25.01.2022 one out, one in - Zoe Grigoris . one out - The covid weirdness definitely changed the course of my year but slowing down a little turned out to be just right for me. It gave me time to think about my practice, adjust and make work more thoughtfully. I also moved from the studio I shared with my favourite friend Dani Barrie at JamFactory into a solo space. I've been very lucky to have maintained access to my studio throughout covid and I'm so thrilled I was able to finish mak...ing special jewels for weddings that almost didn't happen. . one in - We first met Zoe when she began the associate program at the JamFactory where she has continued to work and is currently a tenant in one of their private studio spaces. Zoe’s pieces have a delicate aesthetic which she achieves by using hand made punches to create intricate surface patterning, combining this with carefully placed colour. We have a limited number of her pieces currently in stock and are looking forward to showing you more of Zoe’s new work in the future. We’re up to G, and my aim is to introduce you to every maker we represent at Zu design alphabetically. The title one out, one in - symbolising social distancing and our need to limit people in spaces. @adelaidearcade #oneoutoneinatzudesign @gaysarcadebalcony @gaysarcadeadelaide #zudesignmakers @rundlemall @artjewelryforum @zudesignjewellery @zoegrigoris

24.01.2022 one out, one in - Jo Hawley . one out - During this time I've felt very fortunate to live in the country and to be able to work from home. I’m very used to being at home a lot of the time, to being on my own a lot. The view is gorgeous, I can still walk the dog every day and there’s plenty to do around here. I’ve been able to continue to work - more or less as normal - although I’d be lying if I said I was unaffected by it all.... I had thought that I’d be able to get amazingly on top of things last year, lots made, new ideas worked through and resolved, the house cleaned, the garden sorted but ....... some days motivation has been hard to come by and although this way of life is not totally foreign there are lots of things I miss about being in Melbourne every week - especially people. The second lockdown felt harder than the first, I think that’s true for most people in Victoria. I tried to take it as anopportunity to get on top of all those things Ididn’t quite get to during the first one but I can’t say I succeeded. In the end it became more about just keeping going with everything - doing little bits of all the things I thought I’d do so much of - and making the effort to spend some time working every day. Now I’m looking forward to this year, to all the things we missed and to more normal motivation, and I’m wondering what I should be aiming for. Maybe this is the year to work through those new ideas instead. . one in - Jo Hawley is a Melbourne based maker. Her pieces are delicately graphic and often evocative of architectural forms. Bangles that can be layered beautifully for more complexity or enjoyed as simple forms on their own. Neckpieces that play with lineal forms and three dimensional earrings which are striking. Jo’s pod series plays with colour, so many fabulous colours that its hard to choose just one!

24.01.2022 one out, one in - Sahr Bashir one out - These 'Temporality' pins are a way to negotiate with an altered concept of time, existence and the fragility of life in our current uncertain times. Medium: Silver 925... one in - prism earrings in acrylic and sterling silver. Sahr has been contributing to our group exhibitions ever since her move to Adelaide in 2016. Each series of work has been different to the last, from geometric to organic cast and electro-formed pieces, Sahr is continually experimenting with materials and forms. Were looking forward to seeing the next development of her work. Over the next few weeks my aim is to introduce you to every maker we represent at Zu design alphabetically. 22.01.2022 one out, one in - Gretal Ferguson . one out - During the pandemic Ive had a lot of potential opportunities disappear so Ive been obsessed with making stakes from random metal objects and exploring wearable pieces to extend my stitched series. . one in - I first met Gretal when she came to Adelaide to start the associate program in the Metal Studio at the JamFactory. I have such admiration for her vessels and her tool making skills. We hope to be able to show you these at ...Zu design in the future. 22.01.2022 one out, one in - Emma Cuppleditch . one out - Working in isolation was a gift that I didnt know I needed. During this time I was able to gain a better understanding of why I make what I make and formulate exciting plans for the future. I will look upon the last few months with gratitude as I ease back in to daily life as a JamFactory Associate. . one in - Emmas work cant help but put a smile on your face. The pieces we have at Zu design are all about colour and movemen...t, from her playful resin with tinsel earrings to her brooches with patterns drawn on to the metal with colour pencil. 