25.01.2022 Pocket rocket Scout - this little girl has had some big scary changes in her short life lately. Her first 18 months of life were very sheltered and she had limited socialisation opportunities, so the world can be a bit intimidating for her. After spending a few months with her wonderful foster family, she is now starting to learn how to be a house dog and is ready to find a forever home that will continue to build her confidence. 24.01.2022 Dog rescue can be a bit of a rollercoaster. Sometimes, the whole adoption process is really quick but sometimes, it seems like it is taking forever. Sometimes, things just click and it feels as if the new dog has been a part of the family forever, other times, it takes a while for everyone to find their new equilibrium and sometimes, things just do not work out.... Sometimes, despite all the checks, meets, trials and long conversations about what else we could try to make things work; despite everyone putting in their best effort and much to everyone's disappointment, it is just not meant to be... ...and it leaves us all wondering "was there something else we could have done to make it work, something else to try, maybe the dog just needed more time, more training, more patience?" The new research carried out by Mikayla Disanayake might be able to shed some light on why things don't always work out in families that bring in a new dog after loosing their previous companion (also known as Second Dog Syndrome). If you have gone or are going through a similar experience and would like to participate, head to the shared post and contact Mikayla directly.

24.01.2022 Bear 8 year old Male Husky x Samoyed Bear may technically be a senior, but dont tell him that! This big polar bear still plays like a puppy - he loves to chase a ball, have a good game of tug and of course, do zoomies ... He has all the crazy husky qualities that you would expect (easily distracted, lots of energy, does his own thing) and the lush coat and vocal abilities of a Sammy! To learn more about Bear, go to https://www.arcticrescue.org.au/adopt/meet-the-dogs/bear Bear is currently in a shelter environment and would dearly love to be in a loving home. He has a medical condition that does not affect him or require anything other than monitoring, which ARV will cover the cost of for his life. Adoption Fee $450 M/C #956000010522726 Source #EE100304

24.01.2022 We have received hundreds of applications and enquires since the start of the pandemic and are diligently working our way through them. Please be patient with us! Our adoption and foster process is very involved anyway, and we are having to be very creative in how we safely conduct yard checks, meet and greets and handovers, plus offer ongoing support. As we are not a shelter, our dogs are situated all over Victoria, so logistically its a much harder time as well. Please c...onsider a few things before applying for one of our dogs Have you carefully read their FULL profile on our website and can meet their requirements? What will your normal life be like after lockdown is over? Can you still commit to the physical and mental needs of the dog when you're not home all the time? When we say a dog has specific needs, like being an only dog, or not suitable with children, cats, livestock, requires secure, 6ft, dig proof fencing or needs an experienced owner - we dont put that stuff in there for shits and giggles. Those stipulations are there for a reason and are not negotiable, no matter how nicely you ask us. If we dont have the perfect dog for you now, or you miss out on the dog you originally applied for, dont stress. If you're a great app, we keep you on file and contact you when we do get a dog that may be a great match for you - many of our dogs have never graced our adoption page as we had a home already waiting for them! Lastly - consider an oldie! Bear, Lochy and Tanook have had maybe 5% of the hundreds of applications we have received and poor Shakira hasnt had a single one. Check them out! https://www.arcticrescue.org.au/adopt/meet-the-dogs Until then, please stay safe, patient and fluffy

23.01.2022 UPDATE - NALA IS IN FOSTER CARE URGENT FOSTER OR ADOPTION Nala ... 3 yo female Husky Nala needs a hero, and she needs a hero now! She has very limited time to find a suitable home to help her. This poor girl has been starved and was emaciated. She has passed around to a number of homes that were not right for her. 18.01.2022 We hope everyone is having a lovely Sunday morning! Get yourself a cuppa and watch our next edition of the ARV dog-life in lockdown videos with training tips! Mental stimulation will tire your dog out much quicker than physical exercise and is a perfect addition to your lockdown routine. You can train almost anything, anywhere! ... A few additional tips: * make sure you use food reward as a reward, not a bribe! So, when teaching a new behaviour or trick, phase them out quite quickly * consider using your dog's daily food rations instead of treats to make sure you don't overfeed * shaping and training little tricks is a fun way of teaching your dog how to learn and deal with a little frustration * Brushing up on basic obedience and working on some extra manners that we usually don't get time for like not barging through doors or not jumping up can establish better boundaries and great habits * crate training is invaluable in teaching your pups about down- and alone-time! For more information of some basic training and our recommended dog trainers around Melbourne head to our website: https://www.arcticrescue.org.au/about/resources/training Thanks for watching! 18.01.2022 * Update - for more information please have a read here https://www.arcticrescue.org.au//breed-in/health-wellbeing Whilst we're all simmering and cooking in this heat, the subject of shaving our furry fluff butts was brought up ! It's a common misconception that shaving will help cool the dog, I mean, look at all that fur! Why wouldn't you just shave it off to cool the dog down! Unless it's for veterinary surgery purposes there would never be any good reason to shave a fluff butt. Brushing your dogs is one of the best ways to help cool them in a heat wave like this. It helps to remove the undercoat because as we all know they're all shedding it by the bucket loads! Slicker brushes are the way to go. Please do not ever use a furminator. Enjoy the pictures, it's pretty self explanatory

11.01.2022 They like to think they're smart - scaling fences and having selective hearing! But sunbathing is not smart! Not this week anyway. Here are some tips: 1. Bring your dogs inside the house and shut they door if they keep going out. 2. Supervised bathroom visits and back inside the house 3. Ice blocks in the water bowl. ... 4. Pool party allowed in the shade. 5. Walk them around sunrise and sunset when the footpaths and tarmac have cooled a bit. 6. Brushing your dog will help too by removing undercoat (use a good slicker brush). If your dog only has an outside kennel please be aware that can turn into a hot box and cause them heat stress. If you have any other useful ideas to share with us comment below. *photo below was taken in Oct.

02.01.2022 First one of the #lifeinlockdown videos focuses on toys. The most important take aways are: - match the toys to your dog's size, (chew and pull) strength and play style to avoid excessive wear - unless your toys are specifically designed for hardcore players (and tested by you), make sure to always supervise your dog's playtime to avoid any accidental swallowing of foreign objects... - almost anything can be turned into a toy (just make sure you approve of the dog's choices first ) - regularly changing your dog's toys around and making them available one at a time will keep them fun and interesting - treat-dispensing toys like kongs or buster cubes make feeding time more exciting, rewarding; they teach your dog to focus and problem-solve, which tires them out quicker! Happy playing! Clarinna and Frederik are the miracle foster heroes that have seen our post and applied at the right time and had the right experience and home environment to suit Nala's needs. We are so happy to report that Nala's physical and mental health has been improving greatly! Narelle from Natural Health and Nutri...tion put together a nutritional plan to get Nala to her ideal weight safely and improve her overall health. The great quality high-protein puppy food donated by SavourLife now forms the perfect base to support her continued recovery! Huge thanks and a lick of approval from Nala If you would like to help Nala on her journey to recovery, you can become a sponsor by donating through our online portal here: https://www.arcticrescue.org.au/donate/once
