13.01.2022 GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE WEEK WEBINAR: CAN UNIVERSITIES BE LEADERS OF CLIMATE CHANGE ACTION? LIVE TODAY! 11AM AEST | 12PM AEDT | 2PM NZDT... Universities are hubs for research-led knowledge production and teaching in relation to climate change. As large organisations, they may also have significant emissions profiles which contribute to our current crisis of anthropogenic climate change. Universities can also lead by action through their sustainability and emissions mitigations efforts. The University of Tasmania is one of only two universities in Australia that is certified carbon neutral, and, as this year's organiser of Global Climate Change Week the university is calling for action from other universities in Australia and globally to take up the challenge as leaders in climate change action. Can your university make significant sustainability or climate change mitigation pledge during Global Climate Change Week? As hosts of GCCW 2020-2024, the University of Tasmania would like to highlight and celebrate your university's efforts and build a coalition of strong university-initiated leadership on climate action. We'd like you to join us to build ambition by bringing concrete mitigation actions to GCCW year-on-year, making universities not just thought leaders but leaders of climate change action. 06.01.2022 Did you know today is World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought? This day is observed every year to promote awareness of international efforts to combat desertification. The day is a unique moment to remind everyone that land degradation neutrality is achievable through problem-solving, strong community involvement and co-operation at all levels. Even more specially these times, considering the COVID-19 situation. Actions based on the clear understanding of rights, rewa...rds and responsibilities of land management can help address the COVID-19 fallout by tackling one of the primary environmental drivers of emerging infectious disease outbreaks. At the same time, strengthening the resilience of our food and water systems, can help reduce the effects of the pandemic on global poverty and food insecurity. Today, the motto healthy land = healthy people promoted by the Convention to Combat Desertification, is more true than ever... to build a better future for ourselves, we must invest in the future of land. #BuildBackBetter #FoodFeedFibre #DesertificationAndDroughtDay