20.01.2022 one out, one in - Sonja Clark . one out - I havent sat at my bench for a while. Not making during the last month or so has seen me spend a good deal of time trying to sort out my creative endeavors. With the same intensity I might add to the long focused hours I usually spend making. I had a good go at building a web site to promote my work which is a project still in the making but almost there. I have also catalogued, cleaned the studio and space for a restart and new ...work. 20.01.2022 one out, one in - Emma Field . one out - I moved to Brisbane at the beginning of the year and was only just starting to get settled when covid struck. Apart from commissions that have been sprinkled throughout the past six months, Ive found it hard to sit down at my bench and hard to be creative. Ive spent a lot of my time figuring out what direction I want to take my practice/business in and developing those things (including new branding and an updated website!). A lot o...f my other time has been spent crafting, painting, bushwalking and enjoying the beautiful sunny weather. Emmas one out images include her - intersect pendants (taken by Newcastle photographer Zoe Lonergan during a fun mini shoot @zoealonergan), some Brisbane nature, a texture experiment, and a shot of some earrings taken during a crafty afternoon. . one in - I first met Emma when she came to Adelaide to start the associate program in the Metal Studio at the JamFactory. 19.01.2022 one out, one in - Jess Ervin . one out - Its been a strange time, while things around me feel the same and my full time job has been going at a steady pace, I have definitely made sure to slow things down, and appreciate all the pieces of this puzzle, called life. Having a couple of mini holidays from work, I decided to do some making in the studio. A few pieces were made from metal and some were made out of fabric. 1. I had a mission to design, make and set a piece myse...lf. A Sterling Silver and Blue topaz ring. 2. Then I had the delight to remake a lost Mr Happy brooch. 3. My Bench views.... its never this clean 4. My Studio also doubles as a beautiful sewing space. 5. Once things started going back to normal and we could go off a travel, in the same state. I made a trip back to see the Family and went on a little fishing adventure with Dad, to Port Hughes. . one in - We first met Jess after she had completed her studies at TafeSA when a group of graduates from the Bachelor of Visual Arts and Applied Design course created new work for Capriccio exhibited at Zu design in 2013. 19.01.2022 one out, one in - Jessica Bojczuk one out - lock down has had me enjoying books I have collected on my travels in the past few years. This piece (not finished) was inspired by revisiting my love of geometric form after seeing an exhibition at the Tate modern in 2018, Shape of light - 100 years of photography and abstract art. one in - Jessica works in a variety of materials from highly polished silver and monel to rubber and silk. 19.01.2022 one out, one in - Elizabeth Fotiadis . one out - During the Covid-19 restrictions Ive relished the slowdown of everyday life, allowing the time to connect with long lost friends, colleagues and interests. Of course, it would better if that happened without the horrendous virus affecting so many, acknowledging the awful outcomes for some families. In focus this winter is caring for the tiny rambling garden. Amazingly, a small way to expand the mind, like taking a deep breath.... Photographing small things always keeps me in documentary and design mode. In the workshop/studio, by contemplating the ultimate power of nature and its stunning minute detail, we can channel inspiration, bringing forth a play with techniques and freedom from perfection. Being responsible to all and kind to yourself whilst re-calibrating our lives has been necessary too... . one in - Elizabeth Fotiadis enjoys playing with the materials she uses which shows in her finished pieces. There is a tactile quality to her metal with the marks from her processes visible on the surface of her work. I love manipulating materials and I cant ever see myself not making. one in - Its been a very quiet time in the city and in the Arcade. While everyone did their best to keep their distance we closed the doors at Zu design but I was here most days and open by appointment. I had beautiful clients visit and buy pieces to support makers, which was so encouraging ...and caring. I also used the time to catch up on paperwork which has inspired this series of posts. 17.01.2022 one out, one in - Lucie Heskett-Brem . one out - I noticed last year, how much this isolation and loneliness can drag one down without really noticing it! This year I take more and better counter measures (like I go for walks with friends and make little outings to visit people occasionally ) . one in - Lucie is known for her very fine chain work in gold and silver. She makes delicate pieces laser joining links to create intricate patterns. They are beautifully tactile, rin...gs evoking henna tattoos and larger web like pieces which are draped around the body like large shawls. You can’t help wanting to play with these pieces. We first met Lucie when she visited Zu design to show us her work while on a trip to Australia. She loved South Australia so much, that she has been staying here most summers ever since, enjoying warmer weather while it is winter in her home town, Lucerne, Switzerland. Covid has meant we haven’t seen Lucie for two summers now. We are thinking of all our friends around the world and looking forward to the next time we will see them again. . We were lucky enough to have a class where we collaborated with his students who were completing their apprenticeship course work at TafeSA - Adelaide College of the Arts. We designed pieces and they had to work out how to create them from our drawings. Angela Giuliani is one of the many makers whose skills have been nurtured by Johns teaching. 