24.01.2022 Snakes Close to 6,500 pets are bitten by snakes each year in Australia and a venomous snake bite is a life-threatening emergency. With the weather warming up, snakes are becoming more active or "on the move", as we say, we need to be careful and safeguard our dogs from snake bite. We can come across them anywhere in Australia, from suburbia to rural areas. At the beginning of summer, snakes' venom glands are full and their bites are much more severe, the length of time since ...Continue reading

17.01.2022 Dog theft in Australia is on the rise. As instances of dog napping continue to grow, it’s important that dog owners take more precautions so they aren’t becoming victims of this frightful trend. When Fido disappears, sometimes it’s hard to tell if they simply ran off or were taken by a criminal depending upon the circumstances. In either case, pet lovers should be extra vigilant so their precious pooch doesn’t go missing. There’s obvious preventative measures, the proper iden...Continue reading

Don't forget to arrange where your Furbaby will be staying if they can't go with you. 06.01.2022 November is Pet Dental Health Month. And that means it's the perfect time to check on your pooch's smile. Although the fur kids aren’t typically known to have minty-fresh breath, an extremely foul odour can be the first sign of severe dental problems. Here are some handy hints to identify common dental issues and how to prevent them. It can be hard to tell if your pet has a toothache. Dogs have the tendency to not show pain, and often owners miss the signs. Some common signs... that may indicate something is wrong with your pet's teeth apart from bad breath, include: Drooling, Loss of appetite or inability to eat, Pawing at the mouth, Mouth hanging open/tongue out, Using one side of the mouth, Dropping food while chewing, Build-up of plaque and stains on teeth & Red swollen/bleeding gums. If your pet is showing any of these signs, make an appointment with your vet today. Annual health checks are an ideal opportunity for pawrents to find out if their pet has existing dental problems that may have gone unnoticed. Tips on keeping Fido's mouth healthy, in the wild dog's, didn't get dental sticks or daily toothbrush cleaning, they cleaned their teeth by eating the bones in the carcass of their prey. Bones are still a great way of keeping their mouths healthy, some say dogs shouldn't be given bones due to teeth breakages and blockages. HOWEVER, it is the right sort of bones that is the answer. Many give them the long bones from a cow, these are the WRONG bones to give our fur kids, they are too hard which leads to possible molar teeth breakage and if your dog is a constant gnawer these bones can contribute to blockages. On the other hand, softer bones like chicken frames, wings & necks, ribs, rabbit carcass, roo tail, pig ears etc do clean the teeth and massage the gums as it is the ripping and tearing action that is the cleaning factor. A lot of commercial dog food companies now produce supposedly dental cleaning products eg dental sticks and claim they clean teeth. Unfortunately, as these products are made from cereal and cereal goes soft and mushy it actually sticks to the teeth, then bacteria multiply because of the stuck-on food, this is how gum disease and other dental problems occur not solving them. Dog's can require the occasional teeth clean by the vet to help keep their mouth in top condition, a daily bone will certainly keep that procedure down to a minimum and the fewer times our furkids require general anesthetic the better it is for them. 03.01.2022 Shake, Shake, Shake, Shake your Bootie! Ever wondered why your pooch loves to have a shake and if there were any benefits to this action? According to different studies, wet dogs are able to remove 70% of the water from their coat with just a shake. If dogs couldn’t shake off to dry, they would lose an awful lot of body heat. According to other studies, wet dogs can increase or decrease the speed of shaking. Shaking frequency is according to the size of the dog. The smaller t...he dog, the greater the number of shakes needed to dry off, large dogs move their body 4 times per second, but small dogs shake 6 times per second or even more. Dogs also shake to release tensions. For example, dogs might shake after having a very tense moment with another dog. Also, they may shake after an intense hug from you. Don’t worry! Shaking after something intense is just their way of returning to their normal state. When a dog shakes it can last between three to four seconds. Other times dogs shake apart from drying off is when they wake up. Keep in mind that before living with humans, wild dogs used to sleep on the ground, where bugs, fleas, and other animals might have crawled on them. For this reason, shaking just after waking up is a way to get rid of all from their fur. Did you know when our pooch's shake it off they are actually reducing their pulse rate? In studies it was shown all dogs shook their bodies during five minute walks and did so when their pulse rate was high. Shaking it off reduced their pulse rate. If the walk was incressed to 15 minutes 80% of dogs had a shake either during or after the walks. They shook more frequently on a long leash compared to off leash or a short leash. The average decrease of the pulse rate was 12%. This is a fascinating finding! Without it, it would likely never occur to most of us with dogs that those full body shakes we’re so used to seeing actually trigger a beneficial physiological response in our furry companions! As we can see, shaking is actually a survival instinct. See more

01.01.2022 Simply add eggs! Dogs in the wild, in particular, scavenge birds' nests for eggs and consume them raw with the shells included. This habit lives on in domesticated dogs, and many pawrents feed eggs to their dogs, either raw or cooked. There are many health benefits from eggs because of the many nutrients such as healthy fats. A high dosage of omega-3 fatty acids can help in the management of pruritic skin disease, as well as the management of inflammatory conditions in dogs. ...Continue reading
