25.01.2022 P L A C E N T A the only temporary organ, a multifunctional organ, acting as baby's lungs to supply oxygen, kidneys to filter out waste, and as gastrointestin...al and immune systems by delivering nutrients and antibodies. MATERNAL SIDE: attached to uterine wall FETAL SIDE: connected to baby via umbilical cord The placenta detaches from the inside of the uterus after the baby is born, this leaves behind a wound 6-8 inches in diameter that needs time for healing to ward off infection and hemorrhagingat least 4-6 weeks for the wound to completely heal. One of the many reasons birth givers need lots of rest and community care to recover & heal . **that is an internal wound the size of a dinner plate but does reduce with the contraction of the uterus (involution)** . 25.01.2022 INDUCTIONS FAIL, NOT WOMEN How many times have you heard a woman say ‘I just don’t go into labour’, or ‘I just can’t dilate, but nor did my sister’, or perhaps,... ‘Thank goodness I was in hospital, when they broke my waters, baby arrived so quickly...she would have been born in the taxi if we hadn’t gone there early’ ? I hear it fairly often. I do wish that I didn’t. During Maternal Mental Health Week I just want to pass over a small nugget of information to all of you who might encounter Induction of Labour and whose experience with it was not all positive. Inductions fail, not women. Inductions fail, not women. (Just repeating for the folks in the back row) Your body is complex. Perfectly designed but complex. Labour is a delicate dance between both your baby’s needs and your own. An intertwining of hormones creating the journey of labour into birth. It is complex. It is clever and it is beautiful. Induction of labour, whether hugely necessary or not is a blunt instrument. It does not take into account individuality. It does not engage with emotion. It does not care for preparedness or history. As Mary Cronk cleverly stated: Imagine that labour, with all its different factors, like hormones and muscles and so on, is like a synchronised swimming team. It all works really beautifully together. But induction of labour? That is like throwing one of the swimmers in the pool and hoping the rest jump in! Inducing labour is a complex process that may work for some and may not work for others. But because this forcing of labour didn’t work for you or your baby does not reflect on you but the process itself. You were never faulty. Your hopes and dreams for your birth were never ‘too much’. The very process failed you. Of course I am not saying that IOL is wrong for everyone, or to take away that choice. But if your post-dates induced labour did not progress well, if you were faced with a cascade of interventions, YOU did not fail. The process failed you. Photo courtesy of @mommingwithtruth

23.01.2022 For the May Gibbs fans. I love her stories and illustrations because they remind me of my childhood. My kids love May Gibbs books because they love any book with bums in them.
23.01.2022 My absolute favourite breastfeeding position, especially in those early days when you and bub are still working things out. It's easier to relax and release tension in your body if you can lie down, which will in turn promotes oxytocin, which is what we need to "let down" the milk into the milk ducts for your baby to access. instagram.com/fleurlisepalue

14.01.2022 There is a common belief spread on the internet that recommends to just "take a few deep breathes" when you're stressed or feeling triggered. Have you tried it?... Did it work? Did it suddenly make you feel relaxed and peaceful? Probably not. That's normal, there is nothing wrong with you. I've had many mums telling me that it doesn't work for them either! And there is a scientific reason behind that: When we take a a few big breathes, we're activating the sympathetic branch of the nervous system. It is the branch responsible for the "fight or flight" response. In other words, taking big (inhale) breathes ACCELERATES our heart beat and breathing, putting our system into a survival response, getting us MORE activated. This is the opposite of what we want! If we're stressed or triggered, we're _already_ in a survival response. . . What we need is to help our system slow down and come out of this survival response. Only then will we feel calmer. How can we help our system slow down? By stimulating the Para-Sympathetic branch of your nervous system. How do we do that? There are many different ways to do this. But when it comes to breathing, what helps our system slow down is a LONG SLOW EXHALE. A long slow exhale like the "Om" we do at yoga, Or like if you'd blow on a candle to make the flame dance a little, for a few seconds. Or when you're singing too! A ... long... slow... exhale... To summarise, when you're stressed, or triggered: Notice your breathe. Take a normal breathe in. And have a LONG SLOW EXHALE. Let your body naturally take another breathe in... And have another LONG SLOW EXHALE. . . And as your breathe slows down and you feel your body softening, take the time to open your vision field, to look around you, as a way to help your system connect with the "here and now." Looking around in this way is called "orienting" and that too can help your system come out of its survival response. 13.01.2022 Dearest Mama, Thank you for giving me your milk, it was my favourite thing. I loved to be near you, I felt calm and safe and happy.... I loved when you stroked my face and we looked at each other for hours. I’m sorry sometimes I was a bit pinchy, or would fidget, I didn’t mean to hurt you, it’s just that your milk was so magical it made me sleepy. The dreams I had that started with your milk were the sweetest. Thank you for stopping your world to feed me, I’m so little that I won’t really remember, but I hope that you do, for always x . 09.01.2022 ''All the eggs a woman will ever carry form in her ovaries while she is a four month old fetus in the womb of her mother. This means our cellular life as an egg... begins in the womb of our grandmother. Each of us spent five months in our grandmother's womb, and she in turn formed in the womb of her grandmother. We vibrate to the rhythm of our mother's blood before she herself is born, and this pulse is the thread of blood that runs all the way back through the grandmothers to the first mother.'' ~ Layne Redmond, When The Drummers Were Women Mara Berendt Friedman New Moon Visions Sacred Art

