24.01.2022 Incredible! They are still discovering well preserved remains in Pompeii. And there is more to come with over 20 hectares to excavate in the area.

24.01.2022 "I enjoyed every part of the tour and felt at home where ever I was. Killarney and Galway were great for street entertainment, pubs and live music. I loved the remoteness of the Aran Islands, it is hard to imagine how they lived way back then. I also loved the amazing stone structures and the great age of all the buildings. It was fascinating to see all the stone walls everywhere in the open spaces." 24.01.2022 Announcing Harry R. , with a dizzy choice of several Alpine counties to guess, uncannily not only picked Germany, not only picked gorgeous Oberammergau, but actually picked the field we were in! Genuinly. Can you believe that? We were on the Kofel mountain walk and stopped to cool our feet, which he also guessed! What he got wrong was we walked 100 metres to paddle in a crisp, cool mountain stream! So he was 100 metres wrong! Well done Harry. The Cross perched on top of Kofe...l peak is a famous Oberammergau landmark. The views up there are like a chocolate box picture This whole Bavarian region around Oberammergau, Garmisch, Kloster Ettal, and the Palaces is utterly magnificent, both in Summer and over Christmas. We have a Christmas Market tour that stays 3 nights here https://www.albatrosstours.com.au/german-and-austrian-chris We have a stunning new Christmas tour that starts in the high Swiss Alps then stays 5 nights here over Christmas. https://www.albatrosstours.com.au/swiss-alps-and-christmas- In 2022 we also gave our popular Oberammergau Passion Play programme https://www.albatrosstours.com.au/oberammergau-passion-play And of course our Black Forest and Bavarian Alps tour that spends 3 nights nearby visiting Ludwigs’ fairytale palaces as well as 4 nights near Salzburg. https://www.albatrosstours.com.au/black-forest-bavaria-tyro Well done Harry See more

23.01.2022 For decades Sicily has been seen as inferior to Italy’s more glamorous regions such as Tuscany and Piedmont. 22.01.2022 Must See: Giants Causeway, Northern Ireland Supposedly built by an Irish giant called Finn McCool, this unique geological feature consists of 40,000 hexagonal, basalt columns cutting through the broad beaches, forming an intriguing, patterned promontory stretching out to sea. 22.01.2022 My most memorable moment on my Albatross tour... For me the entire trip was and will always be memorable, however one thing that does stand out, despite not being part of our tour (just a perfect coincidence), was The Viehscheid aka when the cows come home. This is an annual event in Schwangau where the locals dress the cows in decorative bells and head dresses and themselves in traditional clothing to bring the cows down from the mountain tops for the winter. 22.01.2022 How much are the French obsessed with cheese? - The typical Frenchman (or woman) will eat a whopping 25.9 kilos of cheese each year. - In France, approx. 57 kilos of cheese is produced each second!... - There are rules about how you can cut cheese in France. There is a right way and a wrong way, and it all depends on the shape. - The French dont eat cheese with the other courses or as an appetizer (although some meals or salads may of course include cheese in them). Instead, the cheese plate comes at the end. - If youre really serious about your cheese, you can get a cheese degree in France. 22.01.2022 "When it comes to the Christmas markets in Munich, Innsbruck, Bolzano and Ljubljana, they were festive and full of delicious foods, drinks and Christmas trees decked out with vibrant ornaments. 22.01.2022 Have you ever tasted a Francesinha? Francesinha is a speciality dish of Porto, in Portugal and is believed to have been inspired by France's croque-monsieur. Francesinha recipes vary slightly, but they always start with several types of meat piled between two thick slices of white bread. The most common are ham, minute steak and sausages like linguiça. The sandwich is grilled in a press, then fully covered in cheese slices and a tomato and beer sauce. A fried egg is often ad...ded on top, and chips are almost always served on the side. For the uninitiated, the Francesinha might seem heavy. But in Portugal, it's often eaten as an afternoon snack. 