this year? I know I try to keep things positive as much as possible. But hey, real is good too, especially today. Does anyone else find lately, they can fluctuate from deep funk to grateful and content all within a moment? I feel this year is constantly fuelled by changing and evolving emotion, that is full of juxtaposition. That feelings so polar opposite to each other, not usually existing in the same moment, can. Juggling this year has been next level. With health issues, a lot of health issues and an evolving level of disability, I am tired. The unrelenting nature of the year that just keeps on giving is heavy. It feels huge to be living through something, like what we are. It is surreal and unimaginable all at the same time. One great thing from this year, is Im learning to be real. To let myself be vulnerable, Im enjoying writing, something about the process is cathartic. Im putting myself out there, making connections with people I didnt think I had the experience or knowledge to reach out to and finding resoundingly, that my ideas and or plans are well received. I want to affect change and I have realised that in order to do that, mostly I have to follow my heart and then the rest will follow. If youre not ok its ok, reach out to a friend or family member, colleague or counsellor. Find someone you feel safe to confide in. Below, in the comments, are some useful resources:

11.01.2022 The puzzle continues. Trying to figure out exactly whats going on in my body is proving the biggest challenge Ive ever encountered. About 9 months ago, I had an epidural blood patch. A procedure to patch a hole in my dura (the membrane made of connective tissue that houses your brain and spinal cord). It was thought I had a spinal fluid leak and was suffering from low intracranial pressure, due to my symptoms. And in all honesty its likely I did, or still do even. But, my... neurosurgeon for a few months now has wanted to investigate the possibility that I in fact have underlying high intracranial pressure issues - which may actually be causing the leaks (the high pressure causes a leak to be sprung, sending you into low pressure, it can be a little bit of a vicious cycle). But whats causing the underlying possible high pressure? Possibly my structural issues around by brainstem at C1-C2. So next steps:- 1. I realised I should cut caffeine, as whilst caffeine is good for low intracranial pressure (why Ive always drunk so much coffee) its terrible for high intracranial pressure (its also likely that I flip / flop between high and low, making it all the extra confusing). 2. I need to book the MRI venogram that my neurosurgeon ordered months ago that Ive been putting off, due to covid, but also the fact it requires a contrast agent for the scan. I hate getting GAD or contrast generally. It has the potential to cause brain inflammation and this terrifies me, I hate the idea of possibly getting worse brain fog, even if its only temporary. So, reducing coffee is going good. Im down to one (trying not to go cold turkey to avoid withdrawal headaches, dont need any extra pain) and Im off to book my MRV. Who else have encountered the mind boggling puzzle that are intracranial pressure issues?
