22.01.2022 Alberto's Pizzeria at 589 King St Newtown has been a local favourite since it opened its doors in 1989. Lots might have changed since the late 80s, but the inner west's best pizza isn't one of them. Eighty year old owner Alberto has been working in the pizza business since 1979, when he opened his first shop in Percival St in Stanmore, before moving to the current site on King St. But there is a lot more to the octagenarian than just pizza. Once upon a time Alberto studied mu...sic in Sydney, playing the accordion in the live music venues of Sydney's past. Alberto remembers the shopping high street mecca of King St as once a "ghost town" compared to the modern day. Alberto goes by the old adage, 'what you see is what you get!', he is a Calabrian by birth, travelling to Australia by ship after the second world war in the exodus of southern Europeans to Australian shores. After arriving in Australia, Alberto's search for employment took him to the Tablelands of Far North Queensland in Mareeba as well as Wollongong south, before deciding to settle in Sydney. Alberto found a job on the Snowy Mountains Project in 1956 before coming to Sydney and entering the restaurant business. Alberto is a permanent fixture at the pizzeria and can be seen rolling out dough and preparing meals most nights of the week. He is about to relelase a new menu which has a focus on traditional Italian pizza whilst also incorporating some more exotic varieties.
