22.01.2022 I just had a tragic call from a client with a young wife and 2 kids under 5 - Pancreatic Cancer. Fortunately 2 years ago we set up appropriate insurances for him and he is going to be able to spend quality time with his family in the time remaining to him, pay for his treatment and know that his wife and kids will be OK when hes gone. It doesnt always happen to somebody else.

20.01.2022 Today attended the opening of the wonderful St Brigids Green Retirement and Aged Care facility at Maroubra by the GG Sir Peter Cosgrove and the Archbishop of Sydney Anthony Fisher. What a fantastic facility! It was amusing to hear local Priest Fr Bill Challenor speak of the sites use between the closing of the High School and the building of St Brigids. Turns out when the developers moved in, the abandoned building had been set up as a fully functioning hydroponic cannabis lab!

10.01.2022 Not sure what happened to this post from this afternoon? In December I posted about a client with a young family who had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and given just 12 months to live. The good news is that through careful strategic planning, we were able to increase his after tax insurance benefit by $200,000. The total benefit is enough to pay out their debts and with good Estate planning, ensure a generous, tax effective income for his family for many years to co...me. Unfortunately, the tragic news I received today is that the 12 months he was given in December has now been reduced to just 2 weeks and he has returned home from hospital to spend his remaining time with his young family. Our thoughts are with him and his family as they try, somehow, to deal with this.

03.01.2022 I was privileged last week to be invited to a think tank on the Future of Ageing. Organised by Future Agenda and facilitated by Dr Ken Smith from the Centre of Longevity at Stanford university, we pondered the question of what ageing will look like in 10 and 20 years, not just in Australia, but globally. Other panellists included Dr Ruth Finkelstein from the Columbia Ageing centre in New York, Oliver Freeman the renowned Futurist, and Marnie Meylor from the Mayo Clinic. ... Whilst the issues covered included, changes to employment patterns, urban design, technological delivery of patient care and much more, there was one overriding theme that was agreed by everybody. Tomorrows Seniors will not meekly accept the status quo as did their parents. They will not accept things they are not happy about and they have already proven they are prepared to do something about it. This generation marched for Civil Rights, Gay rights, and Womens rights. They protested to end the Vietnam War and to protect the environment. Projected demographics show that the over 65 voting block will carry more and more power. This generation is technologically enabled to make their voice heard like never before and they will benefit from the greatest inter-generational transfer of wealth the world has ever seen. Businesses catering to these people will do well to heed this change and be prepared to listen to these people and adapt, offering innovative, customised solutions. Those who do not, will do so at their peril.

02.01.2022 I was invited last week to spend a few hours back at Endeavour High, observing and speaking with the kids there that are part of the Clontarf program http://www.clontarf.org.au/. This amazing program that originated in WA is aimed at giving young indigenous men the opportunity to "break the cycle by providing education, life skills and self esteem. The former Endeavour head of Rugby League, Jeff Hardy has brought the program to the school to assist both the indigenous boy...s there on elite sporting programs, local kids and those from the Kirinari Hostel at Sylvania. I was honoured to be asked by Jeff to come on board as a local business supporter and mentor as part of the program. It is immediately obvious that even in the short time the program has been running at the school, these kids have developed a new found sense of confidence and self esteem. Every one of them confidently looks you n the eye and shakes your hand, something you dont often see in 15 year old boys with even a relatively privileged upbringing. Theres no doubt this program is doing great things around the country and its fantastic to see it at Endeavour. One of the great things as a local sponsor is that any donations to the program are effectively matched dollar for dollar by the government and again by big business so youre effectively giving $3 for $1!