15.01.2022 one out, one in - Laurence Coffrant . one out - One of the things I have found most difficult during the lockdown, is being unable to plan for the future and feeling a loss of control. Being in nature has really helped me to combat this feeling. Ive found the process of cuttlefish casting really therapeutic. Being able to carve the cuttlefish and even scavanging for them on the local beaches. Image of cuttlefish casting still in its mould, sterling silver and pink sapphir...es. . one in - I first discovered Laurences work while she was doing her Bachelor of Visual Arts at the University of SA. 14.01.2022 one out, one in - Emily Copp . one out - The time since the repercussions of COVID really hit has felt like years have passed in weeks a time when news was out of date if it was more than a day old. Yet equally, where we are currently, I also feel like everything has gone by in a blur. My time has been very preoccupied with my work as one of the Directors of SquarePeg Studios and also my work at UNSW Art & Design. Everything has gone through such rapid change it has been v...ery occupying to respond and adapt. I have otherwise enjoyed spending more time at home with my partner, walking my dog and at my studio. I joined the Hand Medal project it is a fantastic initiative and it is lovely to feel connected to other makers around the world in working towards thanking healthcare workers through our labour. It is a soothing making as meditation project. Otherwise, I made myself a little garnet ring the other day and have been journaling ideas which I am looking forward to creating. . one in - I first met Emily when we showcased in camels footsteps. Emily was a part of a group that went on a camel trek through the Flinders Rangers and then created work inspired by the things they saw and found on their journey. The colours of the landscape captured her and details in the delicate shapes of the gum trees and a single butterfly wing became the platform for her jewellery forms. 13.01.2022 one out, one in - Joungmee Do . one out - Joungmee has been working in her studio in Melbourne experimenting with new forms and in particular working on some rings made in her trade mark style. We cant wait to show some of these at Zu design. She phoned me from her studio just as more restrictions were placed on Victorians and we are thinking of all our makers who are facing more isolation. . one in - Joungmee uses a traditional Korean metal inlay technique, Iybsa, which cre...ates a beautiful visual texture to her pieces. The surface shimmers with reflections from the very fine chisel marks in the steel that are used to hold gold inlay, or left as a beautiful pure texture. When you hold a piece by Joungmee you need to turn it over, the detail in the embossing on the silver backs which form backgrounds for the blackened steel shapes, are as detailed and impressive as the fronts. 11.01.2022 one out, one in - Catherine Buddle one out - I havent been up to much since I broke my wrist in January. I spent a good deal of time untangling a vintage Japanese thread after the plaster came off, which was good hand therapy. The first skein I attempted to unfurl, about four years ago, and I made a terrible mess. Have been picking away at it, on and off, ever since so its been good to have the time for a concerted effort and finally get it all untangled. It was 1500m long... and took forever. Im contemplating winding off a pale bronze one, but not sure if I have the nerve or dexterity yet. I was finally able to start stitching again, in short bursts, a couple of weeks ago. The photo shows a skein of thread similar to the piece Im currently working on; a reel of exceptionally fine antique French thread Im thinking about using; a red sewing thread for gauge comparison, and the thicker thread I managed to tangle. Second pic is tangled thread! Third pic my sexy new titanium hardware - luckily not my dominant hand. . one in - Catherines love of textiles is evident in her pieces. 10.01.2022 one out, one in - Natalie Gock . one out - I've been taking this time to get outdoors, and am more inspired by what I see in nature every day. It's more therapeutic than ever before as my brain capacity has been taken up by working in a COVID response taskforce for the Australian Government. I'm excited to get back to my jewellery bench and start incorporating what I've seen outdoors into some physical pieces. 09.01.2022 one out, one in - Claire Brooks one out - I have been surprised during lockdown at how much more creative I have been. I seem to be the exception to the rule but the slower pace has really freed me creatively. I have had the time to make things that I really want to make, just because. While the virus has taken a lot of my physical freedom, it has given me back my creative freedom and I am really grateful for that. one in - hundreds... and thousands sterling silver earrings by Claire Brooks at Zu design. 