18.01.2022 Equestriad Over the weekend I competed with Frankie and Snow at Equestriad. This was my first time eventing since 2018 it’s been a minute . Both girls trie...d their little hearts out for me. Frankie still has many issues to work through so did not go so well in the dressage but was definitely more at home in the showjumping arena! I withdrew her before cross country as I felt she was quite fatigued and didn’t want her to have a bad experience. Snow did a respectable dressage test but we were just a little slow in cross country and accumulated quite a few penalties here. We’ll be faster next time . We then finished the weekend with a clear showjumping round! All in all I had a really great weekend and have come away knowing what each mare needs to work on! Looking forward to the next one! (Have I become an eventer? ) See more

17.01.2022 As some of you might know but a lot of you probably aren’t aware that mum and I are no long at the beautiful Kedron Homestead. After 6 years we were informed that the owner of the property wanted move back in. Mum left in November of last year, having the huge task of packing up the entire property on her own while I was in Japan. While we were obviously sad to be ending that particular chapter of our lives mum has down sized to a smaller property that is closer to her parent...s. She was understandably exhausted after trying to run the property by herself while I was gone and is enjoying only having her own horses to care for! This year I have been holding out hope that overseas travel will be possible soon. Unfortunately that’s looking further and further away into the future. So it’s time to settle down and find somewhere new to call home and base my training business from. Over the years we have helped countless horses and humans on their journeys together at Kedron Equestrian and although I can still do that as a traveling coach and trainer I spend much more time in the car than I do on the horse! I feel it’s time to flip that and start spending more time on the horse than in the car I am writing this post because I have been searching for the perfect property for lease for months now with absolutely no luck!! I am hoping someone out there may know of a property that is available that possibly is offered privately or is not readily available to find online for some reason! I am looking for something that is hard to find I know! Ideally would like 10+ acres, equestrian facilities of some description and with a decent house around the Southwest region of Sydney (Campbelltown, Menangle, Cobbitty, Camden, The Oaks, Oakdale, Wilton, Appin and surrounds). Happy to put in a bit of elbow grease if the property is a little run down. Realistic healthy budget for the right property! Please message the page if you know of anything! See more

17.01.2022 "The trainer will always do well to remember in the morning, before getting on his horse, how and to what extent this horse fulfilled the demands the day before.... Then he will wisely refrain from exaggerating his demands of the day. If his horse surprised him the day before by exceeding his expectations, he should not think that this unexpected progress is already confirmed from now on. After such a stroke of luck, he has to avoid trying to continue today where he left off after yesterdays good lesson he would only be disappointed." 10.01.2022 On this rainy evening I thought we might talk about the importance of stretchy work! One thing every horse I ride is guaranteed to be able to do is stretch in the walk, trot and canter. I use it for the warmup, stretching after the workout, as a reward after harder/ more collected work, relaxation and building strength over the horses back. It really is so important! I credit the work I do within the stretchy trot and canter with why my horses are so light in the hand to ri...de. If done correctly the horse will engage its tummy muscles and lift over the back, which is why it is a perfect warmup exercise. If you’re horse is particularly weak over the back and tucking BTV lots of transitions up and down the paces and within each pace while stretching over the back will help to strengthen it. In my opinion a horse who is behind the vertical is weak and maybe not ready for the level of collection that is being asked of them. I also find that when I take my horses to new environments and they are worried and tense as soon as we start our relaxed stretching work they calm and settle almost straight away! There is so much more I’d like to say about how wonderful stretchy work is! I might have to make a video on it! What’s your opinion on this? Do you do any stretching work with your horse? See more

08.01.2022 A very impressive looking standardbred that has had many hours of dressage training with me. Would absolutely clean up in the standardbred ring!

