23.01.2022 I am sure many would be familiar with the curse of the black poly pipe. It comes in all lengths and sizes and all of them are the devil. Its a wonderful invent...ion until you have to fix it. Some of my best early childhood memories are of holding the torch in the pitch black with my father haunched over a hand dug trench trying to fit a joiner to an old poly line that had decided to let go at the most inconvenient time and in the most inconvenient location. Ive had the misfortune of having to do battle with the cursed stuff myself on occasion. It tests the mind, body and soul. I had a run in with it this afternoon and it was a battle to the death. I won this round but I know that it lies in wait and will reappear when I least expect it. This poem is to all those who have danced the dance with the dreaded black poly. The dreaded black poly It was a quiet and relaxing afternoon As I was quietly mowing my lawn When I saw an ominous wet spot appear The house water line must have been worn Now this wasnt the first occasion Or the first repair Id had to undertake Of locating a leaky section of black poly pipe Which ran only 100 meters from our front gate In fact the short length of poly line Had more joiners than pipe itself Too dear to just replace the length Id always manage to convince myself So I found my pick and shovel A box of joiners, zip ties and bailing twine And headed out with confidence To fix that dreaded black poly line The digging was quite easy It had been leaking for quite a while When I hit the pipe and found the leak I broke into a smile I neatly cut out the split bit of pipe Fitted the joiner, slipped on the end guard I thought to myself I was pretty handy This plumbing game isnt all that hard But just as I was tightening the ends I spotted another leak Only 10 meters down from where I sat My prospects of an early beer were looking bleak So I dug up another section 20 cubic meters of the excavation to find the spot It was a T-piece with a maze of pipe All different sizes and ends to add to the rot There was 2 inch into an inch and a quarter 1 inch into 1 inch and a half There were pipelines that ran to nowhere Their exact location was hard to graph And the leaks just kept on springing Like the poly decided to let go all at once There was water spraying everywhere Me just the tired and muddy wet dunce But I dug and cut and joined and pulled I cursed and swore and frowned By the time I fixed all the leaks and joins There was more pipe dug up than in the ground And then it came to the final leak I was covered in mud and blood and sweat Id be buggered if Id let this poly beat me Id get there even bet And finally I cut that last piece of poly Added my last join with a weary snort But then to my shock and horror Id cut the poly half an inch bloody short! I threw my hands up in the air I laid back in the mud This poly had finally beaten me I threw the stilsons down with a fearsome thud I trudged back to the homestead I was beaten and wet and sore I rang my stock and station agent I cursed and raged and swore I dont care about the cost or charge I dont care what you invoice or bill I just want the best and thickest poly you stock In fact a steel pipe would be better still! In half a day the new line was dug and lay I pulled out the old line with hate and spite I cut out all the old joiners Id used They were stacked up 6 foot in height The contractor gave me a knowing smile As he finally connected the water line Mate Ill give you a 50% discount For all those joiners youve stacked up like a shrine I looked at the old poly joiners assembled They still made my blood rush hard and hot You can have the bloody things I said And any other of the bastards Ive got! And sometimes when I walk into the shed And see a roll of black poly coiled on the wall I say a little curse to myself As my skin begins to crawl. In fact Id rather see a brown snake A red back spider would be a treat That cursed bloody black poly pipe Always makes my pulse race and heart skip a beat
