07.01.2022 Shin splints, sore knees, tight hips, strained hamstrings Off-season running is usually where most hockey players develop the injuries that later show up in the season Every athlete requires an individual program and approach to their offseason training! ... Please don’t put the physical and mental stress on yourself of trying to run stupid 3km time trails and 3-5 laps for time. These distances, in the off-season, after weeks or months of rest are only going to increase your chances of developing poor compensation patterns and picking up the usual wear and tear injures! In a field based sport at no point in time during the game are you ever consistently running 3km or 300-700m. Most sports are stop start, change of direction, multiple changes of direction inside 5-10m and most importantly deceleration. Your off-season training should reflect this. There is a time and a place for those longer runs - it’s definitely not in the first 4 weeks back! In the first 4 weeks back our sessions look something like this. Time controlled running followed by some simple strength drills and agility training Movement pattern warm up and muscle activation 100m every min x 4 50m every 30 seconds x 6 25m every 40 seconds x 4 10m sprints x 8 Strength drills Agility drills The emphasis is on movement quality, increasing tissue tolerance and progressively overloading.
