25.01.2022 Well said guys, we certainly do learn more with every exposure. It also serves as a reminder that consultation IS THE service. Offering a generic answer or action to a specific scenario is often unhelpful toward empowering parents. So few people realise that it isn't all about the 'fitting'.

24.01.2022 In follow up from the ‘A Current Affair’ piece last night and with input from Kelvin Edwards Baby Car Seat Fitting (Thank you guys) ACRI wishes to highlight a few practical and immediately effective Child Car Safety Seat tips that will help any road traveller, regardless of whether there is a gated buckle or any one of the other dozen seat belt locking devices in use. (NB: The ACRI preference is that a Safety Seat is attached to the vehicle using a Seat Belt locking device, a...s long it is correctly used. However if this is not possible, as these products have been tested without such devices, the below tips at ‘A & B’ will ensure a safe as possible environment. (A) To assure a safe environment for a child and before concerning yourself with attachment of the Safety Seat to the vehicle you must: 1. Check that the product is suitable to the size of the child. 2. Should it be placed Rear Facing - Forward Facing - angled appropriately? (Read the labelling carefully) 3. Are the shoulder straps set to the correct height (as close as possible to the child’s shoulder height) - with no added twists. 4. Is the side / head impact protection device correctly positioned if applicable 5. Are the harness straps adjusted to remove all slack on every trip? (B) A far as the Safety Seat product’s attachment to the vehicle: 1. Is the Seat belt through the correct pathway and connected to the buckle correctly? 2. Has all looseness been removed from the lap section of the seat belt? (Some vehicle seat cushion compression is necessary when doing this) 3. Is the upper tether strap connected to the correct location (Check the vehicle owners manual) 4. Has all slack been removed from the upper tether strap? (As tight as possible - WITHOUT THE SAFETY SEAT BEING LIFTED UP OFF THE VEHICLE SEAT) At this point there is little point pushing and pulling the Safety Seat around unless a seat belt locking device has been utilised. As all this will achieve is to loosen the seat belt and you’d need to start at point (B) 2 above again. Safe Travelling to everyone over the Christmas Season from all ACRI members.

24.01.2022 For those of you who are tired of trying to answer questions about the Child Restraint Evaluation Program report here is a letter that shares some views that many of those at the front line have been concerned about for years. Please feedback your feelings on this. https://www.acri.com.au//Press%20relea/CREP%20COMMENTS.pdf

23.01.2022 If everyone knew what risk management is in respect to passenger safety, then children would benefit as a natural consequence. Many adults do not understand basic injury risk management factors, so how are they expected to teach their children effectively? It's often reported that the public want more information about child restraint safety. That's not our experience on this topic. Generally the public don't put much thought into this at all. The 'more information' request...ed of authorities often means "I want a solution to the problem I have". Many of these 'problems' do not strictly relate to actual safety solutions, we have a hundred different ways to address a child's safety now. They more than likely relate to perception of safety issues. The challenges that many people seek to solve with 'more' information relate to: Economy. Convenience. Stress. Status. To expect to address such concerns as listed below just by 'getting more' general information is obviously ridiculous, these are specific issues that need to be dealt with individually. Reducing the stress of arguing with a child that doesn't want to stay restrained or even dislikes the colour of the restraint they are using. Reducing the time it takes to use a restraint correctly, therefore improving convenience. Conceding peer group pressure to change a child restraint product type or practices. I want a product that will solve the problems my parenting created We have never had so much information out there, it's not the amount and availability that's the problem, it's the content. This factor has been retarding real safety improvements for years and now its reaching epidemic proportions. Every day, people participate in unsafe practices, largely because they're not aware that their actions bring potential risks to themselves and more importantly to others which include their children. Let's get the right messages across! Theres a long way to go, but as a start see the ACRI 'Safe travel principles' http://www.acri.com.au/FAQ.aspx#safe%20travel%20princ See more

21.01.2022 Sorry this is long, but we'd like to think that its worth reading. Every now and again someone will do a media piece on child restraints. On one hand this is a good thing as it raises the profile that more can be done with transit safety. On the other hand the information imparted should at least be accurate and hopefully helpful to all who view or read the article. Recently, there was another TV report aired, (see link above) sourced from Sydney and was, in respect to being helpful to all parents, a miserable disappointment. 21.01.2022 Child Passenger Safety from a Distance: SURVEY As a recent ACRI Facebook post stated, improved risk management is only effective if we understand what the risks actually are and it's clear to many of us, that many using our roads do not. How can we positively influence our children in protecting themselves if we arent sure what protects us as adults?... This survey is one of casual observations collected over a nominated time span of as little as 1 day. Issues to be noted are as simple as No or poor upper body restraint Inappropriate front seat use Mobile phone use Make your contribution in helping us collect useful data on how wide spread basic misunderstandings are happening everyday. Please submit to this survey and pass this link on. http://acriaudits.com/survey/index.php?sid=76867&lang=en

20.01.2022 It's all happening in Sydney! Setting up for the Pregnancy, Babies & Children Expo on the agenda for this weekend, starting tomorrow at 10am.

20.01.2022 This concerns Automotive dealers and repairers predominantly and is a request for opinions from those involved in the legal profession and automotive service industries: Please consider this scenario and hopefully you can offer some input. A client arrives with their three (3) year old child to leave their vehicle for service. They've organised one of the businesses loan vehicles, but refuses to remove their childs child restraint from their car for use in that vehicle. The...y drive away from the business in the loan vehicle with their child illegally and inappropriately restrained. What are your thoughts on this scenario? Who is legally responsible? Could this issue be brought back to your business? Do you see this as the driver's (parent's) problem? Have you experienced this yourself and have policy or procedure for it? Wed like some feedback on this situation, as your suggestions may help other service providers deal with this or similar issues. Thank you.

