04.01.2022 What is a Variable Speed Drive What is a Variable Speed Drive or VSD A variable speed drive (VSD) is an item of equipment used to control the speed and torque of an electric motor. The current technology achieves speed control by varying the electrical frequency of the power supplied to a standard type industrial AC motor, so the same equipment is also referred to as a variable frequency drive (VFD), adjustable frequency drive (AFD) or sometimes an adjustable-speed drive (ASD...). What a variable speed drive allows you to do is to match the speed of your motor driven equipment to the requirements of your process. Variable speed drives are frequently seen in applications where control of operating speed is an essential part of the process. Examples include printing machinery and machine tools and many manufacturing processes. Variable speed drives offer significant energy saving possibilities when appropriately applied in applications that need to operate at full capacity for some, but not all of their operating time. Of necessity, the equipment used in these applications needs to be designed for the maximum capacity condition and may be quite wasteful in terms of energy usage when needlessly operating at full speed as will be the case with a fixed speed motor. Fan and pump applications frequently offer excellent payback in terms of energy saved compared to the capital cost of a variable speed drive installation. An example of this would be the fans that are used in car park ventilation systems. During high traffic times of the day, the ventilation fan needs to operate at or near full speed, however during lower traffic periods a lower fan speed is more than adequate to meet air quality requirements. Zener VSDs can be easily equipped to automate this task by monitoring signals from appropriately located gas sensors and automatically controlling the ventilation fan speed to maintain the target air quality. In certain situations there are some quite significant benefits beyond just process control that can be had by installing a VSD. The obvious saving from installing a VSD will be in terms of energy usage and a reduction in your energy bills. Other benefits include increasing the life of your equipment, elimination of stress on the electrical supply system high motor starting currents and reduced maintenance costs.
