25.01.2022 And now for some mulberrys. #mulberrys #orchard #regenrativeagriculture #ifihadanorchardidworktillimsore #zigzagwines

21.01.2022 It’s going to be so mega hot today we got out early into the vines (still lots to do). There’s nothing quite like getting out early when the earth and air are still cool, and is one of the many things I am grateful about for being here (must remember that when lying in bed not getting out early, I also really really love sleeping). #vineyard #regenerative agriculture #djadjawurrungcountry #zigzagwines #kindfolkwines #macedonrangeswine

21.01.2022 Melbourne friends: last chance to order through the wine fairy for a month!! www.zigzagwines.com.au/winefairy We're switching the rhythm to monthly from fortnightly now restrictions are easing. We can't take any more orders after midnight on Thursday (tonight), so grab some wine (FREE DELIVERY) now if you'd like to be topped up.

21.01.2022 The family is growing. Boy oh boy, we LOVE the new Zig Zag Rd. label which we’re slowly rolling out. This time introducing #pinotnoir - we only made a barrel but it’s out now and honestly it is very very nice, if we say so ourselves. Soon we’ll be releasing our #1972 block Pinot, but she’s not out just yet, only her beautiful label (watch this space). Thank you to the amazing and patient @small.fortunes for collaborating with us and thanks to @clairderwortphotography for the second pic. Categorically not attributing the first slightly duff photo I took to her... #winelabels #cellardoor #zigzagwines #shiraz #sparklingshiraz

17.01.2022 It’s been a good few months since starting on our trials of ducks, chickens, geese and sheep which we are moving through the vineyard cell by cell in an attempt to manage weeds, competition and build the soil (thanks to their glorious poo / scratchings /duck water deposits). . Pros: - Lovely to have animals doing their animal thing around (ducks especially, and our two original geese zig and zag with their amusing feather display) - Working in collaboration with De who is a... chicken and bird whisperer as part of this new micro-enterprise on the farm. She’s the most solutions-orientated lady in town. - assuming from what we can see so far (but not yet tested fully) all this scratching and pooing and grazing is doing a stellar job. Cons - they get out all the blooming time. I can’t believe I don’t have a photo of Henry swearing or pulling his daily just-get-the -**** back-into-the-penned-area-face, and my slightly miffed face in the sheep pic doesn’t capture the frustration we’ve felt at the endless sheep / bird haranguing that we’ve had to do to get them to stay in their penned in area. But they seem to have learned it now, as have we, mostly, and we weren’t under any illusion it wouldn’t take some learning. - Still got loads of tricky logistical bits to resolve before we scale up to getting BABY DOLL SHEEP to join the gang (watch this space, and then watch to see what new joys [challenges] they bring...!)(we are aware of the risks!) . And Henry deserves an enormous medal for his patience in setting up the whole thing along with De including the portable electric fence. (Seemingly no pics of them but they have done all the work). . Think we are finally getting there in terms of more quickly rolling it out when it needs to move but my patience levels at 38 weeks pregnant for escapee geese and other woolly friends is waning! . 13.01.2022 Having a midlife crisis? So is Henry (bought a motorbike and listens to 90's dance music in the vineyard). You can get through this with THE WINE FAIRY. Coming to Melbourne this Saturday.... www.zigzagwines.com.au/winefairy

13.01.2022 This is a celebration after pruning the final 7000th vine from a few days ago. Phew-y. We are months later than most, possibly everyone else has long finished, but between Henry, Stuart, Sarah and I we have got there. . It took so long for a reason though. Last year we got frosted very badly very late in the season which basically stuffed us in some parts of the vineyard. When vines get frosted they can throw out a whole host of new canes (we’ve learnt) in a great panic to p...roduce fruit (which they didn’t) and so it took an age to prune back all the crazed canes on each beautiful but gnarly vine planted nearly 50 years ago. Amazing grapes but means we have to go a little slower to put in the love and care. . We were also fairly slow because we wanted to prune each vine ourselves or within our small team as we’re still getting to know the vineyard since we took over it’s stewardship. So now we have 7000 babies that we know intimately. It was worth the winter and spring slog - and then we had to make sure we were doing all the spring work at the same time. Oofff. But very satisfying. And now a mini party. . #pruningvines #pinotnoir #shiraz #riesling #cabernetsauvignon #merlot #1972 See more

