25.01.2022 Surviving Covid 19 With no tour groups, weddings or B&B guests and with no-one visiting the shop as a result of the Covid 19 travel restrictions, things are even more quiet than usual here at Anlaby. We have a plan though, and that is to spend the quiet time doing maintenance on the house, outbuildings and garden so that when we get through this, we will ready to welcome back visitors.... With dozens of windows, seemingly miles of guttering and endless facias to be painted, the painting task seems enormous but it will be worth it. We are also doing some exciting things in the garden. Stay tuned. We hope that you are keeping safe and well and we look forward to seeing you soon.

25.01.2022 The Camellia House: work begins Day one. Tristan Kerr from Kerrstructions in Kapunda and his newly appointed off-sider Cory appear with a truckload of timber and 20 litres of paint. Days one and two come and go. The stack of unpainted timber diminishes while the corresponding stack of painted wood grows. Another 10 litres of paint needed.... Sheepdog Jessie proudly sports one ear in very fetching Portland Stone. She likes to help!

23.01.2022 Frosty morning The garden was covered in frost this morning. When the frost lifts, we can get back to getting the garden ready for this year’s Open Garden weekend. We have had to reschedule it to 10th and 11th October. We will need an approved Covid and social distancing plan as required by the SA government but unless things in SA go pear-shaped, we are looking forward to our best Open Garden weekend yet.... Save the dates and we look forward to seeing you in October. See more

22.01.2022 Caper berries It is caper berry time at Anlaby. The caper is a Mediterranean plant that loves the long hot summers here in South Australia. In autumn, the flowers set berries and it is these berries that we pickle. They taste absolutely foul when picked. A week in a water bath (changing the water every couple of days) takes the astringency out of the berries. They are then ready for pickling and will be ready for eating in about a month.... They are a fantastic snack, not unlike olives. The advantage with caper berries is that they come with their own stick. No mess no fuss. Yum! See more

20.01.2022 The Camellia House is finished and what a difference it makes. Now it will just age gracefully into the garden as the timbers slowly turn grey. Thanks to Tristan and Jesse from Kerrstructions and thanks to all those people who came to the 2019 Anlaby Open Garden. We could not have done it without you. Hope to meet you again at this year’s Open Garden on 17 and 18 October (restrictions permitting).

18.01.2022 Another big thank you this morning to one of our sponsors Team Poly - their tanks will be on display when you arrive at the gates over the weekend. Remember if you pre purchased tickets please print them or take a screenshot to show our wonderful staff at the gate https://www.trybooking.com/events/landing?eid=659098&

17.01.2022 From all of us at Anlaby, Jess included, we wish everyone a safe and joyful festive season.

15.01.2022 Bringing the Camellia House back to life Thanks to the support of all those people who attended the Anlaby Open Garden in October 2019, we were able to raise funds to help us bring the Camellia House back to life. This is really exciting for us as there was a time a few years ago when the old stone foundations had almost reached the point of no-return. At that time, we had the walls repaired but thought that rebuilding the structure would a project for someone else in the fut...ure. Here is a "before" photo. Stay tuned to see the building grow over the next few weeks.

15.01.2022 Open Garden is in full swing - still plenty of time to come and visit us! Tickets via https://www.trybooking.com/events/landing?eid=659098&

13.01.2022 Painting in the kitchen Painting continues. This time it is the kitchen that is getting a make-over. It is a big job so this time we have called in a professional. The colour is original. We found a patch of paint behind an old cupboard and Lyell matched the colour.

11.01.2022 Day three and much excitement! The walls are going up. Once the wall frames are complete, the rafters and then the timber slats that will provide the shade will go up last. We will use slats on the walls as well as the roof. We will leave the hardwood slats untreated so that they will weather over time.

07.01.2022 The frame is now complete and the timber slats are going on. The timber details mirror the existing shade house although the distance between the slats is slightly larger in the Camellia House to let a bit more light in. This is the view from the veggie garden looking east

06.01.2022 Good morning Anlaby friends... Today is going to be yet again a hot day with mild winds, making another day that will fuel these dreadful fires & potentially start new ones. It was 2 weeks ago today that Marc, Rhiann & Estelle of Aristaeus Farms (a part of our Anlaby family) lost their home, businesses & everything they own in the Cudlee Creek fires. ... Please scroll back to a past post to read the ABC story on the family, there was also an article in last weekends Sunday Mail. We realise that so many have been brutally effected by the fires, nation wide & that many need help but Aristaeus Farms are linked to us so we are doing what we can to help them directly. www.aristaeusfarms.com is where you can learn about who they are & what they do to help others suffering from PTSD as part of their wonderful ‘giving back’ attitude. There is a clean up/working bee happening tomorrow at the farm. If anyone can spare even just an hour of their time to drop by to lend a hand it would be greatly appreciated. Up first is fencing, the animals are currently roaming free as their isn’t any paddock fences left etc. I haven’t been on site as yet but I’m certain there will be so much to do. If you aren’t able to spend any time helping out but would like to help these amazing people rebuild their lives, businesses & what they do for others you can donate by clicking on the link below. We hope to see you tomorrow & a huge thanks to those whom have generously donated towards the cause. Tenille https://www.gofundme.com/f/aristaeus-farms

01.01.2022 It is lambing season. One important issue at this time of year is shelter. We have a number of paddocks for the lambing ewes that are sheltered by trees to give the new born lambs and their mums maximum comfort. The other important issue is feed. The initial rains this year, while down on what we would like, came at the right time and there has been a good amount of pasture for the girls leading into lambing. The season inevitably means that we end up as surrogate mum to a few lambs. This period can last for about eight weeks and for the first couple of weeks, they need to be bottle fed with special formula four times a day. We have set up the nursery in one of the stables. Andrew and Jess have their work cut out!
