25.01.2022 Thank you to the Anglican Church Grammar School for inviting me to teach at their Junior School this morning - about mindfulness and wellbeing. It was exciting to make the connection to their current unit of inquiry and receive many engaging questions. #wellbeing #mindfulness #education #performance #mindtraining #curriculum #teaching #mentalhealth #focus #selfregulation #resilience #registered

21.01.2022 This week at #ZenEd, we used the theme of self-enquiry to guide the mindfulness classes with adults and children. There are many benefits of an inquiry-based teaching/learning model which is now being adopted by many schools and education organisations increased motivation, creativity, innovation, curiosity, critical thinking, self-awareness, empathy for others etc. However, I can guarantee, the depth of inquiry will be limited if the students arent able to focus, self-...regulate in a highly stimulating environment like schools & other workplaces. Focus & emotional self-regulation can be trained (through mindfulness training) and it needs to be taught alongside an inquiry-based teaching/learning model it is a necessity.

14.01.2022 Teaching a mindfulness curricular program at Moreton Bay College during term 4. Like any other subject, mindfulness needs to be taught explicitly using a wide range of learning experiences to accomodate student needs. Mindfulness activities can be both formal and informal - increasing focus, self-regulation and performance. At the conclusion of the program, 86% of the participants responded that all students at MBC should be learning mindfulness. #innovative #mindfulness #focus #selfregulation #academicperformance #growthmindset #emotionalintelligence #wellbeing
14.01.2022 Mr Miyagi meets the school classroom Growing up, one of my favourite movies was the karate kid. I watched it several times. After the movie, I would take down the sleeping bag from the cupboard, tie it up like a punching bag and proceed to enthusiastically execute untrained karate manoeuvres. Mr Miyagi won an Academy award for this performance and it was difficult not to love his role as the teacher/mentor. His approach was innovative, creative and supportive. He used a varie...ty of age-appropriate learning experiences e.g. paint the fence, wax on/off etc to engage Daniel LaRusso and ultimately, teach him skills he could use when faced with the inevitable life challenges. Ive worked with many inspiring teachers who have adapted similar qualities as Mr Miyagi. After 20 years experience as a registered teacher and mindfulness teacher, I have no doubt that all kids can benefit from a school mindfulness curriculum - which helps regulate attention, emotions, resiliency and the cultivation of positive mindsets. However, whether you are a karate kid or just a regular kid, like any subject in the curriculum, mindfulness needs to be practised regularly and taught explicitly. The recent global pandemic has reinforced that Apps & Videos are great for support, but it will never replace an experienced and trained teacher. Are students at your school or University being engaged in a mindfulness curriculum that is age-appropriate, regularly practised and explicitly taught by a registered teacher and mindfulness teacher. Or are the students just punching a sleeping bag?

13.01.2022 After weeks of zoom classes it has been great to be back in the classroom working with innovative schools and staff teaching my mindfulness curriculum that supports existing social-emotional learning programs. Photo: St Paul's School "Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) programs differ from those of mindfulness-based programs in an important and fundamental way. ... SEL programs teach skills from the outside in. That is, students learn through psychoeducation, behavioral skills, and a positive school environment to self-manage their emotions to reduce risky behaviors and improve academic performance. Alternatively, mindfulness-based approaches teach students from the inside out to cultivate self-management of attention and increase self-awareness by focusing on experiences such as thoughts, emotional states, the breath, and other bodily sensations." 12.01.2022 This week, we used the theme of communication to guide the mindfulness classes with adults and children. We learnt how Mindfulness training can help us be less reactive to uncomfortable emotions (anger, frustration, anxiety etc) , less likely to express ourselves through a fight/flight model and more able to self-regulate and communicate our needs and preferences with clarity and empathy. #selfinquiry #communication #selfregulation #resilience #wellbeing #academicperformance

12.01.2022 Gratefulness Growing up, my father had a best friend. I called him Uncle John. As a teenager, he was a positive male role model in my life funny, caring and intelligent. On the first Sunday of every month, Uncle John and I would enthusiastically wake up before dawn and drive to a different golf course in the greater Brisbane metropolitan area to enjoy some laughs, the great outdoors and 18 holes of golf. Unfortunately, I attended Uncle Johns online funeral yesterday. ... It made me reflect on how grateful I am for his support, friendship and guidance through those formative years. We know through research and experience that a regular mindfulness practise can help us cultivate gratefulness. This can improve our mood, mental health, life satisfaction and even work productivity. Many positive outcomes for schools and the workplace. (Australian Curriculum - Personal and Social Capabilities: Social awareness). But do we need significant life moments to initiate gratefulness? During the last 5 weeks, Ive been teaching & coaching mindfulness to hundreds of students/parents, mostly via Zoom. When we discuss the mindfulness topic of gratefulness, students and parents immediately reflect on how lucky we are to have schools, how much they miss school etc. A regular mindfulness practise has many positive benefits. It can remind us to be grateful of the things in our liveseven before they are taken away.

01.01.2022 I have received approval from the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT) to provide continual professional development (CPD) hrs for teachers who participate in the ZenEd mindfulness curriculum training.
