First up, breeding Grassland Earless Dragons for the first time ever at Melbourne Zoo, late last year. This is a BIG deal as Grassland Earless Dragons are critically endangered and have not been seen in the wild in Victoria since 1969!

20.01.2022 Melbourne Zoo Keeper Kids area has some new residents - a precious population of rare, Grassland Earless Dragons! This specially-designed facility means our Zoo members and visitors particularly children - have the chance to fall in love with the fascinating and gorgeous reptiles. These little ones are classified as critically endangered in Victoria and the last confirmed Victorian sighting was 50 years ago. But thankfully, 22 tiny babies have hatched at the Zoo this year, and there are more fertile eggs in the incubator. What a conservation success story, and one you can now see first-hand at the zoo!

18.01.2022 It’s International Snow Leopard Day! An important reminder that Snow Leopards in the wild are vulnerable to extinction. It’s hard to imagine a world where Snow Leopards no longer exist in the wild, it’s a world that we won’t allow! We’re proud to support the Nomadic Guardians Foundation, keeping Snow Leopards safe in the wild with the help of Bankhar Dogs! Plus, we’re pretty in awe of Manju, Sikari and Asha Miska's adorable cubs playing a huge role as ambassadors for their cousins in the wild!
17.01.2022 Happy National Reptile Awareness Day! Today we celebrate all our scaly friends and our beloved Reptile Houses. As you walk through Melbourne Zoo you may remember coming across wild Gippsland Water Dragons? These little guys roam around the Gorilla Rainforest Trail at Melbourne Zoo, and were originally confiscated from the illegal pet trade market back in day. Next time you’re able to visit us, keep an eye out for them and admire them from afar (hint: they like to find a comfy place to sunbake, usually on a big rock!)

09.01.2022 Precious Izumi is back with his family at Melbourne Zoo after being successfully hand-raised by a team of primate keepers and vets. Izumi came into the world last August, an exciting moment for the Zoo's conservation breeding program for the endangered species. After six weeks, Izumi was found on his own at an early and critical stage of his infancy - keepers needed to step in. While hand-raising an animal is always a last resort, keepers are glad he has been able to rejoin the rest of the Black-handed Spider Monkey group and live a long life surrounded with his monkey family.
08.01.2022 When the sun is out, it's time to roll in the leaves! Hutan is a Critically Endangered Sumatran Tiger. It's hard to believe that fewer than 400 Sumatran Tigers are left in the wild. One of the biggest threats to their habitat, and species, is clearing for unsustainable palm oil farming. Palm oil is in many of the items that we buy here in Australia, but you can choose to buy products that use 100% Segregated and sustainable palm oil or no palm oil at all. Find out what small actions you can take to help Critically Endangered Sumatran Tigers: https://bit.ly/3mJdlLC

01.01.2022 Keep those Bogong Moth images coming! If you're not sure about what is or isnt a Bogong Moth, here's some tips: Bogong Moths aren’t very big, usually measuring around 4-5cm long head to wing tip. They have a dark stripe that runs down each wing They have a light-coloured spot at the top of the stripe that is shaped like a circle... They also have a light-coloured spot at the bottom of the stripe which is shaped like a kidney Our team will look at your picture to identify whether it’s a Bogong Moth or not so please still upload any photos of any moths you see to our Moth Tracker! Find out why it’s so important to track Bogong Moths and help change the future for critically endangered Mountain Pygmy-possums: https://bit.ly/2W5S4Rr Thanks to Yohanna from Hotham Heights for uploading this image!