18.01.2022 Thank you to Tara and Danni for your excellent help on the ACRI stand today, we certainly needed it! We hope you found your attendance beneficial too.

15.01.2022 For everyone who has responded to us about the CREP letter please share it with your networks. It's not an easy workplace for those dealing with concerned and overwhelmed parents/consumers. We're constantly needing to put out fires of misinformation. Any individual or organisation that states that the public wants more information on child safety seats, clearly has no idea of how much information is already out there. If they do, then they are showing that they've no knowledge of what 'quality information' is. Please share the letter link below with retailers, consumer groups etc. https://www.acri.com.au//Press%20relea/CREP%20COMMENTS.pdf

14.01.2022 As many child restraint service advocates have, ACRI has tried over many years to provide solutions to child restraint management in the child care and family services workplace environments. Endlessly, reinventing, training, auditing systems and other offerings in an attempt to help the industry with simple, low cost and successful safety decisions for their workplaces. Quite frankly, were regularly worn down by it all, as well as appalled at the apathy that exists across...Continue reading

12.01.2022 Come on down to the ACRI stand at the Adelaide Pregnancy and Babies Expo! Next info sessions are at 12:30, 2:00 & 3:00!

12.01.2022 The term 'fitting' service is a misnomer. As 80% plus of a quality service should include consultancy over issues such as on the attached image.

11.01.2022 Its not what people think Hi all, weve been pretty busy, partly it seems because we spend more time un-training people than training them on what passenger safety actually is. Whether for a parent, an automotive workshop or a child care organisation, it takes a long time to explain that it isnt who fitted the safety seat that matters most; its equally the consultations, before and afterwards that matter. Ie: Its a consultancy service not a do for service. Its also... frightening to us of how many stakeholders think that their own personal use experience prepares them appropriately to deal with a clients child and related safety concerns. People are always telling us what safety seat training should be, who will benefit most from attending and how showing us how to fit a seat will suffice. In general terms they have no idea what our programs entail and how powerful they can be in empowering, future-proofing workplaces and parents, today and into the future. Our hope is that one day all stakeholders will realise that workplaces cannot manage any child safety seat risk if they cant recognise what the risk is first. This is easy in most cases, but not if youre focusing on the XYZ when its the ABC that matters. 'Lets all Travel Safely' See more

11.01.2022 Last night Channel nine’s A Current Affair did a piece on Child safety seats. Whatever safety messages could have been highlighted, the public were exposed to what amounted to one issue only. That being, how tight their seat should be. It focused almost entirely on gated buckles making ‘all the difference’. There would be plenty of service providers who would agree that within context a Gated Buckle can make a world of difference with maintaining reasonable attachment, BUT t...here was little mention of the other misuse aspects NRMA quoted as being 2/3 of all seats in use. The NRMA did not mention the lack of requirement of such a firm attachment is in effect a result of the Standards testing regime. It’s been many years that the NRMA has had a representative on the Standards committee. This, along with their contribution to the CREP initiative has not brought around any change to this factor. Why, especially if this single factor is as important as was repeated in the piece? Yes, the segment put the spot light on child transit safety at a particularly high risk time of the year. But it did little else other than put the NRMA brand out there. Although the tech involved has little say in what the TV crew actually put to air we can only hope that he’s as disappointed with the end result as we are. It was generally a waste of air time and completely misleading to grossly un-informed parents. When are so called authorities on this subject actually going to impart effective and sustainable child safety messages that every parent would benefit from? ACRI

10.01.2022 Car Restraint Safety Theres a lot of talk in our community about child car seat safety, whats right, whats wrong, what is appropriate and what isnt. Subsequently theres a quite a bit of confusion concerning this topic, with sources of information ranging from authoritative resources, commercial interests, enthusiastic private individuals, all keenly contributing to the discussion. Even over a short time, many parents and expectant parents can be exposed to a great deal o...Continue reading

04.01.2022 In our industry, we don't get to many times to smile, but here's one we hope.

03.01.2022 Sorry, another long one: Training others about child restraints. The challenges: Advanced driving courses dont start at teaching you how to steer a safer line around a corner or how to control a slide on a slippery surface, both physical skills. They start with raising the awareness of what youre actually participating in, the dynamics and the consequences of your actions. ACRI is very proud to say that we have had that approach to training people exposed to child restraint...Continue reading

03.01.2022 Child Transit Safety? Its not rocket science, but decision making and seat use activities can get very confusing very quickly. ACRI - Tip #1: When choosing which product to buy, always compare functionalities. How easy is it to use every day. One example is that the harness system needs to be adjusted for every trip, so it needs to be easy to use. Is the adjuster release practical and accessible? Consider this in the vehicle as well - not just on the shop shelf. ACRI - Tip #...2: Although comfort and fabric choice may be a nice consideration for your baby, cushions and such do not generally contribute to safety. In fact too much interference from comfort devices often affects the correct use of a safety seat. Both ease of operation and a successful safe usage can be seriously affected. 02.01.2022 Thank you to all of the visitors who spoke with us on the ACRI stand at the Sydney PBC Expo today. One of the messages we were sharing with parents was that follow up monitoring of their childs safety seat is always necessary regardless of who installed it. Thought wed include this link to help with that. https://www.acri.com.au//Acri%/Icon%20images/Checklist.jpg
