17.01.2022 UNE scientists step up as STEM coaches to smash gender stereotypes February 11th marks the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a day celebrating ...the involvement and achievements of women and girls in science. While many women are leading the way in innovation and discovery, there are long-standing biases and gender stereotypes that are steering girls and women away from science related fields, resulting in a significant gender imbalance across many areas of science. Smashing those stereotypes and overcoming gender bias is no easy task but it’s a challenge that a group of scientists from the University of New England are taking on, by becoming STEM coaches to a group of high school girls with an interest in pursuing science careers. Curious Minds is a 6 month mentoring program for girls in STEM, delivered jointly by Australian Science Innovations and the Australian Mathematics Trust. The program is aimed at high achieving girls in years 9 and 10, who have a keen interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Each year the program pairs students with female coaches who are working in STEM fields, and aims to help the students construct personal goals, grow in confidence and ability, expand their critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and build scientific networks. The 2021 Curious Minds program kicked off in December, and this year six UNE scientists are among the selected coaches. Coming from diverse scientific backgrounds including statistics, palaeontology, biomedical science and animal science, one thing each of these scientists have in common is a passion for mentoring and encouraging girls to pursue careers in STEM. Dr Christine Morton, a lecturer in statistics, has joined Curious Minds for the first time this year. I’m keen to share my passion for science, and career experience, with these girls as a mentor - we need to encourage these budding young scientists to stay in this field she said. The Curious Minds program is particularly targeted towards girls who are from rural or remote areas and Indigenous students, providing these students with an opportunity to connect with working scientists and be exposed to careers that they may not have considered otherwise. One of the things that attracted me to the program was that there was a focus on these under-represented groups of students said Dr Mary McMillan, a Senior Lecturer in Biomedical Science and four-time Curious Minds coach. I come from a rural background myself, and I think it’s vitally important that we provide opportunities such as this to students in these areas, who can often be overlooked. On International Day of Women and Girls in Science, and beyond, these STEM coaches are excited to share their STEM stories and be visible role models for the next generation of scientists. It has already been extremely rewarding inspiring these young women to take on their highest career aspirations said Dr Amy Moss, a UNE post-doctoral fellow in poultry science, who is joining the Curious Minds team for the second year. Reflecting on the coaching experience so far, Christine adds I’ve been really impressed with the interest and commitment shown by the participating students I’ve met so far - they are so appreciative of the opportunity that the Curious Minds program provides for them Completing the UNE STEM coaching team are palaeontologist Dr Marissa Betts, poultry scientist Dr Natalie Morgan, and animal scientist Dr Holland Dougherty - Article by, Dr Mary McMillan Photo 1) Dr Amy Moss. 05.01.2022 Day 4: 16 Days of Activism against gendered violence A number of people we are featuring mention the importance of listening. The Calgary Women’s Shelter has some very practical advice on how you can do this in their publication, Respecting & Listening to Victims of Violence A Handbook for those who are supporting women who have been abused by an intimate partner. https://www.calgarywomensshelter.com//SocialResponses_Hand It’s important to:... Acknowledge the violence. Be clear that the one who perpetrates abuse is the one who is responsible. Honour the victim’s resistance to the violence. Challenge victim-blaming messages the victim has received from others. Allow victims the right to judge their own choices. #ZontaSaysNo #End ChildMarriage #16Days

04.01.2022 HIDDEN TREASURES CELEBRATED ON INTERNATIONAL DAY OF RURAL WOMEN The outstanding contributions that women make to their regional communities have been recognised today, the International Day of Rural Women, with Minister for Agriculture Adam Marshall unveiling the 2020 Hidden Treasures Honour Roll. Mr Marshall said that in a year of unforeseen challenges, women volunteers in rural NSW have selflessly and tirelessly donated their time, and today was an opportunity to celebrate... that. We never could have anticipated what 2020 would bring, but today we are recognising a number of women who have gone above and beyond to the benefit of their communities, said Mr Marshall. The Hidden Treasures Honour Roll is an annual initiative from the NSW Government’s Rural Women’s Network, that tells the stories of women volunteers, and promotes their valuable role to local charities, organisations and businesses. Volunteers are heroes in the bush, and the celebration of these nominees is an important part of ensuring their tireless work is respected. This year 104 women have been recognised by their communities in this important publication, bringing our total nominees to more than 1,000 since the Honour Roll first launched in 2010. Minister for Women Bronnie Taylor thanked the volunteers for their contributions to agriculture, business and community life. As a country woman, I have seen first-hand the way regional women support one another and give their own time so often to improve the lives of others. These awards are a great way of acknowledging these women for their generosity and selflessness in volunteering and helping our communities recover and thrive.
