22.01.2022 Hi my name is Sharon Yuan and I’m a fourth-year social work student about to finish my placement with Advance Diversity Services (ADS)! During my time here at ADS, I have learnt so much about culture, diversity and the extraordinary work ADS does with CALD communities. As a soon to be social work graduate, I am passionate about social justice, inclusivity and working with women and children. Through this placement, I have been blessed with so many different opportunities to d...evelop my skills and build my network. At ADS, I have been working closely with the Settlement team under the Specialised and Intensive Services (SIS) and the Settlement Engagement and Transition Support (SETS). Through the SIS program, I have learnt about the barriers and challenges refugees face from their journey to their settlement in Australia. Coming into placement during Covid, has brought on many unprecedented challenges in the way we work with people and communities. I have been providing support to our Community Officers in the SETS program to co-facilitate online Zoom sessions with their community reference groups and provide any technical assistance. Because of Covid, I have had to quickly learn and adapt to reimagining different ways of communicating and engaging with communities. I have also been leading the Emergency Relief (ER) Program and have witnessed the direct impacts of Covid on families and how this has led to increased complexity and need of support for those affected. I have felt so welcomed by the ADS team since day one and have had such great experiences being a part of this team that I will be staying on as a volunteer after my placement ends. On the first day of the session, 12 children attended the class a great way for them to maintain their fitness, continue to develop skills and increase social participation.