20.01.2022 "The most memorable moment for me was the Ice Breaker. What a treat. Being on deck watching the icy sheets below crack and slowly drift apart as our ship ploughs on through to our icy watering hole. This is just the tip of the iceberg though! Below deck, you don a flotation suit and head out on the ice for a dip in the frozen, black Baltic sea. It's exhilarating, exciting, and a little bit scary all at the same time....and you look a bit like a big red Teletubbie!... Afterwards, and dressed again in your own clothes, you can walk on the ice alongside the Ice Breaker ship. It’s incredible. You're actually walking on the sea! We were lucky to be on the ice as the sun was setting. It doesn't get better than that." Lynsey travelled on the 'Northern Lights, Ice Hotels and Huskies' tour in February 2020. 18.01.2022 Message from the 'Mo' - 'Magnifico' won the title I wanted to call this tour Paradors, Pousadas and Palaces because of the stunning selection of ‘antique’ hotels we stay in, but ‘Magnifico’ won the title. When designing it, it just struck me that we had a fantastic opportunity to create a dramatically different tour staying in some of the most extraordinary ‘timepiece’ hotels in Europe. We could quite easily have gone for modern, steel, concrete and glass first class hotels ...and kept the price down but that would be so boring, so dull, so ordinary and would not have been even remotely sensitive to these gorgeous, evocative destinations. Spain and Portugal - home and heart to two empires that stretched across the globe spanning centuries of conquistadores, galleons, castles and monasteries, port and sherry, Fado and Flamenco, the strum of the Spanish guitar, the click of heels and the clack of castanets. We had to do it justice. Where we stay adds so much depth and flavour. Distinctly Spanish and Portuguese. The name ‘Magnifico’ won because the longer, 2 and 3 night stays in our selection of hotels set the scene wonderfully for our unique activities and inclusions such as Portuguese pastries and coffee in Lisbon’s Belem district and chartering our own lunchtime cruise boat to sail on the Alto Douro. It is the complete touring experience which makes it absolutely ‘Magnifico’. 15.01.2022 Must Stay: Su Gologone, Sardinia In the east of Sardinia are the wild hills of the Supramonte Mountains, where shepherds commonly live past 100 years. This part of the island is rich in traditions and history and is home to Su Gologone, one of the most memorable hotels you will ever stay in. Su Gologone (pronounced Sue-golo-gornay) all started with the food! In 1967, newlyweds Peppeddu and Pasqua Palimodde opened the Oliena regions first ever restaurant. The simple food co...oked each day was such a success that people started visiting from far and wide. Accommodation in the area was scarce, so they opened a small hotel. The word spread that here was a very different Sardinia to be discovered. Their daughter Giovanna later transformed the hotel into a world-renowned destination, with exotic terraces and beautifully decorated hidden corners. Whitewashed villas and terraced rooms scattered up a hillside of olive trees, oleander blooms, hydrangeas, and prickly pears, colourful dcor with local crafts and artwork, stylish terraces and lounges. Interiors feature the works of local and national Sardinian artists, and the furnishings, crafts and dcor are created in Su Gologones own Botteghe dArte. The staff are all locals and so proud of their hotel, and all the food and wine originate from the surrounding local Oliena region. Dinner is always special and on one evening on your three-night stay with Albatross Tours, after a pre-dinner drink on the Champagnoteque (champagne terrace) enjoy the Sardinian specialty of roasted Porceddu Suckling Pig! (Dont worry, vegetarians are well catered for!). 12.01.2022 Must see: The hilltop town of Civita di Bagnoregio, Italy A thousand years ago, an absolutely picture-perfect, walled citadel was built on a rocky pinnacle in the middle of the Badlands. The land around eroded and subsided and eventually access was only possible by a skinny unstable ridge. Bridges were built, and then collapsed. Now there is a strong, 300 metre long stone and steel viaduct connecting this striking medieval, hilltop town within the rim of the huge crater. Pr...obably the most striking hilltop town in all Europe. Inside are picture-perfect stone buildings, squares, flower boxes, cafs and magnificent views. 