08.01.2022 My first competition in Japan

07.01.2022 I battle with this often, I think we all do!

07.01.2022 Some of my best thinking is definitely done cleaning stables!

07.01.2022 Ok. A "good" correct example of a horse in piaffe. True collection is a lowering of the horse's hindquarters to carry more weight - not pulling the horse's head... in to make its neck look round. Too often riders equate collection with "going slower" which is incorrect. It's an increased loading of the hindquarters through lowering, which takes time, strength, and correct development...not whacking the horse on the cannon bones with a pole to get it to snap the front end higher than the rear end. This is a lovely photo showing correct collection, a relaxed horse, lowered angle in the haunches, horse's head in front of vertical, no severe pulling on the curb rein, rider in balanced position, parallel limbs, tail relaxed. It's terribly difficult to find correct examples, and way too easy to find bad ones... See more

06.01.2022 Let’s talk about contact! I believe that ever rider has their own individual understanding of what contact means and feels like to them. A lot of a person’s interpretation has to do with whether they follow classical or modern dressage teachings. For me, I’m aiming to have absolute harmony with my horse. I want to dance with them. So I’m looking for the lightest contact possible. I want my horse holding themselves in self carriage, not relying on my hands to hold them up. N...o matter how big they are! I have had lessons though where I have been told to find a ‘stronger’ contact, that this ‘pull’ in the reins is what I need and should be looking for. I would disagree! Just because my horses are light does not mean I am unable to use my reins to communicate and help them. Instead of being forceful and heavy to get a message through I can literally just use my fingers or a squeeze of my shoulders and they understand. It is a delicate and beautiful language between us! I have ridden so many horses that have absolutely no idea of self carriage and only know how to work in the all to common ‘kick and pull back’ way of riding. It’s not fun for the horse and most definitely not fun for me. These horses have become dull from their riders interpreting ‘consistent contact’ as simply locking and holding onto their mouths. If you want to create softness you have to be soft! Pretty simple Remember this; if your arms are hurting after your ride, you are doing it wrong my friend!! If this is you, next time you ride forget the notion of kicking the horse into a pulling hand. Instead concentrate on the body, is your horse supple in each direction, my guess probably not. Are they engaging their stomach muscles? Are they happily moving forward in front of the leg? Are they relaxed? This is where true and honest connection actually comes from, not from your horse’s mouth. But this is just my opinion I’m no Grand Prix rider or judge. It is something to think about though

04.01.2022 "Remember, the conversation between you and your horse must never be dull or inert. It should be, "Ask, receive, give. Ask, receive, give." Ask with your body a...nd legs; receive through your body into your hands; give primarily with the hands, but also with your body and legs, so that you can ask all over again, receive again and give again. The give is your thanks. If you don't give, you must ask harder the next time, and even harder after that, until you end up with a dead or resistant horse." - Sally Swift See more

04.01.2022 Camden Dressage 3 horses, 5 tests over 3 levels Alahambra Milk and Honey 2nd in the prep A on 72% 3rd in the 1B on 65% with an impressive 25 people in th...e class! This was only my 5th ride on this mare so I was over the moon to achieve these scores! She’s not exactly an easy ride on the flat. TK Second Chance 2nd in the 1A pony division on 60% 1st in the 1B pony division on 65%. This was Snip’s first time in the preliminary classes and he put in a great effort, despite me feeling like we could have been a little more harmonious. Walkenny Park Romany Romance 1st in the 2B pony division on 62%. Harley sadly didn’t make it to his first test but did a great job for his first run through of the novice 2B! We were also feeling a little off as a partnership but still managed a respectable score. See more

03.01.2022 Dont let all of this rain stop you from getting your weekly lesson or training ride!

02.01.2022 Main Goal of Training "The language of the aids must be the simplest for the understanding ..... Release the hand and the leg leaving the horse as free as poss...ible as long as he maintains the correct position, gait and speed. This is proof that the horse is truly in balance. Balance is the goal to seek." Beudant Photo Jean Claude Racinet

02.01.2022 Apollo If anyone is needing their horse or pony worked at this point I am still able to continue! This could change at any point so make sure you get in quick!

02.01.2022 I thought I would start #trainingtiptuesdays up again! This quote by classical dressage master Alois Podhajsky is something every rider should remember while training. When we get frustrated and emotional we usually stop using our brains to logically think about the problem at hand and why it is occurring. There will always be a reason and its the job of the rider to find the answer!
