25.01.2022 Enjoy wine? Are you a keen cyclist or bushwalker? Why not come up for a drive to Lenswood. Turn off at Harris Rd and you will come to Mt Lofty Wines, drive on to Pike and Joyce (they overlook the Kennels) and finish at Andersons on Croft Rd - three wineries, three road names but really one stretch of road. Opposite Andersons you will get access to Mt Crawford Forest a favourite place for mountain bikers and bush walkers. Dogs are not allowed in the Forest but we will provide doggy day care whilst you sample the wines or hike through the forest. (To avoid disappointment please book in advance - cost $20 per 4 hours or part thereof.)

22.01.2022 Marleys Bushfire Relief Fundraiser! Hi to all my fellow pets. Friday was pretty scary. John and Susan bundled all of us into their vehicles and took us to somewhere safe - no smoke, no fire! BUT When we were all settled in we discovered that one of their neighbours was not so lucky. Steven Boyle is a local farmer - he suffered burns to fifty percent of his body and looks like it will be some months before he can get back to work. Meanwhile he has a wife and three kids bu...t as the sole breadwinner they will be doing it tough. So here is a call out to all you pets - I have convinced my owners to kick in $50 to start off a fund raiser. Convince your owners to also make a donation - they can either use the EFT details that John and Susan have given to your owners (make sure it is marked Steven Boyle!) Or send your cheques direct to : Steven Boyle Bushfire Fund c/- PO Lenswood 5240. Make sure that you post on here your name and breed and the amount you donated. Come on fellow Airedales - you know we are outnumbered by the Labradors and Retrievers but this is our challenge! See more

21.01.2022 Last summers Sampson Flat bushfire and the subsequent fire at a boarding kennel gave us some pause for thought. Our bushfire plan is based on the stay and defend principle; we are confident that in the event of a fire the kennels are the safest spot on our property. Whilst we can take the risk of staying can we make that decision on your behalf? We have decided that we need to be prepared to evacuate. As the bushfire season coincides with our busiest period that becomes a... logistical nightmare. But one of the positives to come out of the Sampson Flat Fire is that it will be possible to evacuate all our borders quickly and safely. The Animal Welfare League did a splendid job in rescuing many animals during the fire. We have negotiated an arrangement with the AWL where in the event of a fire they will evacuate all of our boarders to one of their sites. We will stay with them to ensure that there is continuity of care. To make this happen we need to modify our administration we currently do not have the facility to send out a bulk email to all of our customers if we need to contact them in the event of an emergency. Whilst we have all your contact details it takes time to contact 30 or more families and in the event of an emergency time is a luxury that we do not have. So we have created a new email account: [email protected] this email address will be used exclusively for making bookings and communicating to you about any issues with your pets. We ask you to use this email address in future. We have also given the AWL an undertaking that we would encourage all of our customers to make an annual donation of at least $10. You will appreciate that a bushfire places an extra strain on the AWLs resources and so any contribution that we can make to assist them in their work will be much appreciated. We know that some of you already make donations to the AWL and some of you have already made a donation of $10 If you decide to make a donation then please use EFT reference AWL BSB085 458, A/c 55 278 8756 A/c name Arkaba Kennels. And advise us that you have made a donation in your reply to us. Our aim is to raise at least $2,000 for the AWL. Of course even if you do not use our kennels but you can still make a donation to the AWL; those of us living in the Hills are only too well aware of the magnificent job they did in rescuing all sorts of animals from the fire.

17.01.2022 Your pets well being is important to us at Arkaba Kennels. All dogs need to have current c5. Equally it is important that we know what your pet normally eats. The Arkaba diet is cooked chicken mince, light and mature biscuits with in season vegetables. But we know that some dogs do not respond well to a change in diet. For that reason we do need to know what you feed your dog. Call us on 8389 8348 if you would like to discuss your dogs diet, medication etc.

17.01.2022 For many of our boarders the surrounding country side is filled with wonder. We now have a small mob of kangaroos that have made our paddocks home. Most dogs have never seen a roo, or for that matter a koala so they get quite excited when they see them. Then in the mornings on their early morning walks they can very often sniff out the overnight carnage that the foxes have inflicted as well as the fresh droppings from possums, koalas and the roos. I guess for most it makes a welcome change from sniffing the hydrocarbons that dominate the urban environment.

17.01.2022 For those of you delivering dogs be mindful of the poultry at the top of the driveway. Currently you will see about ten ducklings, a white duck limping along (thanks to a fox) and a number of chooks having dust baths on the side of the track. So take it easy coming down and make sure your dog is secured inside your vehicle - some can get rather excited when they see all these animals. (I suppose for them it must be like driving through a safari park!)

17.01.2022 Spring has sprung. At last count there were 10 magpie nesting around the property - as well as that a couple of ducks have returned to nest in one of the gums near the dam. Much to the consternation of many of our borders there are a couple of weird looking large hopping creatures in the paddock. At least there is plenty for them to sniff.

14.01.2022 Trouble with kennels is that you can really never get away. We do not employ staff, it is just the two of us but there comes a time when you need to recharge the batteries. Generally it is enough that every Sunday we try and get away for about four hours - just four hours for ourselves is usually enough. But this year we have bitten the bullet and will take 10 days away. On September 9 we shut to be open again on the 21st - ready for the school holidays. We do intend to take our holidays a bit more frequently once every 5 years is not quite enough...