08.01.2022 The BEST bit of advice I ever received before giving birth was an almost throw away comment about 'The Ring of Fire'. It didn't make much sense at the time, as ...I was expecting my first baby. The comment was something along the lines of: If you feel the Ring of Fire, don't push. Just breathe through it. When my time came, I was blissed out in the bath, my body was pushing. Then I thought to myself "it is burning". BURNING! FIRE! RING OF FIRE! BREEEEEEEATHEEEEE. I actively prevented the pushing, and just breathed. The burning passed. And on we went, a baby born on the next contraction. AWESOME. No tearing. The burning, or stinging, felt at this point is the body's way of saying 'slow down, I am not quite stretched enough'. By panting or breathing through the burning contraction, you give your body more stretching time. Your body adjusts to make room, and you can move on. Working with your body, not against it. So to avoid tearing here is a bit of sage advice: If you 'breathe your baby down', this can help. As can waterbirth. Warm compresses on your perineum, if you are comfortable with that. Stay off your back! (upright positions help open your pelvis) If you feel the 'ring of fire', a burning like sensation, don't push. Pant, breathe, slow down. When it passes, with the next contraction, push. Only bear down on contractions that don't 'burn'. Of course, sometimes, our bodies just do it, and we can't control it so much. I have seen some awesome warrior birthers, who do tend to tear, because they push through. I have seen others do the breathing down, and not tear...even with a near 5kg baby! Interestingly, it doesn't seem to take longer. A bit like weaving through traffic. If you rush, you really only use more fuel and wear (and tear) on your car, if you relax and take your time you save fuel and energy, arrive more relaxed. Often both cars arrive at the destination very close together. This post appears at https://www.bellabirth.org/b/birthing-with-the-ring-of-fire
08.01.2022 This is absolutely outrageous, please sign the petition. "Earlier this week, the Australian College of Midwives (ACM) became aware that some hospitals have commenced disallowing water immersion or showers for labouring women. This appears to be in response to a recommendation made by SAFER CARE VICTORIA AND RANZCOG that suggests that water immersion should be suspended for all women in COVID-19 hotspots, including women who have not contracted the virus. Unfortunately, these recommendations do not appear to be based on clinical evidence nor do they demonstrate that banning water immersion and showering will help reduce the risk of transmission of COVID-19."

08.01.2022 S H I T H A P P E N S No we aren’t talking about the birthing person in labour, we’re actually talking about your baby’s first bowel movement. Meconium is ...rather common in longer labour’s or with babies of longer gestation, but it doesn’t necessarily mean a medical emergency. My gorgeous girl was born covered in poop after a rather long labour but we had the monitor on when I finally got to hospital and she stayed strong the entire time and once ready to go, she made her entrance into the world in just a few pushes... Informative Repost and words by @georgiejhet #Repost @friscowomenshealth Meconium happens, but do you know what it is? Babies do not eat food in the womb, so meconium is made up of other materials that are ingested during fetal growth - intestinal epithelial cells, lanugo (hair), mucus, amniotic fluid, bile and water. While meconium is not technically the same as poop, it is considered baby's first bowel movement and is present in the stool for a few days after birth. . . . @jessica_vi_photography . 06.01.2022 We have the evidence, let’s shout it from the rooftops so that both parents and practitioners can make the best informed choice for families! Preterm-born c...hildren are at higher risk for more developmental needs and delays when compared to full-term peers. Inaccurate understanding of bilingualism leads many to abandon their home language to help the child! But research is suggesting otherwise so our decisions and recommendations should be otherwise. September is NICU awareness month - Would you please help spread this information, whether via social media or by word of mouth!? The more of us who know it, the better chance these kiddos and families will have of sustaining family languages Thank you to these researchers for advancing our evidence that bilingualism is beneficial and not harmful EVEN for those at higher risk or with delays and disabilities: Baralt, M., & Mahoney, A. 06.01.2022 Dates have been used around the world for centuries as a natural approach to preparation for labor. Several studies now support their effectiveness. Though we d...on’t know exactly why, they do have an impact on the start and progress of labor - likely due to an impact on the hormone oxytocin which helps labor start and progress effectively. A 2011 study found that women who ate dates starting at 36 weeks were: Significantly more dilated when they got to the hospital Had a significantly higher rate of intact membranes Were significantly more likely to go into labor spontaneously (i.e. without induction) And had nearly half the length of first stage of labor A 2014 study found that women who ate dates from 37 weeks on had: Greater cervical dilatation at admission Higher success rates of labor induction when needed A 2017 study concluded that all the above was accurate and yet another study found that eating dates in pregnancy led to less bleeding immediately after birth. Any type of dates work! The ‘dose’ is about 2.5 ounces of dates ( ~6 to 8 small dates or ~4 larger dates) daily, starting at 36 or 37 weeks and until labor begins. I love eating them plain, but you can include them in my herbal bliss bites (recipe on my IGTV), use them to sweeten cashew or almond milk, or include them chopped in yogurt or oatmeal. Amazingly, they also haven’t been shown to be a problem for blood sugar. Did you use dates to prep for your labor? Do you know a pregnant mama who is prepping for labor? 01.01.2022 This refers to people who have just given birth and have been given a shot of Pitocin or Syntocinon in AU/ NZ (the names for synthetic oxytocin) to assist with the birth of their placenta. So feel confident to decline if this massage is offered. It can be incredibly uncomfortable at a time you need to focus on bonding with your baby, not to mention unnecessary. The evidence does not support this practice. "The uterine massage in addition to synthetic oxytocin did not reduce blood loss compared to synthetic oxytocin alone."
