17.01.2022 We get asked this question so often..... So below is our answer... Hair is made up of three layers (see image 2). Conditioners focus on two parts of the hair follicle. The cortex/keratin layer (inner part) and the cuticle layer the outer layer (see image 3). The cortex is made with keratin proteins and is what makes hair strong. Most salon prescribed conditioners will include a keratin active ingredient to replace lost proteins helping strengthen the hair, bringing back elas...ticity and spring in your hair. For some hair types moisture is lost from the cortex which can make the hair fly away, dry and unruly (see image 4). Salon subscribed conditioners use moisture molecules to soften and rejuvenate the hair. The cuticle layer is is designed to protect the cortex. The cuticle looks like fish scales. Everyday the cuticle layer is damaged by simple things like the sun, brushing, tying the hair up etc. We also damage our hair by using heat styling tools and colouring it. This damage breaks and bends these scales, which can grip onto each other (knots in your hair). Salon prescribed conditioners help the cuticle layer by closing the scales down the hair shaft, smoothing the outside making the hair shinier, softer and feeling smooth. It's why your hair is so much easier to comb after it conditioned, there is no broken scales gripping onto each other!!! In quick easy terms conditioners add lost strength and moisture, while protecting the outside layer which makes your hair feel soft and look fabulous. Do you use conditioner?
