19.01.2022 Mayor Phillemon Mosby talks about the Coming of the Light, and what it means for our region. On the 1st July 1871, the Reverend Samuel MacFarlane of the London Missionary Society (LMS), accompanied by South Sea Islander evangelists and teachers anchored at Kemus beach on Erub (Darnley Island) to convert people of the Torres Strait to Christianity. In defiance of tribal law Dabad, a Warrior Clan Elder on Erub welcomed the London Missionary Society's clergy and teachers.... The Coming of the Light is celebrated by Torres Strait Islanders of all faiths in a festival like no other in Australia, where hymn singing, feasting and Ailan dans strengthen community and family ties. A monument consisting of a tall white cross, a representation of the All Saints Church, the Society's vessel, and scripture (as shown in this video), signifies the arrival of LMS and now stands proudly at Kemus beach.

02.01.2022 On July 1 1871, the first Anglican missionaries from the London Missionary Society arrived in the Torres Strait at Erub (Darnley) Island in a ship called 'The S...urprise'. This year marks 145 years since the first introduction of the Bible to the Torres Straits. Every year we Torres Strait Islander peoples celebrate the "Coming of the Light" on the 1st of July also referred to as Zulai Wan. On this day we Torres Strait Islanders perform re-enactments, prayer, feasting and celebrations. It is an important date to Torres Strait Islander communities, both in the Straits and on the mainland. As Father Wopole says ~ Christianity confirmed the faith the indigenous people already had. (ABC interview, 2001) May you all have a great day on Zulai Wan (July 1) Yumplatok Bible (Electronic form of the Yumplatok Bible) @ http://torresstraitbibles.org.au/Yumplatok/root.htm Photography by: Ashley Carson Photo of Bishop Saibo Mabo at the Coming of the Light festivities in July Photo Source: Aaron Smith More about this story can be viewed @ https://www.themonthly.com.au//thornton-mccami/island-time #God_Bless_and_Protect_Youpla #Zulai_Wan
