22.01.2022 Justice Ginsburg worked tirelessly to ensure women’s equal rights under the law. As advocates for gender equality and human rights, our members in the United S...tates and around the world share Justice Ginsburg’s commitment to ensuring equal opportunities for women and girls. 17.01.2022 There’s an obvious trust, ease and respect between driver mentor, Georgie Hutchinson, and her learner, Tash McLean-Lowe, as they reflect on the past three month...s together through Devonport Chaplaincy’s Easy Ps program. The driver training program matches experienced drivers with learners who would not otherwise have the opportunity, means or confidence to learn to drive. Georgie and the other mentors provide a safe space for their mentorees to share their hopes and fears, and ask questions, imparting wisdom and important life skills, as well as teaching their young proteges to drive. Tash, 18, is completing her final year of high school online as a prelude to studying men’s hairdressing (barbering) at TAFE. About a year ago, school counsellors and youth groups I was attending noticed a big change in my physical and mental health, she said. Tash was suffering from anxiety and could no longer live at home. My mental issues also took a hit during COVID. One of the counsellors where Tash lives suggested the Easy P’s program as a means of gaining an important skill and rebuilding her confidence. Georgie, who is a mother of three adult children and a retired schoolteacher, said she felt privileged that Tash felt comfortable enough to share her life. I’m a member of Zonta International which aims to empower women, she said. There is a shortage of women mentors which puts girls like Tash at a disadvantage of being able to get a licence, and this also limits their employment opportunities. Hopefully, with my life experience I can provide some of the empathy and support she needs. Tash said she had found a great friend who has gone through life and can help me to do some things I don’t know how to do. Tash is doing a fabulous job! I’ve noticed that her self-esteem has increased heaps! I also like the way that she is so responsive to advice, responds readily to messages, and is chatty and respectful, Georgie said. 14.01.2022 If, because you’re a man, you think you have the right to be obeyed or to control a woman, then you are a perpetrator of gendered violence.

10.01.2022 Another reflection of our achievements as we draw closer to celebrating 25 years. Zonta has been supporting Orana Respite Centre in East Devonport from 1997 to 2018. The founder of Orana was Norma Jamieson and she was one of our Club’s first guest speakers in April 1996. Norma identified the need for a Respite Centre and it was a very ambitious and worthwhile project.... In 2001 Zonta participated in cooking lunches for the Day Centre, initially once a year and then later twice a year. Our association with Orana was enjoyed by our members.

07.01.2022 Today, July 30 is World Day Against Trafficking in Persons and Zonta International recognises those that are committed to the cause. This year, we are focusing on the first responders to human trafficking. These are the people who work in different sectors - identifying, supporting, counselling and seeking justice for victims of trafficking, and challenging the impunity of the traffickers. During the COVID-19 crisis, the essential role of first responders has become even more... important. Particularly as the restrictions imposed by the pandemic have made their work even more difficult. Still, their contribution is often overlooked and unrecognized.

02.01.2022 Celebrating 25 years of service and advocacy! The Liberty Swing was a project initiated by the School of Special Education, Devonport campus. Members of the Zonta Club of Devonport supported it by contributing over $3000 and successfully applying for a Tasmanian Community Grant valued at $27,000. By December 8th 2010, the Liberty Swing was installed at the school to provide students with profound disabilities the pleasure of enjoying a swing in a safe and secure setting.
02.01.2022 It’s today.......... come and socially distance with us at the Zonta Reflection seat on Victoria Parade at 11.00.
02.01.2022 As we draw nearer to celebrating 25 years ... read about another activity our Club supports. Birthing Kits Australia, established by a Zonta club in South Australia, was established in 1999 to reduce maternal and infant mortality in third world countries. This exciting and successful Zonta project expanded quickly to become a District 23 project in 2003 and is now Australia-wide. The first kits cost $1.20 each to make and our club made 500 per year.... A kit consists of plastic sheet for a safe birthing surface, soap and gloves, gauze squares, cord ties and sterile scalpel. The Clean Birth Kit is reviewed annually as part of our commitment to better understand the social and environmental impact of the Clean Birth Kit. In recent years our club has been making 1000 kits per year at a cost of $5 per birthing kit. This is one of our favourite activities each year. It is such a worthwhile cause and is a great fellowship opportunity.