11.01.2022 My favourite moment on my Albatross tour... The Shepherds picnic experience was for sure a highlight for me. We were deep in the Supramonte Mountains, in old bandit country where as late as the 1960s bandits were still operating here. Its rustic and a little uneven under foot down a small slope to the hut where the magic begins. We are on an outdoor terrace, sheltered with long wooden bench style table and chairs. A stunning view greets us, overlooking the limestone mounta...ins and gorges below. There is an actual shepherds hut here that is still used throughout the year. Incredible to think that this is still used as a home. Conical in shape, made of what looks to be pine trees/branches, inside is very dark, of course no lights, with evidence of fires from a previous tenant. Lunch was exceptional. My favourite was Pane carasau - traditional Sardinian flatbread, paper thin - think giant poppadoms! We used this as a kind of plate, loaded with the freshest of the fresh local ricotta cheese, drizzled with local honey. All finished off with a glass of Cannonau (Sardinian red wine)! Bellissimo... 11.01.2022 Shenanigans on tour.... "On our first night in Lucca the group walked to a local restaurant for a beautiful meal and wine. The evening was fine when we started, but a very heavy thunderstorm happened during our meal. No one had taken an umbrella. One of the travellers in our group noticed the tablecloths had a plastic feel and she suggested we could use them as a rain cover. The owner gave us one each and we ran through the cobbled streets, looking like "the flying nun", it... was so funny, especially when a few got lost on the way back. One poor couple did a full loop and ended up back at the restaurant. Our biggest regret is that it was raining so hard, no one took a photo!" 10.01.2022 Hi everyone the ‘Mo’ here.. still seems like some of you all guess ‘where is the Mo’far too quickly! Thanks to Harry and Jackie So the next photo or video is going to be sooo much harder I hope... But in the meantime some background information. The blue headscarf I showed you first was a lovely gift my guy called Dario, sales manager for Jungfrau railways. he always gets a giggle seeing me wearing his Swiss mountain headband in the heat of Australia and the bike rides. The next one, yes you guessed it, was Edelweiss. The mountain flower throughout the Alps. Yes traditionally coming from Salzburg in Austria, did you know that the actual song Edelweiss in the Sound of Music film, was written specifically for the film? The irony is that after the film the Austrians scorned that song and the movie because they said it was ‘Hollywood’. Now of course they accept it as it symbolises so much of what they love about their country. The last one is more of a bandanna. Very revolutionary. What you see is the head of the Moor, which is actually the symbol which makes up the Corsican flag. Sometimes the bandanna is over the moors forehead and sometimes over his eyes. No one is really sure why there is such a difference. Corsica has one Morrish head, Sardinia has four. I actually bought that bandanna in a small town called Sartene. Cute little ancient town we stopped at en route to Napoleans town of Ajaccio . So Jackie, whilst I didn’t buy it in Corte, your guess was on the ball, because Corte is absolutely the heart of the Corsican revolutionary spirit. and isn’t Corte such a beautiful fascinating mediaeval town set in the wild and most incredible landscape. well done both Jackie and Harry. 09.01.2022 Carole travelled on three Albatross festive tours in December last year! What did she love about her Albatross experience? "First class meals, first class wine and great company! I loved that we didn’t have to worry about tipping, the pace was excellent, and I didn’t feel rushed. I was worried that because I was on three tours that I would see the same places and do the same activities over and over again, but each tour was different and I saw a different aspect of a town or ...village, even if I had been there previously. When one tour ended, I found myself looking forward to the next one. I loved the mix of having organised days and ‘My Time’ as well." 08.01.2022 Must see... Newgrange Tombs, Ireland Older than Stonehenge and the Egyptian Pyramids, Newgrange Tomb was built around 3200 B.C. by Stone Age farmers. Of the many notable features at Newgrange, the most famous is the small opening or roof box situated above the passage entrance. At