07.01.2022 one out, one in - Jess Dare . one out - This strange time in history, of isolation and social distancing has been such a rollercoaster and we are all still trying to find our way. There have been times when I have questioned my practice and struggled to motivate myself to make at all but then there have been times of focus, determination and a flurry of new work. Ive been developing a new range of earrings for my online store (developing that too), adding to my series Mak...ing Time (currently on tour in Made/Worn by The Australian Design Centre) where my son Banjo collects things in the garden and on walks and I remake them in metal, simplified, symbolic and essential. I have been contributing to the Hand Medal Project (@handmedalproject ), to keep my hands busy, feel a part of something bigger and feel useful on those low days weve all experienced in isolation. Banjo and I have spent a lot of time baking, gardening and crafting together, spending time together doing the things I remember doing when I was a child with my mum. Time has both been irrelevant and consequently as time flies during this period. Slowing down and enjoying family chaos, quite literally watching our veggie patch grow and counting the eggs the chickens lay each day. Then being shocked as the weeks fly by as my body, bulges and changes with my growing baby. Essentially thats what my work is about time, memory, loved ones, the fragility of memory, moments in time and life itself. . one in - Jess Dare is a partner with Catherine Truman and Sue Lorraine of Gray Street Workshop. So many of the pieces that Jess makes evoke memory. On a personal level, her out of season, paper cut petals.... neckpieces take me back to my own childhood, sitting on the veranda with my Grandmother, using these patterns to create our own posies of paper flowers. 06.01.2022 one out, one in - Melanie Ihnen . one out - "For me, the Covid pandemic was a time of reflection and change..Due to lockdown and strict covid guidelines I was unable to use the studio in the Sydney CBD for a few months..During this time I helped my partner keep our other business afloat, and spent some time reflecting on the idea of work life balance. I pondered parenting, running 2 businesses, the direction of my practice, and how to enjoy the journey! This reflection le...d to the decision to close my studio in the city and moved into my new custom built studio space, within the retail warehouse where my partner's business is located. It was the right decision, and I haven’t looked back.. When social distancing rules relaxed a little, I was joined by a beautiful group of creatives and finally photographed my jewellery on the body. After so long with very little human interaction, the day of photography, sunshine, friends and the simple joy of cake and tea was so uplifting. " . one in - Melanie is a Sydney based maker, working from Ihnen Atelier. We have shown her pieces at Zu design since 2004 after she finished her studies in design and jewellery. 05.01.2022 one out, one in - Naomi Bishop one out Through the period of social-distancing, the focus has been the care of my family. It has bought about a really lovely opportunity to spend real quality time together, especially over the weekends. 04.01.2022 one out, one in - Manuela Igreja . one out - "This last year was a year of introspection for me, a chance to slow down and prioritise the important things in life. I have been spending more time outdoors with my family surrounded by nature and feeling even more connected to the Earth. I'm not spending as much time at the studio as I used to, but when I'm there I see myself truly committed to creating something meaningful. My best work happens when I take time by slowing down.... Good pieces take time to make." . one in - Manuela Igreja is a Melbourne based jeweller. After moving to Australia from Portugal, she fell in love with our flora and fauna. 03.01.2022 one out, one in - Kath Inglis . one out - "I called 2020 the 'year of table flipping’ On the 14th of March I was in Melbourne for the opening of my solo exhibition ‘Epiphyte’ at Studio Ingot The Pandemic was just breaking in Australia and I received a breast cancer diagnosis that same week The next week I was back home in Adelaide home schooling two children (very poorly) and getting my head around the idea of treatment. My beautiful studio at the Hahndorf Academy was out ...of bounds - I had to put my tools down, and there was no pathway for me to return to the State Herbarium to continue my investigation of Marine Algae. To fill the making void, I scrambled to purchase my own microscope and work on my own at home. I really enjoyed looking at the specimens I collected as they were fresh, not dried out and flattened like the ones in the State Herbarium collection. Last year I felt so proud to be a jeweller. Not for anything that I made - as I didn’t make much at all. But last year I leaned on the community and the relationships that I have grown over the past 20 years. To be included in such an intelligent, thoughtful, generous, supportive and also kooky community humbles me to my core. Oh and my health is all good now. Please, If you’re over 40 I beg you to book in for a check up today " . one in - I have known Kath Inglis since she began as a student at Uni SA. A valued member in our jewellery community Kath is currently the Studio Head of the jewellery and metal studio at JamFactory. 02.01.2022 one out, one in - Danielle Barrie one out - like many makers, Danielle has been trying to create in her beautiful workshop, but like so many creative people the world that usually informs her work has become exhausting. Feeling weird pressure to keep being creative and productive but being so not able or not in the mood.