14.01.2022 Cat owners please note. The spring storm last year destroyed our cattery. Fortunately no cats were injured or lost BUT it has meant that we will no longer be able to accommodate cats. Should this change then we will post here advising you that the cattery is yet again open for business but for the present we are sorry to say that we can no longer accommodate cats.

13.01.2022 Some of you will be aware that we have had a few problems with our website. It has now been revamped so that it is smart phone friendly and can be used to make bookings. If you have any difficulties with the website or notice any gremlins please let us know by emailing us: [email protected] - also a reminder that we are beginning to fill up for Easter and the term 1 school holidays. Over the next month we hope to get our driveway repaired - the summer storms have not been kind!

12.01.2022 Easter - owners go away and dogs get to holiday with us. You can tell they enjoy the opportunity to hang out with all sorts of other dogs. Going for a walk on our property must be heaven whereas we enjoy the spectacular views they enjoy a smorgasbord of scents. Firstly there are the smells the other dogs have left behind - they stop and analyze and now exactly which dog it is, how old it is and what it has had for dinner. Then there are the sundry smells that is part and ...parcel of living here - unfamiliar smells of echidnas, roo, koala and fox. Then there the more familiar smells rabbits, cats, possums. Often we find the mute testimony of a night time struggle: a few feathers bearing witness to a bird that is no more. we wll be busy this Easter all the big kennels are taken but there are still some vacancies for small dogs. Ring us on 83898348 if you are still in need for somewhere for your little one to go. See more

11.01.2022 Welcome to the year of the Dog! When you have a chance share on these pages stories, photos, videos about how dogs have made your life better. We see here it all the time - those faithful companions might be content enough whilst they are here; and indeed some get truly excited when they come down the drive. But in the final analysis is the love and companionship with their owner that they crave the most.

09.01.2022 Healthy dogs! People are constantly on the look out for alternative treatments for their pets. One of our customers was faced with a hefty bill for a knee reconstruction for his dog. When he worked at the zoo he had successfully used acupuncture for some Koalas so he tried it for Bella - no expensive surgery, no weeks with Bella walking around with a bucket in her head. Instead a course of several treatments with acupuncture seems to have done the trick. Well worth conside...ring if you have a pet that needs it : http://www.equinoxbalance.com.au https://www.facebook.com/EquinoxBalance/ Although both her website and facebook are focussed on horses - she does dogs as well. Other owners have told me about using a chiropractor for their dogs and horses - again worth trawling the net to look at a range of remedies. See more

08.01.2022 Bushfire season - regular customers will be aware that our bushfire plan is to stay and defend. However, if there is time we will evacuate and we can count on the Animal Welfare League for assistance. We ask all of our customers to consider making a donation to the AWL - they really do a marvellous job especially during natural disasters in caring for animals.

07.01.2022 It seems to be getting earlier each year: last year we were fully booked for Christmas and the New year by October. This year, not even August and only 10 places left!

07.01.2022 Telstra problems Since the bushfires we have been having problems with our phone. It seems that our landline has not been working. So if you need to get in touch text John's mobile: 0419 841 040 - we will then get back to you.

07.01.2022 Marley's Bushfire Relief Fundraiser! Hi to all my fellow pets. Friday was pretty scary. 06.01.2022 Those of you who have visited the kennels you will know what sort of landscape surrounds the kennels - for those of you who havent have a look at the latest tourism sa ad - it features our next door neighbour Pike and Joyce and if you know what you are looking for you can see part of the walk that your pooches will take on a daily basis should they board with us! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UitQ4IJGa3c

05.01.2022 Although it is only October I am afraid that we are fully booked for the Christmas period. (December 18 to January 4) There are still some vacancies outside of these dates.

01.01.2022 Dear All By now you will be aware of the bushfires in our neighbourhood. We managed to evacuate all the dogs on Friday to the Hanhdorf Animal Shelter and spent the day waiting to see what happened. Came back on Saturday - brought the dogs back and waited for the power to be turned back on. However, it is looking that this may take some time (weeks even) Ther substation that serves us is in the middle of the fireground and that fire ground is still far from safe. We were ver...y lucky - the edge of the fire came within about 500 meters of our boundary but many of our friends and neighbours were not - one was diagnosed with cancer, his employers business was destroyed and his house was burnt down; the sort trifecta no-one wants. So if you hold a booking please text John on 0419841040. and either confirm or cancel. We would strongly advise to cancel (we will give a full refund) for the situation is still unpredictable - a change of wind could send the fire on to our property. We cannot be too upset - we have managed to keep all the boarders safe (we certainly did not want a repeat of what happened during the Sampson Flat bushfire when some fifty or so dogs died in the boarding kennel) Whilst we have been inconvenienced that is minor compared to my neighbours at least five have lost everything. If you text us on 0419841040 we will try and respond quickly. Meanwhile can I urge all of you to make a donation to the local bushfire appeal? I do not know when I can get back to check Facebook but wish all of you a happy and safe 2020 - and of course many thanks to all who have already sent messages of support. See more

01.01.2022 Can anyone help? We are assisting one of our customers to rehome their dog Koda. He is 8 years old. Sable coloured Alaskan Malamute... Needs walks and decent size yard. Hes not a jumper but can dig the occasional hole. Great for a person that likes walks or with older kids (wouldnt recommend an alaskan malamute to a young family). We have had Koda here for several visits and he is a lovely dog - his current owners have three very young children and whilst he is gentle with them the kids are scared of this big dog that can knock them over.