dawn on the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year (December 21st) and for a number of days before and after, a shaft of sunlight enters the chamber through an opening in the roof box.... To the Neolithic culture of the Boyne Valley, the winter solstice marked the start of the New Year- a sign of natures rebirth and promising renewed life to crops, animals and humans. It may also have served as a powerful symbol of the inevitable victory of life over death, perhaps promising new life to the spirits of the dead. 08.01.2022 What was your favourite place on your Albatross tour? "You know, there were so many! We LOVED Vienna, and in particular our day spent exploring the city and ending with a tour of beautiful Schönbrunn Palace was fabulous. The three day stays in one place with day trips made the tour most enjoyable. We found the tour not hurried in the mornings, and all inclusive for the tour highlights. You can do the tour and excursions without paying any extra. John Burt, La Grande France... Read more about Johns experience - http://ow.ly/J9LC50BaesH #albatrosstours #traveltomorrow #france

03.01.2022 "We had watched the BBC show Sicily Unpacked and knew all about The Wild Boar and his restaurant. We walked a hundred metres there as the bus could only get so close and it was just as I remember seeing it right on the beach. And, yes, Mr Vittorio himself was cooking in the kitchen while drinking a glass of wine. His food was as delicious as promised and he was so proud walking around sitting, talking and drinking with all his patrons. He even stopped for a photo with us...." 01.01.2022 A special update from Euan Landsborough, The Mo, Managing Director of Albatross Tours.

01.01.2022 Hi everyonenow try and guess where I was when I took this photo!! A little tougher this time I think ..

01.01.2022 Message from the Mo: ‘Under Italy’s Skin’ I was originally going to name our 'Italian Alternativo' tour ‘Sotto la Pelle’, which is Italian for ‘Under the Skin’. Instead I decided to call it the ‘Alternativo,’ because we really are showing the other side of Italy. A wonderful side, and one so far virtually ignored by mass tourism and bustling crowds. How is that so? Looking at a map of Italy you will see the Italian Apennines runs down the centre of the land like the ridged sp...ine of an animal. But in the middle section, the Le Marche region, it actually looms really close to the Adriatic coast. Sometimes it’s barely 10 kilometres from the sea to the rocky summits. Because of that geography there is just one major highway heading straight up the east coast. And, because there is little that is noteworthy on that highway, tourists thunder by desperately trying to reach their next ‘high profile’ destination. They have no time, patience or knowledge that there is a gorgeous, richly historical, beautiful world just up and over the hills. I have made absolutely sure we discover and explore this beautiful world. Let me give you just one example - the UNESCO Heritage listed city of Urbino. Urbino is home to the master artist Raphael and Donato Bramante who designed St Peter’s Basilica in Rome. It is also home to one of the most powerful men in early Renaissance times Duke Federico da Montefeltro. His wealth and influence spread right across Europe, and he built a monumental Ducal Palace to exhibit that power. The man not only had military might and tactical skill, he was also a patron of the arts and sciences - something you clearly see when you stroll through his hometown! It is quite extraordinary that this whole region is so readily missed. Actually I am so pleased with that, because otherwise there would be nothing ‘alternative’ about this tour. But I can assure you there is! Learn more - http://ow.ly/bqZk50Cc4bE #albatrosstours #traveltomorrow #italy

01.01.2022 Must see: Mostar, Bosnia-Herzegovina Ravaged and smashed in the Balkans War, Mostar has now been lovingly rebuilt and the locals are intensely proud of their Stari Most (Old Bridge) a curious humped back pedestrian bridge spanning the River Neretva a reconstruction of the original 16th century Ottoman bridge. A place where adherents of Islam, Orthodoxy, Catholicism and Judaism have coexisted for centuries, this cultural melting pot makes a fascinating visit. Mosques and ...churches stand side by side with charming riverside terraced cafs and the occasional, bomb damaged, bullet pock-marked ruin.