10.01.2022 It might not look especially pretty (and I’m making a right mess in the kitchen) but we are boiling up a load of the nettles we dried over winter to make a nettle tea. We’ll spray it this afternoon on the vines now that leaves have grown to the right length. Nettle tea is a super ‘weed’ that seems to be both good for us and the vines, and should help with resistance to disease and pests, and with all that glorious and glamorous photosynthesising that needs to go on in the coming days. TBC results, will keep you posted. Thanks to @maisonlapalus for the recipe and guidance. #nettletea #regenerativeagriculture #zigzagwines #pinotnoir #riesling #shiraz #cabernetsauvignon #merlot

07.01.2022 Very very excited to be at the @malmsburyfm today alongside the gorgeous Carolina and Jess from @zigzagrdgrowers HURRUH. It was their first market stand today, launching their BRAND NEW market garden which they’ve started on our farm at Zig Zag Rd. . They’ve both got loads of experience and have been growing nutritious food in abundance for donkeys so we are thrilled we are now in this little collaboration with them. For us it’s the best thing ever to share this place with t...hem - and is the first of a few enterprises we’d love to have on the farm, as part of our vision of sharing resources and land freely for the benefit of the wider community with likeminded folk. Plus all of the yummy soil life forms that will gather under their veggies will hang out with those under the vines so that is ace. We are so so thrilled and wish them every success. . Watch this space as we’ve got lots of ideas we want to try out together. #marketgarden #djadjawurrungcountry #regenerativefarming #permaculture #sharingresources #golocal #supportlocal #zigzagwines See more

04.01.2022 Lovely weather for... ducklings! . This is the formal introduction to the ducklings who, we hope, will form part of the chicken, goose and duck posse to help us on our regenerative farming journey with the vineyard (gobbling insects, scratching up a little soil and fertilising here and there). They have hatched under the careful eye of Malmsbury feathered-friend-expert De Chantel Hillis, who is doing a little collaboration with us. And we get them when they’re ready in a few ...weeks. . We will happily record what went wrong during this whole attempt (bracing for the worst, planning for the best) BUT in this first introduction to ducks, we present to you some VERY cute little ducklings. And we hope they bring some spring joy to your evening. They brought joy to all of us on the day they came to visit - including Alby until he told us, ‘I want to tip them out of my wheelbarrow’. . And we recently upgraded the tables on our cellar door deck for folk to enjoy whilst sipping vino, and these ducklings just seemed the best way to showcase them... (this photo was taken seconds before a surprising amount of duckling poo was deposited). . We will keep you posted. #ducksofinstagram #regenerativeagriculture #cellardoorview #cellardoor #zigzagwines See more

03.01.2022 Really encourage watching this powerful video and hearing this call for Treaty and Truth Telling for Healing Country. 02.01.2022 Okay well after a six week hiatus of non-engagement with Instagram here a couple of little posts. Sorry to that (small number) who have noticed that I have been more reluctant to post or logon even than usual. And sorry those who’ve messaged us, or kindly mentioned us and had radio silence as their response. Or to those we follow whose posts have gone unloved. We love you, more than a red heart could say. ... No real reason for it, certainly nothing as worthy as Intentionally Disengaging from social media. I just wasn’t feeling it, have been navigating, as everyone has, a wave of amusing illnesses like gastro and colds, went into a post-vintage slump about all that needs to be done, and have been trying to balance strong nesting instincts with surrendering to the fact that mice nightly poo in the cupboards I’ve just scrubbed in a bid to feel more in control. . So you’ll see a flurry of flashbacks here, amongst other posts, possibly, (no commitment) and then probably another silence as we press into those last sacred moments ahead of the birth. . I hope lockdown is being kind to you, that love and hope surround you, and we will see you soon. . (Pics of last of the autumn riot) #ohinstagram #autumn #macedonranges

02.01.2022 Being not massively encouraged to do heavy lifting at 32 weeks, we are 100% reliant on our legendary team this year for the real work. Yesterday saw Sarah and @pieholcombe destemming with Henry our #1972 #shiraz whist between the four of us we watched the press for the #pinotnoir - thanks so much you wonder birds. I’m only allowed on the forklift. Henry rewarded Sarah here by pouring the surplus of a bucket all over her by accident. She took it well. #zigzagwines #v21

01.01.2022 We just wanted to say Happy New Year and thank you to everyone of you Kind Folk who helped us and all small businesses through last year. Every small act of kindness and generosity and support (including all those who supported us through buying vino or local produce) just meant the absolute world to us. Here’s to a healthy, joy-filled, and peaceful-hearted 2021 in every possible way and here’s to all of you who are especially happy to say farewell to 2020. Thank you #gratitude #2021 #supportlocal #macedonrangeswine #kindfolkwines #zigzagwines
