21.01.2022 DAKAR 2021 - Prologue In Dakar terms the prologue is often overlooked, a short blast, considered inconsequential to the overall event however, many takes it ext...remely seriously as an indicator to rally’s outcome. The 2021 edition of Dakar saw the prologue take on an 11 kilometre competitive stage around the Saudi city of Jeddah after a 181km liaison leg. The results perhaps no surprise at the front with Honda’s Ricky Brabec finishing six seconds ahead of teammate Joan Barreda. The American keen to follow up on his victory last year. What did surprise was the leading KTM. Australian Daniel Sanders placing third just 13 seconds behind the lead. Sanders has limited navigational skills and so outright skill came to the fore on the prologue, it’ll be interesting to see how he performs over the next fortnight. Fellow Australian and two-time Dakar champion, Toby Price managed ninth place, 22 seconds off the pace and leads the full factory KTM riders. Michael Burgess, an Australian riding for the BAS dakar KTM racing team managed a very respectable 39th place with a time one and a quarter minutes behind Brabec. While Andrew Houlihan, also Australian and riding for the Nomadas Adventure team was a minute and a half further behind in 72nd place. The Dakar proper starts tomorrow with a 277km competitive stage plus 345km of liaison. The course will be entirely on track and should see a fast pace for those at the front.
